With the race for Rotterdam hotting up in Lithuania’s Eurovision selection, Pabandom iš naujo, we wanted to get to know some of the artists fighting to reach the final on February 6th.

Ahead of this weekend’s semi-final, we spoke to the band Be U about their new-found energy from the competition, their dream festival and how Lithuanians are secretly Eurovision fans!

Hi Be U! First of all, thank you for taking the time to speak to us. Can you introduce yourselves to us? What should everyone know about Be U?

Be U is a band consisting of Guoda Gailiūtė (vocals), Saimonas Stasytis (guitar), Dovydas Mažonas (bass), Dovydas Stoškus (drums) and Martynas Stoškus (keys).

We are happy to play music together, to create it and to perform. Real emotions are our engine.

How did Be U come together? What were your experiences in music before the band?

Well, everything started from our childhood. We all are from a very small town in Lithuania – Šilutė. The guys played country music in the youth band from the age of 11 years. All of them can play more instruments, not only the one they are playing in the band now. Practically all members of the group have musical education. Guoda (vocals) joined us in Vilnius where we went to study after school. Guoda started singing in her early childhood. She has attended a few musical TV shows before we all came into the one band.

This is your first time in Pabandom iš naujo! What have you already learned from participating in the competition?

Yes, this is our first Pabandom iš naujo. And to tell the truth – we are the winners for ourselves already. But that is nothing related to Eurovision. Decision and preparation for this contest gathered us to the real band. We are creating more confidently, enjoying music more openly, trusting each other and professionals who are working with us. We have a kind of energetic impulse not to stop after the contest ends. Already setting plans to present new song for the public. And that is amazing.

What is the message behind your entry “Love Yourself”?

We all are in the same situation, not only in Lithuania. We have isolated ourselves from the things we’ve loved to do before pandemic, we are sitting at home and experiencing not only good emotions. Some people are living through this all alone. Seeking for love is one of the essential desires for every human. Which is even harder in these times. But if you try to love yourself – everything will be easier. When you love yourself – you are open for someone’s love also. Let’s start from ourselves first!

What is your general impression of Eurovision? Do you have any favourite entries from the contest?

We are fans of Eurovision. Somehow all Lithuanians are fans, even those who say that they are not watching it, we are sure, they are doing that secretly 😀 There are some really good songs attending. But due to the intense preparation for Pabandom iš naujo we haven’t heard all the attendees yet. The Roop from Lithuania has a good song and strong performance, they should go to Rotterdam. We’ll be glad if we have the possibility to play in the final concert of Pabandom iš naujo and share the stage with them 🙂 Fingers crossed.

If you could play at any venue or festival in the world, where would it be?

Glastonbury is our dream.

What is your favourite thing about Lithuania that the rest of the world should know about?

Our nature. You should come to see our dunes in Nida, the huge forests, the pure lakes. And meet friendly people of course.

One last question – what would be the first thing you did if you won Eurovision in Rotterdam?

OMG. Trust us – we like to party hard 🙂

Thank you for your time Be U. We wish you the best of luck in Pabandom iš naujo!

Be U will take part in this weekend’s semi-final of  Pabandom iš naujo! with the song “Love Yourself”, hoping to represent Lithuania in this year’s Eurovision Song Contest in Rotterdam.
