How many countries will compete in 2024?

I wanted to ask you: how many countries will re-enter (or debut) the show, and how many countries will leave?
I'll open some discussions.

RETURNS/DEBUTS

:lu: has been confirmed in the show again, while :mk: is in talks for a return. For :tr:, it all depends on who will win the elections today, I think? Dunno about :me:, :sk: and :ba: but I don't think they will return (maybe only Montenegro?). There are some talks with :mc: (consider this as Monaco and not Indonesia) and :ad:: maybe Monaco could enter? For the debuts, there are :fo: that want to enter, but I see it quite difficult. What about :kz: and :xk:? Kazakistan is competing in JESC and they are trying to enter ESC as well, Kosovo may cause problems with Serbia?
The only country who announced their non-comeback in 2024 is :bg:.

RETIREMENTS
Tough one, we have to speculate a little bit. :au:'s contract expired, will they renew it? I read that they have chosen Voyager this year mainly because they had huge money from their federal government, so I thought they will retire because they can't afford travelling to Europe anymore. :ge: and :lv: may be fed up of not qualifying even with their best proposals in a while (they both came close, at least), and this year I've seen :ro: taking the same steps as Bulgaria last year. Oh, there is also :gr:: I wonder what will happen if Melissa wins the lawsuit, I'm not sure that they will come back in 2024 if then.

Thanx for the summary.

I see no way that Latvia would opt out. It's too popular in the Baltics.

I fear for Romania which I would really miss if they left (please come back Yodelinca)!

I see that there are a slight chance to drag Monaco and/or Andorra back, fingers crossed!

The Faroes seems like a 50/50 chance right now, it would be exciting though.

Montenegro and Macedonia I think are also 50/50.

Australia and Greece will stay in it.

The 37 countries competing this year + :lu: is my guess.
I'm gonna laugh if :pt: pulls out because what is happening behind the scenes with some kind of SVT/RTP quarrel that they don't compete when Sweden is hosting?

The withdrawals happened before they won though, mabye they´re more confident now.

Well seeing how this season went, we will most likely return next year, since this year withdrawal had a lot do with last years scandals and there were no scandals this years involving MRT they have a bit more breathing room.
Also a bonus Tattoo is doing relatively well here despite our non participation (currently 8 on trending and rising).

Why would they specifically withdraw in years of Sweden hosting when it has just something to do with being confident or not? I mean it's probably just coincidence but I think it's funny

I agree it was most likely just a coincidence but I also think that them being eliminated in the semis many times in a row was a reason as well.

I think it will be the 37 countries this year, plus Luxembourg and perhaps Turkey depending on the election results, North Macedonia is a possibility.

I would hope we could get to 40 countries next year, which would be welcome

At least it looks like we're expanding the family again and not just loosing family members, which feels good tbh.

:lu: is obviously returning.
:mk: is almost surely returning too. :tr: will 100% return if the opposition is elected today, it will be quite a statement for the government to make to immediately return to an event like Eurovision.
:mc: will return if the new broadcaster has enough time to set up for Eurovision 2024. They're only launching in September or something, so I don't know if this is possible. But if it isn't, they'll surely return in 2025, because apparently a big part of the reason why they're even setting up a new broadcaster is to return to the contest.
I could also see :me: return, there was a rumour that they're planning on taking part every 2 years.

:ro: is almost certainly withdrawing, they clearly didn't give a single ounce of a F this year. :ge: might get very discouraged by the fact they weren't even close to qualifying. Could also see :sm: withdrawing if the 100% televoting in the semis is kept, to be honest. The only other ones I could see in trouble would be :cz: and :lv:, the latter stating something like a "one-year break to rethink their strategies". I think the top 10 is enough for Czechia to stay, and I think that being only 3 points away from qualifying is enough for Latvia to keep on trying too.

So this would give anything from 35 countries taking part at worst, to 42 at best. It really will be one of the more unpredictable contests to speculate about the number of participants in a long while, I think.

I sure hope we won't come back, we've reached the dead end where no established act wants to work with TVR anymore so we'd only get random no name artists with songs from 2002. To think this year's song was picked by a bunch of big festival managers it's crazy, even them are completely clueless.

I think the same. Romania has a great music industry but what's the point of competing with entries like this year? and also disappointing good artists like Roxen.

I wouldn't be surprised if Romania withdraws and no shade but I wouldn't miss them right now. I didn't like their entries and it's clear that their broadcaster doesn't care that much. I hope Latvia doesn't withdraw. They were close to qualifying. I hope this motivates them. But they definitely need more competitive songs. I love Sudden Lights but I can't say I'm surprised they didn't qualify in a televote only SF.

Is there a chance Bulgaria could come back? I'm deluding myself into thinking yes but I don't want to get my hopes up too much

Australia will return. Top 10 this year (albeit with a disappointing televote) and EBU will make efforts to keep them - with the number of participants at its lowest level in a while, they'll want to keep the Aussies in.

Romania seemed to have given up this year, I don't expect to see them back.

I'm hopeful for Monaco, with their new tv station and also maybe the return of Lux might give them food for thought.

Bosnia - dunno, last I read they owed money to EBU but I dunno has it been repaid?

Morocco - I'd be shocked.

Andorra - unlikely.

Liechtenstein seems to have given up on EBU membership.

Slovakia - Czechia did well this year, so maybe?

Czechia will stay - they had a good result this year.

Turkey - I'm not following the election there so no idea.

Bulgaria - no, the broadcaster seems to have turned against it.

Montenegro and North Macedonia - maybe, if budget can be found.

I think San Marino will stay - they've had bad results before and stayed. It's good publicity for SM. I'm always curious about the funding model

I don't think Latvia or Georgia will withdraw.

Hasn't Kosovo broadcaster joined EBU lately? Would Serbia pull out if Kosovo entered Eurovision?

I think next year we will lose maybe 1 (Romania), and gain 3 (Lux, at least one of Montenegro/North Macedonia, and maybe Slovakia or Turkey). So 39 countries in 2024

If Romania decides to withdraw it is only their fault and they cannot blame anybody else: they had a great reception last year and did relatively well. Romania has had poor ratings for a while now and there is not interest it seems. Also, their national broadcaster is not able to find a proper formula. However, I hope they stay because Romania has such a huge music industry. The fact a country with that music market is not able to enter the finals is crazy to me. They have acts to be in top 5-10 every single year.
