Latvia kicks off our series of interviews for the Eurovision 2019 season, and the first act we spoke to was Alekss Silvers, who will be presenting “Fireworks” in this year’s Supernova selection. We spoke to the multi-faceted singer about his exploits in Belarus and how he was born singing!

Hello Alekss!

First of all, thank you for your time talking to us. How are you? Can you introduce yourself? What can you tell us about yourself?

Hello, ESC United! Thank you for your attention to the Latvian national selection Supernova and to “Fireworks”! I’m good and absolutely thrilled about the first semifinal which is also mine, so that why we are in a work process every day! Vocal, choreography, costumes and everything now is all about “Fireworks”!

I’m a singer, songwriter and TV and radio host living and working in Latvia. This year I represented my country at the International TV Music contest for 21 countries “Slaviansky Bazaar” in Belarus and qualified to the finals (somehow Latvia didn’t qualify to the finals for 5 years in a row, and I’m happy that 2018 was lucky for me and my country and we made it to the finals).

I was a soloist in Riga’s First Music Hall and performed more than 200 shows for a whole year, and also I’m working as a TV and radio host in Riga. And now I’m working on my first album and it’s gonna be #Fireworks!

The song that you will be presenting for Supernova is “Fireworks”. What can you tell us about the song?

It’s a powerful song, a song with a true message and idea. If we are talking about the song message then we all know that great feeling to be in relationship with someone who you really love. You’ve got that emotion like “Fireworks”. And we all (probably) know what it is like if someone who you really love dumps you and you stay alone with that pain inside. The main idea is get back to reality and try to live and find those “Fireworks” again, no matter what. We all are living for love and love brings us the power to smile, shine and enjoy this life. So try to find your own “Fireworks” and live every day as it could be the last one.

What was the inspiration for the song, and did you write it specifically for Supernova and Eurovision?

I didn’t write it all. The songwriter is the talented Aminata who represented Latvia at Eurovision 2015. We have discussed about this song for a long time. Emotions, message, words and feelings… that’s all in the song. But yes, this song was written specifically for Supernova. There was some issues in my life month ago and Aminata knew it (we were talking about it) and I asked her to write lyrics about it and give me chance to sing about something that is in my heart. I have never before been this true with the audience.

What is your impression of the Eurovision Song Contest in general? Do you watch it every year? What is your favorite entry?

This is the contest of all contests. The best stage, best sound and show. I watched it from the age of 12 and never skip it. And as a singer – that is my dream to represent my country and be there. My favorite entries of all time are Loreen – “Euphoria” and Aminata – “Love Injected”.

Do you think performing at the Eurovision Song Contest will have a positive impact on your career?

Everyone who is representing their own country at the Eurovision Song Contest will have a positive impact on your career. That is great opportunity to share your music to the whole of Europe and show yourself. The main thing is to have really good material and attitude.

What is the best bit of advice you have ever been given?

Try to sing from the bottom of your heart and be true.

What’s the one thing that might surprise people about you?

No surprises. Just, let’s get in to the music together and make the “Fireworks”!

Can you tell us about your first experience with music?

School time and singing to one of the Latvian popular songs, and after 16 years I was singing it on “Slavinsky Bazaar” – that was insane. But if honestly – my mom told that when I was born I was kinda singing and not crying at all. And she understood that a singer was born – so probably that was my first live performance, when I was 1 day old!

Thank you for your time Alekss. We wish you the best of luck for the upcoming competition. Maybe we see you in May in Tel Aviv!
