My retro charts (1999-2003)

I would like to see more of your weekly charts, especially no.1s!

I will like to start with retrospective charts from my favourite period in music (1999-2003).

1. For this retrospective I used the singles charts from fourteen countries : United Kingdom, Ireland, Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Australia, New Zealand, Norway, Finland, Sweden, Netherlands (Top 100), Belgium, Denmark (from danskehitlister.dk, possibly it's not official chart), United States (Billboard Hot 100).

2. Also I added the songs from the national pre-selections for Eurovision Song Contest.

3. Only singles are available. So there is no place for album tracks and B-sides. I did the exclusion only for Eurovision related songs, not all from them were singles, especially the entries from small countries and Eastern Europe. For simple Russia and Lithuania never have the singles market.

4. I didn't include some country songs from Billboard 100 in my chart, because they didn't have physical release, only airplay on radio stations.

5. It's very rare thing, but I will exclude the singles from popular artists without any official video. I did it for Ace of Base - Everytime It Rains, as I remember Shania Twain also didn't have the official videos for late "Come On Over" singles.

# 1 : Denise Van Outen and Johnny Vaughan - Especially For You

UK chart : 3-5-7-16-30 (5 weeks)

After # 2 at Christmas week (behind Steps - Heartbeat) English actress and singer Denise Van Outen climb to # 1 with a cover version of classic Kylie Minogue's # 1 hit "Especially For You" (her duet with Jason Donovan). In my retrospective chart it was the third Kylie's number one after "I Should Be So Lucky" and "Got To Be Certain" (all singles were released in 1988).

Probably for the first time in a history of my retrospective chart both versions (original and cover version) became number ones.

UK chart : 9-17-26 (3 weeks)

On the ninth week in the chart Shania Twain got her 9th # 1 single (and the fourth # 1 hit from "Come On Over" era) with a country pop track "From This Moment On", taken from her third and the best studio album "Come On Over". She had the most # 1 songs in 90s decade.

# 1 : Ace Of Base - Always Have, Always Will

UK chart : 12-16-16-17-19-24-34 (7 weeks)

After unpredictable and unusual for my chart 1-6 drop we have a new queens and kings of the chart. Swedish 90s pop group Ace Of Base got their 8th number one ""Always Have, Always Will" (UK # 12) in very strong competition against the compatriots Graaf Sisters and American rock band Hole. The song was released as the single from "Flowers" album in many countries, but at different times. Usually (and in this case too) I have been using a date of UK release.

Two Swedish sisters Hannah and Magdalena Graaf got their second consecutive # 1 hit song with "Never Never" (# 16 in Sweden). In 2006 year younger sister Hannah will join in a very small club of singers, which had solo # 1 hit (in her situation it was wonderful single "Naughty Boy", also known as my all-time favourite Melodifestivalen song) after the split of group with #1 singles in my chart.

I could say something about the interesting battle for # 1 on the next week, but there is not any possible surprises. Almost everybody can give a correct prediction about the next # 1 single in this chart.

Best comeback in a history of pop music !!!

"Maria" was Blondie's first single since "War Child" in July 1982 and became Blondie's sixth UK number one single exactly 20 years after their first chart-topper "Heart of Glass".

In my chart Blondie were even bigger than in the real world, "Maria" became their 12th number one hit and the first since "Call Me" # 1 debut in April 1980.

Blondie still hold all-time record with fantastic 11 (!!!) consecutive # 1 songs, from "In The Flesh" to "Atomic".

UK chart : 1-1-2-3-3-4-6-7-11-15-17-19-21-24-27-25-27-31 (18 weeks)

Spears' first single "Baby One More Time" was # 1 in all (!!!) fourteen charts, which I used for compiling my retrospective.

Nice pure pop track, but for me it's not all-time classic and even not the best debut single in 1999.

On that moment of time nobody could not predict her long music career, but she still on the pop scene, even if her albums are not very successful in the streaming era.

"I'll Think Of A Reason Later" is the main song on this week. This track was recorded by American country music singer Lee Ann Womack and released as the second single from her second album "Some Things I Know".

The song reached number 2 on the country chart and remained there for four weeks, having been blocked from number one by Kenny Chesney's "How Forever Feels". Also it was the first Lee Ann's top 40 result in Billboard Hot 100.

Big number of American entries is the huge suprise for me. I predicted British domination in these retrospective charts, but was wrong. Country music is obviously the prerogative of Unites States.
