Re: Zombira nsc 58 nf

By using countless complex forumals and inserting the data to several computer programs, the Zombiran scientists have managed to figure out that the approximate results of the nf:

the dreams 3
rise against 2,5
the automatic 2
M.I.A. 2
Nena 0

Yay 50th edition and prequalification. That means something crazy which is an Estonian classical music piece influenced heavily of folk and somewhat of metal. Yeah it is a crazy überlong WTF choral piece you all have been waiting for.

Or a sad Estonian folk song which many of you could probably feel to be a bit boring and/or repetitive

So which should i send? You may give your opinions until friday noonish.

I like both. But if I have to choose one, I will go with the second one. It is not boring at all. :)

A bit random info about the songs. They are both composed of Veljo Tormis who is one of the biggest Estonian composers. They are based on the older Estonian folk song style called regilaul (runolaul in Finnish) and it is found only in finno-ugric countries (i think).

Anyway the characteristics of that type of folk song are:

Emphasise on the lyrics
Alliternation and assonance (instead of having rhyme at the end of the lines, it creates rhyme in the beginning of all words)
Parallelism which means that there is a repetation of ideas in the lyrics
It follows trochaic tetrameter
There usually is a lead singer and a choir, with the chor repeating everything the lead singer sings
There are often meaningless words repeated after every line (as in the alle-aa)

That type of singing was the main type of singing until the mid 19th century when it was replaced by a newer folk songs style which had the end rhyme and came from the nearby countries (aka was kinda similiar to the rest of Europe)

Easily the first one, that is quite epic.

The translation of the 1st one:

Curse upon iron.

Ohoy, villain! Wretched iron!
Wretched iron! Cursed bog ore!
You flesh-eater, Gnaver of bones!
You spiller of innocent blood!
Wicked, how did you get power?
Tell how you become so naughty!
Damn you, bastard! Wretched iron!
I know your birth, you purblind fool,
I know well your source, you evil!
Once there walked three nature spirits,
three fiery daughters of the sky.
They milked their swelling breasts to earth,
They squeezed their milk into the fens.
From the first maid spurted black milk,
this turned into soft wrought iron.
White milk squirted the second maid,
this was the source of tempered steel.
The third maid spouted blood-red milk,
This gave birth to bog iron ore.
I know your birth, you purblind fool,
I know well your source, you evil!
Then you were not high and mighty,
not yet mighty, not yet haughty,
when you moaned in the white-hot furnace,
Whined under baeting hammers.
Saliva was brought from a viper,
venom from a black snake!
For iron wouldn’t harbor evil
Without saliva from snakes.
Shelter us, supreme Creator!
Keep us safe, God Almighty!
So the mankind would not perish,
mother’s child vanish without trace.

2nd:

The Songster's Childhood

When I was very little,
alle-aa, alle-aa,
I grew so prettily,
I was but one night old,
just two days old,
mother took my cradle to the meadow,
put my crib on the heath,
put a duck to rock the cradle,
the bird of summer to push me.
The duck had many words,
the bird of summer had lots of songs,
the duck sang many songs to me there,
the bird of summer, it spoke to me a lot.
That is where this child learned the songs,
this crazy one [got to] know the words,
all of them I placed on paper,
all of them I hewed into a book.
That is why I have so many words,
that is why I have lots of tunes.
The fire said: "Be indifferent!"
The water said: "Go about angry!"
The stone said: "Be inflexible!"
The stump said: "Be heartless!"
How can I be indifferent, dear fire,
go about angry, dear water,
be inflexible, dear stone,
be heartless, dear stump -
I am not one of those indifferent daughters,
not one of the heartless women's chicks.
My mother was happy,
the woman who bore me was merry.

I'm strongly for the second song. I can't spot any order in "Raua needmine". It seems kinda... random.
And i love the spiritual character of the second one!

Well unfortunately i went with the 1st one, but i might send the 2nd one to nsc at some point in the future. And well... Raua Needmine is very chaotic, but i guess it is kinda supposed to be like that.

Re: Zombira

Rumours say that the next Zombiran entry will likely be a synth rock band from Finland.

Re: Zombira

Don't like it too much, tbh.

It's a bit tooo minimalistic/monotone for me.
