# 1 : Shania Twain - That Don't Impress Me Much

UK chart : 3-3-3-4-4-6-9-8-9-10-13-17-20-22-24-32-31-33-34 (19 weeks)

Let's milk the successful album a little more. In six years period (1993-1999) Shania Twain got signature 10th number one with my favourite her song and worldwide hit "That Don't Impress Me Much". With five number ones "Come On Over" already is the all-time record holder and possibly it's not the end.

I don't have any info about her sales in UK, but based on very long chart run and healthy singles market in 1999 the impressive numbers are very possible.

Ten number ones is a big achievement in my chart, especially for solo singer. On this moment of time I don't have a full list of 50s and 60s # 1s, but in the next three decades (70s, 80s, 90s) only Madonna had more solo # 1s.

Lovely ballad "Sometimes" is the second # 1 for Britney Spears. It's a teen pop song that is influenced by bubblegum pop, and alludes to a relationship where a shy girl is reserved on expressing feelings to her lover.

"Sometimes" chartruns and peak positions didn't reach the level of insane popularity, which "Baby One More Time" had some months before. The single became # 1 only in three major national charts (New Zealand, Netherlands and Flanders)

Her ballads usually were successful in my chart. From Britney's albums I prefer "Oops! I Did It Again" and "Circus" over "Baby One More Time", but a debut CD had very strong singles' selection and maybe will produce additional # 1 hits.

Predictable # 1 for Steps, it's already their 7th consecutive number one since their debut in the end of 1997. Westlife have the same record in the real UK Chart. "Love's Got a Hold on My Heart" was the first single from the second album "Steptacular". Once again they narrowly missed the number one in UK spot following a last minute surge by my least favourite song of 1999 year (Ricky Martin - Livin' La Vida Loca).

"Kiss Me" is the most worldwide popular and successful single from American Christian group Sixpence None The Richer, also it's their first number one in my chart. The band's name comes from a book by C. S. Lewis called "Mere Christianity".

The year after the release of the album Sixpence None the Richer, "Kiss Me" was released as a single on August 11, 1998. Exactly three months after the debut release of the single, a popular teen drama "Dawson's Creek" played "Kiss Me" as background music. In January 1999, Miramax used "Kiss Me" as the main theme song of its teen romantic comedy film "She's All That". The film's box office success helped "Kiss Me" to gain widespread mainstream attention and chart success with # 1 in two countries (Australia and Canada) and top 10 result in many charts (Austria, Belgium, New Zealand, UK, US, Germany, Ireland, Italy, Switzerland, Norway).

# 1 : Geri Halliwell - Mi Chico Latino

Second # 1 single from my favourite album of this year "Schizophonic". "Mi Chico Latino" is the unique number one, because it's only one "summer hit", which was my chart topper. It is a Latin pop song which is centred on a lost love theme. The song was written by Halliwell in order to pay homage to her mother, who has Spanish background, whilst it also has a number of Spanish lyrics.

Geri Halliwell occupied top 2 positions, her previous single "Look At Me" was # 2 on the first week in chart for "Mi Chico Latino". Steps got the same achievement in the end of 1998 with "Heartbeat" and "Tragedy". In past three biggest acts in the history of my chart (Madonna, ABBA, Blondie) also had personal top 2 in one week.

This song had a commercial success in UK, debuting at number one in Singles Chart, becoming Halliwell's first number one solo single in her home country.
