The first of three Latvia interviews we’ll be posting today (you lucky people!) is from Aivo Oskis, a singer-songwriter who has been on numerous talent shows but is now hoping to make it to the biggest one of all. We spoke to Aivo about the inspiration behind his song and his taste in movies!
Hello Aivo! First of all thank you for your time talking to us. How are you? Can you introduce yourself? What can you tell us about yourself?
I’m doing great thanks! I’m from a small town in Latvia called Auce. I lived there until I was 16, then I moved to Riga for my studies. After finishing high school I moved to London to study advertising. I lived in London for a few years, but now I’m back in Latvia and ready to take on my next challenge, which is Supernova 2019! I have previously participated in the Latvian and Lithuanian versions of the X Factor, but this is my first time doing Supernova. I love the experience so far! It’s also an amazing opportunity to socialize with talented artists.
The song that you will be presenting for Supernova is “Somebody’s Got My Lover”. What can you tell us about the song?
On this song I collaborated with my friend Rassell. He wrote the music for it and I did the lyrics. We have worked on various songs together in the past. It’s very easy to work with him, because he enjoys similar genres of music and isn’t afraid to experiment with different sounds.
What was the inspiration for the song, and did you write it specifically for Supernova and Eurovision?
The inspiration for this song is a girl from my high school. We dated, moved to different countries, made promises to meet up after uni and it never happened. I’m bitter so I wrote the song about it… hahaha! Just kidding! I’m very happy for her – she got married recently and is happy, so I’m happy for her. The song was written specially for Supernova.
What is your impression of the Eurovision Song Contest in general? Do you watch it every year? What is your favourite entry?
I think the Eurovision Song Contest is fantastic, because it’s a platform where we get to see lots of creative artists and their music. I think it’s a great place to share music with millions of people. I watch it almost every year and I love it, because it’s always very entertaining! One of my all time favourites is Loreen, however I also like many songs that didn’t win. For example: Mikolas Josef’s “Lie To Me” was very cool and modern!
Do you think performing at the Eurovision Song Contest will have a positive impact on your career?
A positive impact for sure! I think it’s a great opportunity! I think it’s more about how hard you work after participating in this contest.
What is the best bit of advice you have ever been given?
There are many great pieces of advice. Probably, one of the favourites is the simple one; “Be yourself”!
What’s the one thing that might surprise people about you?
I’m a sci-fi/fantasy movie nerd! I love superhero movies and everything about magic, witches and wizards! My all time favourite TV series is Charmed!
Can you tell us about your first experience with music?
I found myself interested in music back in the first grade, when my music teacher told me that I should join the choir. So I did, and I’m glad because now I couldn’t imagine my life without music.
Thanks for your time. We wish you the best of luck for the upcoming competition. Maybe we see you in May in Tel Aviv!
Aivo Oskis will compete with “Somebody’s Got My Lover” in the first semi-final of Supernova, Latvia’s selection for Eurovision 2019. #YOU can catch Aivo’s performance tonight (26th January) as he hopes to qualify for the Supernova final.
