It has been reported in the British media on Sunday that Years & Years were “rejected” by the BBC and TaP Music for Eurovision 2022, in favour of the eventual runner up Sam Ryder.

The Mail on Sunday reports that Olly Alexander, now the only permanent member of the popular electro-pop project Years & Years, put himself forward to represent the United Kingdom in Turin, but was unable to due to his contract with Polydor and the requirement for the chosen artist to be on the books of TaP Music.

The Mail reports that Olly “was left quite deflated” by the decision and the terms of the BBC’s agreement with TaP. The article goes on to say “the only reassuring thing is that Olly has been told he stands a good chance of being selected if he puts his name forward next year, as long as the rules change.”

Olly notably was seen tweeting along to the various shows of the Eurovision Song Contest this year so is clearly a fan, and would certainly be a popular and credible choice for the 2023 contest if he were to be successfully selected.

Sam Ryder was selected in February to represent the United Kingdom at Eurovision 2022 with “Space Man”. On Saturday night, Sam became the most successful UK representative of the 21st century, winning the jury vote and finishing second overall with 466 points, the United Kingdom’s highest ever score in the Eurovision Song Contest. It was the sixteenth occasion the United Kingdom finished second in Eurovision, extending their record as the country with the most runner-up finishes.

What do #YOU think about the decision? It certainly paid off for the UK in Turin, but would Years & Years make for a good choice for the United Kingdom in 2023? Share your thoughts with us on our forum HERE or join the discussion below and on social media!
