The popular Italian music festival – Sanremo has started its 65th edition last night in Sanremo, Italy. As usual the event is held in infamous Teatro Ariston. Hosts of this edition are Costa Conti, popular Italian television presenter, as the main male host; with Emma Marrone, winner of Sanremo 2012; Arisa, winner of Sanremo 2014; and Rocío Muñoz Morales, Spanish actress, tv host and model as co-hosts.

On the first night we have seen 10 acts perform 10 new songs in the Campioni (“Big Artists”) category. The order of performances was following:

1 Chiara “Straordinario”
2 Gianluca Grignani “Sogni infranti”
3 Alex Britti “Un attimo importante”
4 Malika Ayane “Adesso e qui (nostalgico presente)”
5 Dear Jack “Il mondo esplode”
6 Lara Fabian “Voce”
7 Nek “Fatti avanti amore”
8 Grazia Di Michele & Mauto Coruzzi “Io sono una finestra”
9 Annalisa “Una finestra tra le stelle”
10 Nesli “Buona fortuna amore”

The show featured many guest appearances by the likes of Tiziano Ferro, Imagine Dragons and we have witnessed the comeback of legendary duo Albano Carrisi & Romina Power which performed three of their popular songs: “Cara terra mia”, “Ci sarà” and “Felicità”.

At the end of the night the host announced the Top 6 & the Bottom 4 acts. The Bottom 4 is facing the risk of being eliminated before the final. The Bottom 4 was comprised of: Gianluca Grignani, Alex Britti, Lara Fabian and Grazia Di Michele & Mauto Coruzzi. Unfortunately two of these acts will leave the competition and two will advance to the final. Today we will hear the remaining 10 songs in “Big Artists” category.

The winner of Campioni category has the right to represent Italy in Eurovision Song Contest 2015 in Vienna, Austria.

Italy has had a total of 40 appearances in Eurovision Song Contest. They were one of the founding countries that participated in first edition in 1956. Italy has won the contest twice in 1964 (Gigliola Cinquetti – Non ho l’età) and in 1990 (Toto Cutugno – Insieme: 1992). They made their grand comback in 2011 after being absent from the contest for almost 12 years, when Raphael Gualazzi placed second with Madness of Love.
