Selection season is in full swing, and Greek broadcaster ERT just added one more name to the list of talented artists who will be vying for Eurovision glory: 16-year-old singer-songwriter Victor Vernicos. (He is the youngest ever artist to represent Greece at the contest and the first solo male to do it since 2009.) Victor’s song, an English-language ballad titled “What They Say”, will be released at a later date.

This announcement comes after last week’s news that the Greek selection had been narrowed down to three potential acts. As previously reported by ESC United, the country’s song was selected by the combined scores of two jury panels: a broadcaster committee and an audience committee of 70 members of the public chosen by lottery.

Victor was born in Athens and has been performing music since the age of four. At age 11, he began writing his own music, and he has spent the last two years studying music production. His YouTube channel and Instagram page are full of song covers, and artists like Lewis Capaldi and Greek Eurovision legend Sakis Rouvas have previously given him public shout outs for his work. Victor’s most recently released original song, “Brutally Honest With You”, can be heard below:

In October, Victor announced on Instagram that he was submitting a song to the broadcaster. In the video, posted just 10 days short of his 16th birthday, he made a promise to Greek Eurovision fans:

I’m not playing games, and I’m ready … to win the Eurovision Song Contest.

Time will tell if he can deliver on that promise!

Do #YOU think Victor has what it takes to net Greece its second ever contest victory? Does it make #YOU feel old to know that he was born at least year AFTER the country won Eurovision in 2005? Sound off in the comments below, in our forum, or on social media @ESCUnited.
