WV 198: Sigur Rós - untitled #1 (Vaka)

25 editions. That's how long I didn't send my favorite band albeit being in charge of Iceland during the whole time. That was reason enough for me to give them another shot (it's their 11th participation) even more so since I didn't have a better idea and didn't want to organize another NF for now.
​

In the past the WV community was introduced to Sigur Rós songs from 5 different studio albums and one compilation album. The highly acclaimed untitled 2001 album was not featured yet. Consequently I thought it was time to try one of the unnamed songs of that album. According to the frequent mood of my songs I chose the most depressing piece which is the albums opener thats been inofficially called Vaka named after the daughter of the drummer Orri.

As you can watch yourself Vaka has a memorable music video that actually won the 2003 MTV Europe Music Awards. It shows a post-apocalyptic world in which school children get ready to go outside and play. They can only leave the facilities with many layers of clothes and gas masks into a yard covered in black ash falling from a red sky. The children play in the ash as if it was snow until one of the girls loses her gas mask. Her classmates gather around her as she falls to the ground and closes her eyes.
It really hits deeply.

Now I finally send the entry that got 2nd in WV 197 NF and would actually have won if I only counted the votings of those users who actually took part in that edition. So I felt that at some point I had to send it. I was shocked when I realized this is my first entry in Icelandic language since WV 188 (the Sigur Ros entry in wv 198 was in imaginary language) and in general I only sent 1 1/2 Icelandic language entries since WV 180. Maybe that's the reason I became such a flop in WV. I remember back in the days I actually took care of alternating langauges but I lost this focus recently.
Do you wanna hear more Icelandic again while I am in charge of Iceland? ​

WV 201: Elín Hall - Heaven to a Heathen

This time I send another debutant (who has been in a NF before though): The cute Elín Hall, one of the upcoming shooting stars of Icelandic music industry. In fact, she's been in music business for roughly a decade already and actually took part in the National Final for ESC 2015 in which she performed the song "I kvöld". I forgot the song, but she was veeery young, adorable and cute. But only in the last couple of years Iceland music fans took notice of her work, especially due to that lovely 2023 album Heyrist í mér. Also the popular online magazin Reykjavik Grapevine hyped her a lot in the last couple of years, rightly so.

Now, Heaven to a heathen is the brand new single of an upcoming album (I guess) and it's her first English record. Beside that, this cute woman is also actress. She wasn't part of a famous movie yet but she had the main role in the drama movie "When the Light Breaks" that got a lot of critical acclaim and was presented in Cannes. This sweetie also starred at the Berlin International Film Festival "Berlinale" early this year and she looked stunning in her white dress. She had been selected for the Shooting Stars group of promising actors and actresses.
I don't know if I mentioned if before but I think she is a cute looking woman. Check out her interviews. That shy and innocent smile!

Söngvakeppnin 202: Ásgeir edition
​

My latest experiences with national final were a little frustrating, yet I will give it another try. For the first in a long while I am going to send my favorite male singer-songwriter Ásgeir again whose music can be best described as "Folktronic" since he combines elements of folk and electronic music. WV veterans know Ásgeir anyway so there is no need for much explanation. He is one of my Icelandic music legends (aka the "fantastic four") beside Sigur Rós, Kaleo and Low Roar (RIP).

I've send him four times before with mixed success but at least Ive made the final in 3 out of 4 times. On the other hand Ásgeir actually won the WV before as featuring act in Eivors "Only Love" when Ben (JamieBrown) was in charge of Iceland. Was I jealous to see somebody else winning with one of "my" artists? Maybe, but I was also happy to see his appearance (even if only as a featuring artist) got so much appreciation.

In this NF I will include songs from all of this four major albums that have been released to this day: one from his banger debut album Dýrð í dauðaþögn (whose eponymous zitle song was my first Ásgeir entry ever ten years ago), two from his follow-up Afterglow, two more from the amazing Bury the Moon and last but not least one of his latest album Time on my Hands. Both Bury the Moon titles took part in a NF before, namely for WV 128. A few people might remember.
