Such an enjoyable year, extremely catchy for the competition standards in early days... The Allisons are my winners, because I love their attitude and the song is really an earworm. Great debut for Spain, I must say: Estando Contigo is really a memorable song, and Conchita Bautista was such a performer. Nous Aurons Demain is quite easily the best classic chanson in the list, because my top 2 is quite uptempo for 1961. Other songs I enjoyed are Sweden, Monaco and Italy, for different reasons: the first two for being really catchy, my country for the vocals and performance provided by Betty Curtis. The actual winner is middle of the road for me: not the best option, but not the worst either.

I have mixed feelings about 1962... For sure not the best year of Eurovision, and the final results were quite shocking for me (I mean, Luxembourg and Monaco podium finishers??? Why, precisely? Well, at least the winner is good: not the best winner ever, but still a good song). My personal winner is Germany: as an "Italiener", I find the song memorable and the performance adorable. The Netherlands, Spain and Austria all deserved a top 10 spot.

What can I say: one of the most predictable outcomes ever. Dansevise was way better than any other song this year, so I'm not surprised it actually won the Contest. I find the contest itself kinda underwhelming songwise: a lot of classic chansons with not that much of creativity. I'm ok with other five or six songs, but that's it: nothing really memorable. Except, obviously, the winner...

Wonderful contest, such a pity we cannot see the live performances because a lot of these songs are memorable and sung by great singers. I'm sorry to put Gigliola second place, but I just ADORE "Dés que le printemps revient", one of my favourite songs of the 60s. But there are so many songs I like: Spain, Germany, The Netherlands, Austria (with THE best Udo Jürgens entry), France was so sweet, Portugal have a nice debut... I just love Copenhagen 1964!

To be honest, quite a mediocre year songwise... but with an excellent winner! France Gall literally IS Eurovision, imo: she delivered in Neaples the biggest slap on the face of the "How a yé yé girl can win a Chanson contest?" people. The first big upset of the entire competition history and what an upset it was. The kind of upset that changed Eurovision forever! The rest: Germany was unfairly underrated (last place? Really?), France totally overrated with one of their worst songs since that point, Kathy slightly overrated but a fine second place, I guess, and oh... Ireland debuted: quite an underwhelming debut, but good times will come.

Good year with an underwhelming winner: Udo won with the worst song of the three he actually sang in Eurovision. Not a bad song, but in my opinion truly forgettable. For the first time, the northeners really revealed their strenghts: Norway and Sweden's performances are soooo memorable, Finland song is a nice one too... The flops: Uk and expecially France were really underwhelming. My country aswell was and finished dead last: deservedly so, because chansons like "Dio, come ti amo" were over after mademoiselle Gall washed them away in 1965. Yes, there was still time for some old school chanson, with Raphael leading the way with a fantastic performance, but modern times had come, and the impact of Gall's win was immediate: Belgium and Portugal for example tried different paths, with kinda catchy songs and performances. Sign of the times.

Great year, with a solid winner and lots of evergreen entries. My favourite of the year is my favourite Irish entry ever: If I could choose In my opinion is just the best ballad ever in Eurovision history and one of the best songs ever presented in Eurovision. Everything worked: lyrics, voice, music, progression, absolutely stunning entry. My podium is completed by the iconic Vicky Leandros and L'Amour est bleu, one of the most famous Eurovision songs outside Eurovision, and by the actual winner. Loved the entries from Portugal and Spain aswell. Good effort from my home country, with Claudio Villa delivering one of his great vocal performances. 1967 was really a good edition.

First year I'm really not convinced by the Final results, or so it seems. La la la is maybe my least favourite winner of the '60, unfortunately: I can't stand all those la's, I found them annoying. And Cliff is not that high on my top too... My winner is actually Germany: a really catchy and uplifting song (with a wiser use of the la's) and Wencke's performance was totally adorable. Yugoslavia is also high in my ranking: love it, particularly the chorus. Great return for Isabelle Aubret aswell: a deserved podium in my opinion. Finland and The Netherlands were really underrated that night, but are actually good songs.

The year of four winners is everytime so hard to rank, I can see why the result was so close in the end: there wasn't a true runaway winner or a song that is really above the others. The outcome was pretty fair: I have all of the four winners in my top 8 too, with Salomé winning because of her energy and the way she delivered her song, and Lulu being only eight because I think her winning song didn't aged as well as the other three winners. But 1969 had some crimes too: Kirsti being last with the catchiest chorus in the competition and a happy and funny performance was one of those crimes (most undeserved last place ever, as I said), Germany, Italy and Portugal being so underrated are other major crimes, imo...

Amsterdam 1970: what a slow start for such a great Eurovision decade... A totally unremarkable year, with only 12 countries participating and a sweet but unimpactful winner: Dana won fairly, but her song is not even close to be the best winner of all time... My favourite was Mary Hopkin and her "Knock knock (who's there?)", one of the so many silver medals achieved by the perennial runner-up the Uk was. Germany and Spain were not that bad, Gianni Morandi was good too I guess, but it ends there... As I said this contest was totally forgettable.

Now, here was where the '70s officially started: Dublin 1971, the year of returns (the Nordics, Austria and Portugal), of debuts (Malta and... a 15 years old girl from Haugesund which will eventually become a Eurovision winner) and the year of one of the best winning songs ever: "Un banc, un arbre, une rue" was a fantastic winner and that song still feels relevant today. Lots of good songs in the mix: Italy, Germany, Switzerland and Spain for example are all really great. The flops were Belgium and Yugoslavia, which were not totally ready to the switch between the chansons of the '60s and the more uplifting vibes of the '70s. Oh, the debuts, I forgot: Norway and Malta closed the ranking, but I find them interesting. "Lykken er" was underrated, like almost all Norwegian entries until the '80s (when that 15 year old girl from Haugesund named Hanne Krogh will eventually take her revenge...), while Marija I-Maltija brought the Maltese language on Eurovision and it was a pleasant song and experience overall: please Malta, we need Maltese back at Eurovision.

Not a wow year, but not that bad either: Luxembourg won and Vicky is my winner too, Uk and Germany completed the podium at Edinburgh and they are in my top 10 aswell, but I love Ireland (in Irish!) and Portugal more. Some countries took 1972 as a pause year: Italy and Spain for example, which brought entries way below their standards of the late '60-early '70s and even Monaco, after their fantastic, surprising and deserved win in 1971. Belgium continued to struggle in finding its place at Eurovision, while Malta leaves us temporarily after its second (and really undeserved) consecutive last place.

Mixed feelings about this year: the top 4 is really, really strong, one of the best top 4 ever in Eurovision because all those songs really deserved, but as I scroll down the ranking I don't really find the others so impressive. "Tu te reconnaitras" won and it is a great winner, though I would have preferred "Ey Sham": Israel debuted with an evergreen and one of the most memorable songs of the wonderful '70s. Uk and Spain were great too: both are huge fan favourites still to this day and deserved to be on the podium. The rest, as I said, not that good: I find Finland, The Netherlands and Sweden quite uplifting and the portuguese entry good, but not great. On the other hand France and Germany were really forgettable, Switzerland annoying and Belgium and Ireland really mediocre.

Such an iconic year, with so many great backstories: 1974 was the first of the only two times France wasn't competing due to the death of Jacques Pompidou days prior to the Contest, was the year of "E Depois de Adeus", famous for its use during the Revolucão dos cravos in Portugal, was the year Greece entered the competition for the first time, was the year Gigliola came back to represent Italy and finished second, was the year a young Olivia Newton John represented the UK finishing fourth and, expecially, was the year Sweden started its succesful campaign in Eurovision with an unknown band named ABBA, a totally deserved winner even if "Waterloo" is not my favourite ABBA song. "I see a Star" and " Celui qui reste et Celui qui s'en va" complete my top 3. Overall a solid year, with lots of good songs: not the best year of the decade, but still pretty competitive.

I have mixed feelings about the results of 1975 contest: how the heck Germany only came 17th with that performance? How the heck Luxembourg and Sweden came top 10 with their worst entry of the '70s? How did Monaco not entered the top 10? Yeah, the results were a mess. At least, the winner is actually good: Ding-a-dong is really catchy and memorable. But eventually, Joy gave us one of the best performances ever so I have Germany as my winner, once again.

Den Haag 1976, not the best year ever but far from being the worst. Except for my country: our entry in 1976 was horrendous and didn't deserved to be that high up on the scoreboard, musically a bunch of total crap. I think "We'll live it all again" is the worst song we've ever sent to Eurovision. The Uk won and I agree: "Save your kisses for me" is quite iconic and the performance was really appealing (love the coreography). My second place is Belgium, really underappreciated, but really great: "Judy et Cie" is among my favourite belgian entries ever and probably was penalized by its strong and in part controversial lyrics. ABBA and Teach-in paved the way for catchy songs, giving the "coup de grâce" at the "Chansons era" of Eurovision and my top 10 is so full of uplifting entries, with an exception: "Panaghia mou, Panaghia mou" sang by Mariza Koch is a little gem and totally belongs in my top 5.

London 1977 was surely a funny one: lots of uplifting song, great music, great rhythm. And yet, Marie Myriam won with possibly the most classical song of the entire competition. Don't get me wrong, still a good winner, but not my favourite ever. My personal winner was the UK, again: rock bottom is a great song, the performance was really good and I love dueling pianos. Greece was also very memorable: "Mathima solfège" is maybe their most iconic one of the classical era and in my opinion deserved a podium spot. Finland was the best of the nordics, also considering Norway and Sweden were among the worst ones in this edition: "Lapponia" sung by Monika Aspelund is a fan favourite and even one of my personal favourites this year. Good efforts by Germany, Ireland, Italy and Spain, while Ilanit returned for Israel with a way worse song than "Ey Sham".

Paris 1978 was a transitioning contest between the '70s and the upcoming '80s, so it was not really memorable songwise and quite uneventful, except for the returns of Denmark (after 11 years) and Turkey. Even the winner was not that great: "A-ba-ni-bi" has aged like milk imo, even though I can see why it was so appealing in 1978. My favourite song of this edition is "L'amour ça fait chanter la vie", a more than decent runner up and actually my favourite belgian entry, but Germany and Spain were really good too and in my opinion, really underrated (expecially Spain). The crimes of the year were Finland, Turkey and expecially Austria being so low-placed and Ireland being 5th (I really don't stand his shouty vocals).

Jerusalem 1979 has the most shocking results I saw since now: Israel and Spain first and second? Atrocious! "Hallelujah" is not bad but long to be the best song of this particular year, "Su Canción" was literally the worst song Spain presented until then. Switzerland was pretty bad too, the worst Peter, Sue and Marc performed at Eurovision, yet they came into top 10. Finland and Belgium are great, yet they came 14th and last respectively. Shocking results, for real. At least my winner "Je suis l'enfant soleil" came on the podium, Dschingis Khan was not snubbed and Denmark achieved a good result.

What an iconic and memorable edition! Den Haag 1980 has for sure one of the strongest and musically speaking most interesting rosters I've ever seen: from Belgium and it's minimalistic electronic approach, to Luxembourg singing about penguins, from Germany going theatrical to Switzerland preferring Cinémas instead, from Norway going for Sami traditional joik to Sweden sending a more unconventional rockish entry, from Morocco bringing Arabic in Eurovision in their only appearance to Johnny's first win with a classic Eurovision ballad. My winner though, with the best Dutch entry ever, is Maggie MacNeal and the memorable and anthemic "Amsterdam". In all this, my country sucked once again and we finally decided to take a little break after a long streak of awful to mediocre entries.

If 1980 was a memorable contest, Dublin 1981 is one of the most underwhelming contests ever: the podium finishers of that year were still good, but quality-wise this is definitely a weaker year. Israel returned (so, Morocco left...) and returned with a great effort, Jean-Claude Pascal, a previous winner, returned with a great song, one of the best of that year, but was obviously too late for chansons (I would have loved to see his song placed better though). As I said France, Germany and the Uk were also good, not fantastic, but good enough to deserve a podium. The others: Greece had a great ballad, Portugal was funny, Austria and Finland were the big floppers of the year, Sweden was solid, while Yugoslavia return with a good entry, but not one of their most memorable ones.

This really was a bad year: the only four songs I like are in my top 4, with Anna Vissi saving this year for me (Mono I agapi is a masterpiece!). This should have been the first chapter of the Israel vs. Cyprus rivalry (way before Netta vs. Foureira). The rest is mediocre or bad, or even atrociously bad, like my bottom 6 where I was basically ranking mediocrity. One of the worst editions if you ask me, but at least Nicole won with one of the songs I actually like: hooorray to me!

Quite surprisingly, I don't have any of the big fan favourites as a winner in 1983. "Hai" by Ofra Haza is the most convincing in my opinion, and it comes only second to Portugal, which I adore: very sweet ballad, with a stunning melody: maybe the best ballad of the '80s. Fan favourites I said: two of them are actually in my top 3 aswell, "Hai" performed by Ofra Haza confirmed Israel's magic touch in this Eurovision era, "Džuli" is one of the most memorable Yugoslavian entries ever. "Si la vie est cadeau", the actual winner, is not so high on my list: Luxembourg had better entries and I don't think this song deserved the win, despite Corinne's great vocal performance. "Främling" by Carola is another instant classic: I see why this took back Sweden on the podium, but I don't have it on my top 3. "Fantasiaa" was low in the night and it's low on my ranking too and there is a why: it literally is a plagiat of "Cambodia" by Kim Wilde released the year prior (and I don't know how EBU didn't realized this back then), so I must downgrade it even if I don't dislike it by any means. A mention for the 0 pointers: neither "Opera" nor "¿Quien Maneja mi barca?" deserved it, these songs were quite memorable if you ask me.

Luxembourg 1984 offered us one of the worst results ever in the competition: Sweden won with their worst song of the '80s by far and one of their worst ever (I know it has some fans and I will really love if they explain me what is good in that song or performance, because for me is a big nothing). To add even more shame, Belgium came fifth, FIFTH, with the most annoying and boring song I've ever listened. Actually, this is one of the few years I have my country as the winner: "I treni di Tozeur" is a great classic and one of the best songs we have send to Eurovision. I would have been fine with Denmark or Ireland winning too. But Sweden? That year? Come on, no way!

1985, contrarily to 1984, have a pretty fair result. "La det' swinge" confirmed what I thought about the previous winner: both songs are uptempo, but "La det' swinge has more rhythm, more energy, the chorus is not an annoying onomathopea, is sung better, has better music and seemed less amateurish. That makes it a fair winner. In the meantime, Israel confirmed itself at the top with another absolute banger ang THE best song Izhar Cohen have sent to Eurovision and Sweden redeemed itself partially with a good song which deserved its podium spot. Overall a good year, with nordics leading the way: Denmark and Finland, as you can see, are in my top 10 too and ofc Austria, Germany and Spain aswell with good efforts. My country: disappointing, with another cliché song performed by the most loved and hyped duo of the period. Fortunately this was their last time: they had good songs, but did not perform good songs in Eurovision.

Bergen 1986 is an underrated contest, there, I said it. Really underappreciated by fans, or so it seems, with a controversial winner which lied about her age to be there (no problem with that, because she was great that night) and some beautiful vocal performances. I know, most of you may consider this contest too ballady, but I have no problems with this if the ballads are actually good songs. And that's why I have Switzerland (stunning performance!), Luxembourg (very good) and Yugoslavia (oooh young Doris...well we all know she can sing) so high on my list. So yeah, ballads I said, but also some catchiness provided by the nordics (Denmark and Sweden are both good). The results were fair enough, with the only crimes being France and Cyprus too low on the scorboard and Uk and Ireland way too high.

Now this is what a BAD, really BAD contest looks like: I care literally only for my top 5, the rest is quite uneventful. And yes: I have my country in the first place yet again and I think that year we must have won. "Gente di Mare" was and still is a great song, very impactful and was a big hit for a reason. Johnny won that contest and, to be honest, I'm ok with "Hold me now": it's literally one of the few good other songs in the competition. Then I have Norway, which was good, The Netherlands and Germany were catchy and deserved a high placement. The rest is meh to terrible: in all this mediocrity Turkey didn't deserved last (at least their act is energetic).

Now, here I agree on the fact this contest has too many ballads and that's because a lot of them aren't good. But, actually we have some good ones and was only obvious they were on top for this particular year. Now, that said, Cèline fans and swiss fans don't hate me, but I actually prefer "Croire", "Go" and "Stad i ljus" to "Ne partez pas sans moi". It's just a matter of taste, I think. Then in my top 10, providing some action, I have Israel, Denmark and Spain. PS: "Lisa, Mona Lisa" is in my opinion the worst song EVER performed in Eurovision. Not hating on Wilfried, but the song is actually horrendous and deserved its "nul points".

If I'll ask Eurofans about what do they think of Lausanne 1989, I'll certainly receive the same answer: awful contest, mediocre winner, terrible podium. And, quite frankly they will not be totally wrong: I mean I think the podium is awful too, with the Uk in second (worst runner up ever, imo) and Yugoslavia being the winner (and a really underwhelming one). That said, I think the real problem of how this contest is perceived are the awful results it produced more than the quality of the songs. I, for example, think my actual top 7 is very good, with peaks of excellence in Portugal (yeah, I know the lyrics of "Conquistador" are really controversial and if something like this would come out in today's World, the artists will be put on the stake by social media in 5 minutes, but come on! The music and performance were brilliant! I can listen to this all day without being bored!), Finland (Great music and performance again), Sweden (strong ballad with the best backup singers I've ever seen), Luxembourg (really catchy entry which perfectly mixed modern and retró vibes), Denmark delivery one of its '80s bops with another really good performance, Spain with a power ballad sung by the best vocalist (by far!) in the competition and Greece with a really smooth song. And I'm totally ok with other 7 or 8 songs, so this year was not that bad, but the results made it bad.

Ah yeah, the "Wall" year... Actually, it is one of my favourite contests of the '90s (with '94 and, expecially and best of all, 1997): lots of feel good songs, lots of actual good songs and great music. Spain is my winner for this particular year, but I love all the songs in my top 7 and really like all the songs in my top 16, so a really good year despite the "Love love, peace peace" leit-motiv in almost all the songs.

Allora... Let's say Rome 1991 is a memorable contest for the wrong reasons: Toto & Gigliola hosting it in Italian and the incredible Final voting section resulting in a tiebreaker stole the show and actually kinda made everyone forget this is actually a good year, songwise. My top is quite Unpopular: I don't have Sweden and France in my top 3, occupied by Israel, Greece (that saxo ruined her chances) and Portugal. Anyway, I like my top 10 for that particular year and I think there are some underachievers (I don't find Austria that dreadful for example. Totally fine ballad to me) and overachievers (Spain and the Uk particular, not that fond of their songs), but it was a fair contest.

Dreadful year, totally forgettable... The only things I remember is Christer Björkman was in the contest with an awful song, Mia was among the best and Ireland was the sure winner from the start, since "Why me?" is the only song which could have been an Eurovision winner. This contest was a snoozefest: boring acts, boring songs, even the more rythmic ones were really bad. In my opinion Mälmo 1992 is a strong candidate for the title of "Worst Eurovision ever", at least songwise.

Eurovision discovers the East: with Slovenia, Croatia and Bosnia & Herzegovina debuting after the fall of Yugoslavia, new actors come to the stage: Bosnia and Croatia are good, Slovenia is nothing exceptional, but far to be their worst entry. This was the year of Niamh Kavanagh and Barbara Dex: Niamh won with a really good song (and a really great performance), Barbara came last but entered history forever for her dress. Unfortunately, because "Iemand als jij" didn't deserved last place: the song is good and even performed very well. My favourite song of the year is "Alle mine tankar" by Silje Vige, a very theatrical number sung with intensity and accompanied by a stunning arrangement.

Well, my country chose the wrong year to withdraw: Dublin 1994 is one of the best years in the '90s, musically speaking. Yeah, some may say is too ballady, but I don't think so because some of those ballads were stunning. Hungary debuted with an absolute MASTERPIECE: I love that song and performance to bits, it's a "must listen" for every new Eurovision fan and it deserved to win, but... Well, let's say Ireland was just incapable to lose at that point: how the f*ck they thought they couldn't have been among the favourites with "Rock 'n' roll kids" is beyond me! It's a really nice ballad, has great lyrics and Paul and Charlie delivered it with such passion it was impossible for them to lose. Literally, impossible. Russia debuted with a bang too and even Estonia, which was massively underrated, presented a wonderful song in my opinion. Edyta was phenomenal for Poland, her vocal abilities shone that night and the podium was very well deserved. Definitely a great contest, with a really competitive top 15.

An ok year, nothing spectacular, a tad boring, but acceptable. Surely not the most memorable contest from the '90s. Norway thought: "Why do we waste our time writing lyrics when we can easily win this with only a line?": actually they were right! The music in it is still gorgeous, by the way. Ireland finally finds a way to lose a contest, yuppie! Sweden was the clear pre-contest favourite, as always: the song was not bad at all, but maybe too bland for the juries, which by the way preferred the powerful voice of Anabel (who, btw, is my winner) as a second place. A wild Kirkorov appeared on the stage: at the time, we didn't know that he would show up year after year at Eurovision to suck its blood like a vulture.
