Today UMK reveals the seven artists looking to go one step further than Kaarija and take home the Eurovision crown in Malmo. After days and weeks of teasing, we now know the artists vying for the Finnish crown in Tampere on the 10th of February.
Here are the artists!
Cyan Kicks – Dancing with Demons
Previously coming second in UMK in 2022, they are coming off of a tour of Europe and the UK alongside Swedish band Smash into Pieces. They describe their music as a “metal heart in a pop wrapper”. Their song for UMK 2024 deals with harnessing ones inner demons and turning them into a strength.
Sexmane – Mania
Aka Max Sene is currently one of Finland’s most-listened to artists. His most recent album saw 18 of 20 songs smashing into the Finnish Top 50 charts. His UMK entry has been written across time and moods which can be seen within the song itself.
Sara Siipola – Paskana
With a soulful voice, Sara has been the voice on many successful Finnish films. With her business degree in hand she has released many singles and an album, writing songs on “big topics” as she says herself. Her song ‘Paskana (I’m a f***ing wreck)’ is about a friend who loses their father and the feelings that loss then creates.
Jess Markin – Glow
Winning Newcomer of the Year and his album winning Critics Choice at the 2019 Finnish Grammys, Jesse sings about his personal life amongst others with his music being used in the Moominvalley series. He entered the competition citing that his entry just felt right, he says it combines genres and styles that are important to him.
Windows95man – No Rules
An embodiment of the 90s, these artists started on YouTube before being known all over the world. They have played as an opening act for Kaarija at the Helsinki Ice Hall and the city’s New Years celebration in 2022. At UMK, they will be releasing their first single with Henri Piispanen as the singer. No Rules embodies their motto and is to spread a joyous message.
Sini Sabotage – Kuori Mua
Sini rose to fame with her hit in 2013, rising up the Finnish charts to number 1, she is a trailblazer for Finnish rap. UMK is a new book for Sini, she says in her own words Kuori Mua, Peel Me in English, has been inspired by taking a few fireball shots and a collaborative brainstorming session. It is a song full of layers, showing that we all have many sides and so much to give.
Mikael Gabriel x nublu – Vox Populi
A Finnish and Estonian rap duo are among the most successful in their home countries. And they’re both very experienced having released their debut albums in 2010 and 2015 respectively. Their song talks about how it is hard to know what is true, dealing with political and cultural divides. They say that everyone should use their voice but you must remember you will be judged no matter what..
How excited are you now for UMK. The songs will now be released over the next days at midnight local time. It is shaping up to be a fantastic competition and its going to be tough to choose a winner.
