Hey,

still a little drunk from celebrating our victory last night in Bulgarian chalga discos ^^ I thought about some things:

1. With Germany winning, Austria's argument for withdrawing is no longer valid. The problem is that they did not broadcast the 2010 final, which technically means they can't participate in 2011. Do you think the EBU might let them participate anyway if they want to. Other countries who could be prompted to return or debut: Liechtenstein (EBU memebership is applied for), Luxembourg and Monaco.

2. How do you think Italy will react to a Big4 country winning? I fear they won't give a shit...

3. Germany being a Big 4, does that mean next year we'll only have 4 automatic qualifiers or will Turkey (as 2nd place) be given the honour?

4. Do you think Satellite will be able to chart in European countries?

I for one think it will boost the contests credibility in the West. Caus How can Germany win if the East votes only in Blocks??? ;)

I think that next year we will have 24 countries in the final.

I am also curious about #3 and I was about to ask that. There are few possibilities. I think next year we might have ~35 countries, so they bring the top10 in the final + Big4 and only one semi-final.
I think they will let us know in couple of months or so.

2. Italy won't participate. Simple as that.

4. Yes it will. It is a type of song that will be on the charts. I personally think that Romania and France will be more popular. France is easily a summer hit + World Cup is coming close.

1. I believe from being told time and time again by others that this is no longer a rule :p

2. Hopefully they may see it as a good sign to return but I fear that the Italians may get annoyed if they do not win or do well.

3. I wonder too  I think maybe Turkey would get in..

4. Possibly, it already has in some and I guess it could spread now.

While I don't think Italy will care, Lena's win might just tempt Austria back. Having a song that reached no. 1 win the contest, might help make Eurovision cool to them for a while. Same goes for the Czechs.

I expect Lena to do well in the European charts. Alexander Rybak made the top ten over here last year. I don't think Lena will quite match that - While I now like it, I don't think the song is quite as good as Fairytale - but maybe top 20.

Perhaps the most important consequence of Lena's win, at least in the UK, is that there are no more excuses. We can no longer claim that the result is fixed in Eastern Europe's favour. If we want to win, we have to send a good song. There was an article in The Times yesterday, which made me violently angry at the time, but now I can't stop rereading in light of last night's result.
The Times said:
What are they up against? Belarussians wearing outsized butterfly wings? An androgynous Serb? Dancers dressed as trees? The competition cannot be that hard. Plus, their countries are underwriting the spectacle.

It should be a shoo-in, but it isn’t: the geopolitics of Eurovision has ensured that the paymasters are pushed to the margins. The brute reality of the new Europe, if Eurovision is any guide, is that small countries collude and plot to trip up the grandees from Old Europe.

Under the present voting system neither the Germans nor the British will win. This is testimony to the failure of these countries to build proper bridges within Europe. And, although France and Spain will as usual trade votes, they too will be struggling.

Consider last year’s winner, Alexander Rybak. His family came originally from Belarus. This made him the natural recipient of the East European vote. But clever Rybak speaks Norwegian, the language of his adopted homeland. This secured him votes from the Nordic and Baltic countries. To be safe, he sang Fairytale in English.

About #3. I don't understand why you are wondering so much... Probably there will be only 24 countries in the final. What's the big deal anyway?

I think whether Lena can become a big chart hit (certainly here in the UK) really does depend on whether her record company get their finger out and make the track available pretty sharpish...

Much of Rybak's sales last year came immediately after the contest (Saturday evening and Sunday). Satellite is (currently) not available for purchase here in the UK unless you pay £10.99 for the entire ESC album. If not for that fact then it would be top ten.

I think it's very interesting that Germany have won, especially after years of uncertainty and I highly remember last year there was uproar when Germany flopped in the final again. So in that respect, I'm so glad that Germany have won but this also means that other countries (i.e. UK) have NO more exscuses anymore!!

It shows that all you need is good well written song, launch it to europe a couple of months before the show and let it hope that it does well in the charts. A bit of promotion wouldn't go a miss.

UK almost did it last year but what they lacked was that the song in itself was a tad weak, but next year this should prove to the BBC that eurovision is not totally out of the question when it comes to winning the damn thing.

Next year I would like to see a couple of things happen, firstly the return of Austria, Italy & Monaco. The debut of Leichestein and also a few more countries hopefully returning (please take note Andorra!).

I would also like to see, and I have always said this, that the 2nd and 3rd in the final of this years and any other year should be rewarded with an automatic placing in next years final aswell as the winner. As the winner this year was a Big 4 country and therefore would be in next years final, I think that this is more appropriate than ever.

It's a good little reward, so that the countries with bronze & silver will also get some sort of "reward" and it also means that there will still be enough countries left to justify having 2 semi finals with 9 qualifiers from each.

Wow, so that's the first time a big 4 country wins after the "Big 4" rule. I didn't even think about that.

LOL, that article was really funny. Yeah, so Rybak was deployed there as a secret ploy to win Eurovision. Come on people.

Here it is:

http://www.eurovisionlive.com/englisch/archiv/2010/russland.htm

,,As Russia does not belong to the “Big 4” countries so far, there is going to be a change in 2011, where Russia will belong to that exclusive circle of countries which do not have to qualify for the final. This is due to the fact that Russia is going to pay a higher fee to the EBU. From next year there will be the “Big 5” countries."

I knew it was only a matter of love until Russia joined us!
And if Italy re-joined I would imagine it would be the big 6

tbh I think the rule is very unfair but I still like it haha
