Ahead of this weekend’s French selection for Eurovision 2021, we wanted to get to know the artists a little better, and learn what drove them to participate in the competition.

Today, we’ve had the pleasure to interview Philippine, one of the participants in the selection with “Bah Non”. We spoke about her experience on The Voice, her performance and what the song stands for!

Hi Philippine! Thank you for taking the time to talk to us. How are you preparing yourself for the big day? Can you give us some details about your performance?

I train every day, whether it’s physical or vocal! There will be dancing and a setting that I can’t wait to unveil! 😍

After participating in season 6 of The Voice France, what led you to participate in the Eurovision selection?

I did The Voice in 2018 and they didn’t turn around, but it allowed me to grow and be where I am today. In recent years, I have been told about Eurovision, I have often been tagged on social media as a potential French candidate to represent France. I am very close to my community, and when I saw that outside of France people who don’t speak the same language liked what I was doing, I immediately thought that I was going to trust them and live this adventure with them!

What message do you want to share with ‘Bah Non’?

Like I’ve said on social media, I don’t want anyone to talk about me in this song: I want EVERYBODY listening to this song to feel invincible, strong, courageous and important. Of course, there is a recurrence of ‘Non’, a lot of negations, but which leads to a big YES. “Yes, I am able to say no to a situation that bothers me or makes me vulnerable”. When I wrote this song several months ago, I decided to talk about love because unfortunately we all go through this at some point in our lives, but I don’t want people to only have that in mind.

Whether at work, with our entourage or even regarding reduction of the use of plastic — I was tagged on Instagram with the song behind it and it makes sense, it’s amazing! — we sometimes lose confidence in ourselves and this song can be a release, a boost of self-confidence with simple and effective lyrics and ALWAYS with humor. I often talk about love because I am a 22 year-old girl who has always been in my ‘romantic’ world, I always speak with my heart and in these three songs I open up to others by talking about a meeting in my life which affected me a lot. I know a lot of people go through the same kind of situation, and it’s good to talk about it, to let go with many emotions.

What’s your favorite Eurovision song, and your favorite French Eurovision song?

I love “Amar Pelos Dois” by Salvador Sobral, and “Je n’ai que mon âme” by Natasha St-Pier.

Thank you for your time Philippine. Best of luck in C’est vous qui décidez!

Philippine will take part in this weekend’s Eurovision France, c’est vous qui décidez with the song “Bah Non”, hoping to represent France in this year’s Eurovision Song Contest in Rotterdam.
