Mecklenburg-Vorpommern is one of the 16 German states and is located in the north-east of Germany. With the coastline on the Baltic Sea and the two biggest islands of the country, Rügen and Usedom, the state of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern has become one of the most popular tourist destinations of Germany. It has also been the host of one of the biggest political events in the world, the G8 summit in Heiligendamm, back in 2007. In addition to this, it's the home of former president Joachim Gauck and the current chancellor, Angela Merkel. With the universities of Rostock and Greifswald, it's also the home to the two oldest universities in the Baltic Sea region.
