Following the results of Söngvakeppnin, Iceland’s national selection, the RÚV broadcaster has confirmed that Iceland will be participating at Eurovision this year in Malmö. In addition, Hera Björk will be the country’s representative with the song “Scared of Heights”.
After Söngvakeppnin concluded on 2 March, the selection has been filled with drama following Hera Björk’s win and subsequently Bashar Murad’s loss. Irregularities with the SMS voting was discovered after the results, and additionally, Einar Hrafn Stefánsson, one of the songwriters for Bashar Murad’s entry “Wild West”, called for an investigation. And just recently, one of the songwriters for “Scared of Heights”, Ásdís María Viðarsdóttir, severed ties with the song.
However, all of that drama being said, Iceland will still be performing in the contest, and the results of Söngvakeppnin will stand. Today was the final day for delegations to submit their songs for the upcoming contest. Iceland will compete in the second half of the first semi-final on 7 May. Iceland last participated last year in Liverpool with the song “Power” as performed by Diljá. Iceland failed to qualify in 11th place with 44 points.
