Five-time champions Luxembourg may finally get the push they need to return!

It appears that we could be seeing a long awaited return for Eurovision in 2016 if the culture minister of Luxembourg has anything to say about it. Luxembourg’s annual Eurovision Gala Night took place last night in the Duchy and Eurovision 1992 winner Linda Martin was on hand to perform. During her set she called on Luxembourg’s culture minister Maggy Nagel to return the small nation to Eurovision for the first time in 21 years, to which she appeared to agree.

Luxembourg has been absent from Eurovision since 1993.

Of course, this may all be just a pipe dream and the decision ultimately lies with the country’s national broadcaster RTL, but hopefully this will be some positive news for fans longing to see the return of one of Eurovision’s founding nations!

Luxembourg last took part in Eurovision in 1993 where they finished 20th. The microstate has won Eurovision five times, only second in wins to Ireland, and was one of the founding seven countries of the Eurovision Song Contest. However, the grand duchy has been absent since 1994, when they were relegated, owing to a lack of ‘public interest’ and funding.
