The Baltic nation of Latvia woke up from its lullaby with Latvijas Televīzija (LTV) announcing Latvia’s return to the Eurovision Song Contest. This will be Latvia’s 24th participation having debuted in 2000. In recent years, Latvia has used the Supernova national final format to decide its entry. With the announcement of Latvia’s participation also came the confirmation that Supernova will be used again to select the entry for the 2024 contest in Malmö.

In a document released by LTV, further details about the selection were outlined. After discussing eligibility requirements (song must not have been released before 01 September, artist must be 16 years of age or older, etc.), the second section details how the submissions will be evaluated. A jury determined by LTV will evaluate the submissions and part of their criteria includes song structure, potential to compete in the international pop music market, vocals, and experience.

Prospective Latvian entrants will be able to submit their applications at 0800 on 12 September until 2359 on 1 December. A list of the competing artists in Supernova is expected to be released in January 2024. In addition, the procedure for determining the winner of Supernova will also be released in January 2024 and the winner will be decided in February 2024. Intriguingly, the winner of Supernova will have 2 days to sign a contract with LTV to accept the condition of being the Eurovision entrant. If not, then LTV will look at the runner-up.

The most Latvian entry to the Eurovision Song Contest was “Aijā” by the band Sudden Lights. Latvia competed in the first semi-final, but failed to qualify, having finished in 11th place with 34 points. This marks the sixth straight non-qualification for Latvia in the contest, having last qualified in 2016.
