It’s the second Saturday in February, and it’s semi-super! Latvia’s national final, Supernova, has just concluded its final. Fifteen acts began Latvia’s selection, and only ten performed today in the final to represent Latvia at the Eurovision Song Contest held this year in Sweden. Who won it all? The running order of the final was as follows:
1. Vēstulēs – “Kur?”
2. Avéi – “Mine”
3. Papīra Lidmašīnas – “Mind Breaker”
4. Katrīna Gupalo – “The Cat’s Song”
5. Ecto – “Outsider”
6. Dons – “Hollow”
7. Saint Levića – “Tick-Tock”
8. Edvards Strazdiņš – “Rock n’ Roll Supernova”
9. Funkinbiz – “Na chystu vodu (На чисту воду)”
10. Alekss Silvers – “For the Show”

The winner was determined by a 50/50 combination of a jury vote and a televote. The final, just like the semi-final, was hosted by Ketija Šēnberga and Lauris Reiniks. Several acts revised their performances, with either staging revamps or costume changes. Before the results of the final were announced, we were treated to performances from Lithuania’s Gabrielius Vagelis and Estonia’s Alika! After Dons’s performance, LTV showed us the current televoting totals.
At the end of the show and with the voting lines closed, the results started coming in. Similar to last year, rather than revealing the full jury and televote results, the hosts announced in ascending order, the final rankings of each act. The acts were announced as follows: Papīra Lidmašīnas (10th), Funkinbiz (9th), Avéi (8th), Ecto (7th), Edvards Strazdiņš (6th), Saint Levića (5th), Alekss Silvers (4th), and Katrīna Gupalo (3rd). That left Vēstulēs and Dons left to be announced and after an obligatory reality TV pause, Dons with the song “Hollow” was announced as the winner, meaning that Vēstulēs finished as the runner-up. Now that Dons has won Supernova, it’s time to prepare for Malmö! Latvia will be performing in the second half of the second Semi-final, held on May 9. Dons will have a heavy burden on his shoulders, as Latvia has failed to qualify for the Grand Final since 2016. Could this be the year we see Latvia in the Grand Final? We’ll just have to wait and see in 3 months’ time.
