I don't think interest is dropping for Eurovision, but viewer habits have changed and are changing fast. People may use different play services and even YouTube. Personally, I think the LIVE feature of the broadcast is essential, but that's not necessary universial. People may even just pick the parts they're interest in and watch them when they have time.

I indeed think the same

If you look at YouTube, there is 1,8 million people who watched the livestream of the semi-final there.
Knowing that a Semi-Final gets an average of 20 mil viewers, that's roughly 10% just on YouTube

Except EBU isn't really financing Eurovision, the host country does. Only a small part, say 5-10% depending on host comes from EBU. These figures aren't public (don't know if they are actually secret either) and I got them from ESC Malmö 2013. I'm not sure, but I think EBU is a private foundation and as such there's no obligation to present costs and financing. The Eurovision site is managed by the host broadcaster I think, right? Still EBU is clearly involved in advertisment and development of the concept.

Anyway agree reagarding SVT. There seem to be a mangement nowadays not treating Melodifestivalen and Eurovision as they should.

Well, I wasn't really talking about financing, I was talking about promoting. I mean all countries' broadcasters are paying their shares to EBU, surely they should have some responsibility to, if not solely promote this, at least help out to promote this.

Yeah, and as for Sweden I think it's one of the main reasons that interest and viewing numbers are dropping, the fact that SVT isn't doing what they ones did.

The semis are always low here. They're on BBC4, a channel no one watches so for them 480,000 is probably very good. I always say move them to BBC2 though, if they were there they would be higher still. I don't think interest is dropping it's just most people only care about the final. When the final comes around then viewing figures here will be around 6 or 7 million and peak a little higher.

ITALY

SF 1 - Rai4 - 404.000 viewers, 1,61% share

A slight drop compared to last year's 1,9% in SF1. Well justified considered a bigger competition (Big Brother, political shows etc...).

Plus, I know many who switched to the Sammarinese commentary/live streaming - the Italian SFs' commentators were a bit too tongue-in-cheek for the likings of some...

As expected, the ratings on Thursday were lower.

:se:

Semi with Sweden: 2018: 1.485.000 (2017: 1.337.000, 2016: 1.391.000, 2015: 2.132.000, 2014: 1.736.000, 2013: 1.539.000, 2012: 1.958.000, 2011: 1.573.000, 2010: 1.850.000, 2009: 2.171.000, 2008: 1.972.000)

Semi without Sweden: 2018: 821.000 (2017: 887.000, 2016: 1.462.000, 2015: 1.399.000, 2014: 1.122.000, 2013: 1.250.000, 2012: 1.294.000, 2011: 858.000, 2010: 1.060.000, 2009: 1.168.000, 2008: 1.021.000)

If you compare it with Melodifestivalen, it's clear (once again) that MF is a much bigger deal in Sweden than ESC:

MF'18 - SF1: 3.303.000 , SF2: 2.916.000 , SF3: 2.830.000 , SF4: 2.858.000 , SC: 2.579.000

^ as a Swede and as an ESC fan primarily, and MF fan secondarily, I can't say that these numbers are very satisfying. Eventhough it seems that this year's Semi with Sweden had more viewers than last year's, the trend is still negative. I would really hope SVT could do more to promote ESC and not only focus on MF, although MF is where the big money is. But even in the years we hosted lately (2013 + 2016), the viewership is not as good as one could hope for the semifinals at least. When we have numbers on the final of ESC 2018 I'll add more to this.

I think that for the final, Eurovision 2018 viewring figures will be more lower than last year, considering that now :ro:, :ru: are out from the final + ::na lost ther brodocasting rights.

So, EBU will unlock their brodocast in TY for :us:, :ca: and Latin American countries? This could compensate a bit the loss of Russian and Chinesse audience for their $$$.

You know that :us: is already broadcasting ESC for a couple of editions now? Well, only the finals so far, but still.

But EBU still to unlook them their ESC TY videos + brodocast for the semifinals and finals, but EBU don't do that because Viacom & US copyright laws. If EBU reach a deal with them, then the tv audience could up to 300%

Ok, well I didn't know it was locked, still though most people watch this on TV and not on YT, however for countries like US and Australia that aren't in the time zone, I guess watching it on YT when you have time would be more comfortable, but on the other hand would it count to the viewing figure statistics that are based on viewers of the live shows? xshrug

POLAND
2SF - TVP1 - 2.290.000
1SF - TVP1 - 960.000

It was on TVP Polonia as well, I don't know the numbers but this is not a main channel, so they were probably not so high.

:uk:
First Semi Final (BBC Four): 500,000 (most watched was Emmerdale (ITV): 5,300,000)
Second Semi Final (BBC Four): 550,000 (most watched was Emmerdale (ITV): 5,500,000)

2017 ratings were:
First Semi Final (BBC Four): 500,000
Second Semi Final (BBC Four): 350,000

BBC will be very pleased with SF2, up 200,000 on last year and an increase on SF1. Unusual that the Semi featuring Ireland had the lower ratings.

Really good rating in France. The France Television CEO has already announced that we will continue with Destination Eurovision and that we will come back to Eurovision Junior this year.
