As we rapidly approach another hectic Eurovision weekend, we turn our attention once more to Switzerland who decide their entry for Lisbon on Sunday. One of the candidates is Chiara Dubey, and we spoke to her about her roots, taste in movies and the unique setting to her ideal performance!

Hello Chiara!

First of all thank you for your time talking to us. How are you? Can you introduce yourself? What can you tell us about yourself?

It’s a pleasure, thank you for your interest!

I am a singer-songwriter born in Switzerland, with Swiss and Indian roots. I always was passionate about music since my childhood and decided to dedicate my life to this art. I wanted to learn about classical music – which I am passionate about and is very present in my own songs – so I started studying violin at the Conservatory, and then changed my focus to classical composition.  I will obtain my Bachelor Degree this coming June. My aim is, however, to work on my career as a singer-songwriter, which will be my main occupation from September onwards.

My music is a crossover between classical arrangements and pop, with an aura of dreamy, sometimes dark and ethereal atmosphere, which I suppose somehow reflects my personality. Thoughtful, introverted, poetic. As everything does, I change too and am therefore open to new musical inputs and ideas that my change and enrich my style.

The song that you will be presenting for the Die Entscheidungsshow is “Secrets and Lies”. What can you tell us about the song?

This song was written by Jeroen Swinnen, Janie Price and myself in the songwriting camp in Zürich last summer. It is a delicate ballad that leaves a lot of space for the vocals, which mainly have a soft and whispery colour. It’s text – or my interpretation of it – is about inviting people not to fear being authentic and being themselves.

What was the inspiration for the song, and did you write it specifically for Die Entscheidungsshow and Eurovision?

Because it was a “songwriting camp” situation, where the goal was in fact writing a song for Eurovision, and my role this time is actually more of a performer then a songwriter, the song was born by improvising, by playing with chords and melodies and words, until a track that was convincing was found.

What is your impression of the Eurovision Song Contest in general? Do you watch it every year? What is your favourite entry?

I especially used to watch it as I was a child and always used to wonder, what it might be like to perform on such a stage! It is certainly a great festival and for an artist, a very good platform for exposure. Well no, I didn’t watch it every year, but when I do, I enjoy it!

Apart from the Eurovision Song Contest , where would you dream to do a performance?

I once saw a concert of Paolo Conte in the Philarmonie de Paris with my boyfriend, and thought to myself “It would be a dream to someday perform here!” But well, the higher the ambitions, the closer one gets…

Do you think performing at the Eurovision Song Contest will have a positive impact on your career?

Absolutely. It is first of all a great challenge for me as a performer and as I said, an international exposure.

What is the best bit of advice you have ever been given?

It might be mainstream but this still is to me the best advice: never to give up on dreams, always to be true to yourself and to  just keep on going, not letting failures scare you or stop you.

What’s the one thing that might surprise people about you?

Hmm… I love horror movies!

Can you tell us about your first experience with music?

I don’t know if this is really the very first one, but it is the one I like to remember. When I was a child, I use to have breakfast with Indian tea at the weekend, with my father. Regularly, every single time before breakfast – who knows why at this time of the day –  I use to put on “My heart Will Go On” from Céline Dion and sing along with all the breath I had. This still is one of my favourite songs!

We would like to thank Chiara for her time talking to us and wish her the best of luck with her entry “Secrets and Lies” on Sunday!
