la zarra évidemment

The French national broadcaster, France Télévisions, just confirmed that the country will participate in the Eurovision Song Contest 2024 in Sweden, making France the 15th country to confirm Eurovision 2024 participation.

The news was confirmed by France 2 to ESC Today on Wednesday, but no further information were given as of today. We will have to wait further months to know more about how France will select its representative for next year’s Eurovision in Sweden.

National final or internal selection?

After holding a national final in 2021 and in 2022, France went back to the internal selection format las year, which it was the country usually does to select its representative for Eurovision. La Zarra was chosen and the song Evidemment was then born, and finished 16th in Liverpool with 104 points (54 from the jury and 50 from the televote).

The question now remains: will France opt for another internal selection or hold a national final as Eurovision France : C’est vous qui décidez? As a reminder, Barbara Pravi won the national final in 2021 and finished 2nd at Eurovision 2021, and Alvan & Ahez won the 2022 edition of the NF but finished 24th at Eurovision 2022.

Our take: after Barbara Pravi’s huge success in Eurovision with Voilà, only falling 25 points behind the victory to Måneskin, France wished to pursue this success by keeping the same recipe to choose its representative, and thus held another edition or Eurovision France : C’est vous qui décidez. Nevertheless, the success sadly didn’t repeat itself, encouraging the delegation to try things differently and go back to the internal selection.

But after mixed results from Evidemment, only time will tell us how France will choose the next participant to go to Eurovision, although the chances for an internal selection are higher than for a national final considering the backlash from several media about La Zarra’s behavior.

The Junior Eurovision 2023 in Nice

Moreover, France is hosting the Junior Eurovision 2023 in Nice this year. It will take place on November 26 and start at 20:00 CET, instead of the usual format at 17:00 CET.

The slogan this year is Heroes and pre-recorded vocals will be prohibited for the very first time in the history of the contest. As of today, 12 countries confirmed their participation in the contest, and Kazakhstan has sadly withdrew from participating in the contest after participating 5 years in a row.
