The famous Ukrainian drag Queen Verka Serduchka was interviewed by DigitalJournal discussing her cameo in the Movie “Spy”, the new EP as well as her participation at the Eurovision Song contest 2007 in Helsinki, Finland.
Verka appeared in “Spy” alongside Melissa McCarthy, Jason Statham and Jude Law. “When we agreed to participate in the movie it was like that: I knew nothing about this movie yet, plus wasn’t in my best mood, so asked rather material question: ‘Are they paying?’ Of course we agreed. And when we met Paul Feig, Melissa McCarthy, Jason Statham, they all appeared wonderful people to work with, and all staff was cool and pleasure to contact. It was kind of utterly professional job, which you miss sometimes. I think guys liked how we performed. But, by the way, I haven’t watched the movie. Still afraid.”
Discussing her EP song selection, she said: “I select them as T-shirts. Sometimes you like one, but when you try it, it turns out to be XS, another one fits great, but style is outdated. But if to take it seriously, selection is based only on intuition. Some songs can lay for years, and one day may explode like a bomb. ‘Dancing (Lasha Tumbai)’, which almost won Eurovision 2007, was written in 2004. And when in 2007 we were looking for the right song for Eurovision it was the one, just spot on. Five years later, this number was seen by brilliant director Paul Feig and he decided to use it and set up in his block-buster comedy ‘Spy,’ so we were invited for a cameo.”
And of course, no interview would be complete without mentioning her memorable performance in the Eurovision Song Contest 2007 where Serduchka almost won the whole thing. “Not very modest to describe these moments. Eurovision is definitely one of them.”
Also, when they asked the famous Drag Queen who her dream duet partner would be, she said without missing a beat “I could do something with Justin Bieber. Not sure it will be singing“.
For now, the 41-year-old artist is working on a new album.
