So this thread is only about songs released in 2016 or about songs we used to listen in 2016 regardless of how old they are? Anyway, I will only include 2016 songs.

I feel like this year I haven't listened to enough new music. I've been bad with listening to new album releases for sure. I can put together a nice enough list of songs though, and highlight a few albums I really loved. The list excludes Eurovision songs.

2017 should be a super hot year for me. I simply cannot wait. Seems like Dessa is releasing a new record, Mikal Cronin (
) has teased he's recording, Mac DeMarco has been in the studio, new Nicole Atkins album, That Poppy's debut, new The Orwells record, Sadistk, Doomtree (fingers crossed), Mutya Keisha Siobhan (might have to cross my toes as well as fingers for this one though), The Unthanks, Mount Eerie, Foxygen, Julie Byrne, highly likely a new Ariel Pink album... Kurt Vile releases a new album every couple of years sooo Linda Perhacs third album should finally release... and those are just the ones I can think of. Gosh, it's going to be crazy for me. Perhaps Soap&Skin would be so kind to release something as well? IT'S BEEN FIVE YEARS.

John Cale - M:Fans
A re-imagining of Cale's pièce de résistance from 1982, "Music For A New Society". On "M:Fans" John has reborn each song from the dark and uncomfortable album. Some being given almost schizo electronic makeovers, others stripped down to just piano. It's absolutely glorious. I didn't include any of the songs from this on my end of year songs list because I knew them all already and have loved them for years.
Sims - More Than Ever
I got into hip hop.. more than ever () this year and this hot release from my favourite Doomtree MC, Sims, was probably the most exciting release this year. I absolutely adore it. He wrote it at a pretty bad time when I believe his wife was unwell, and it shows in these songs. There is an urgency here that has you on edge. I may not have spammed "Brutal Dance" as much as some songs this year as it's a difficult song to listen to ("Beachwood Canyon" by Jem I actually played the most), but this Sims track slays me each time I listen to it. My surprise song of the year and probably album of the year as well if we exclude John Cale.

The Lemon Twigs - Do Hollywood
These two brothers from New York got signed to the iconic 4AD label this year and released this awesome slice of Todd Rundgren-esque psych rock.
Big Thief - Masterpiece
Debut album from another cool new band based in New York. Sometimes a little sludgy, sometimes achingly beautiful shoegaze balladry. "Paul" is probably the most beautiful ballad i've heard this year.
Elliott Smith - Heaven Adores You Soundtrack
Elliott Smith passed away back in 2003, and to this day, new songs and recordings keep trickling out. This is a collection of songs that serve as the soundtrack to the documentary "Heaven Adores You". The film itself left me with a strange feeling as it didn't go to areas that haunt every Elliott Smith fan, and instead focused on brighter stuff and was more of a celebration of his life. This soundtrack is absolutely stunning, featuring instrumental pieces Elliott recorded as a teenager, unreleased songs and alternate takes. The version of "The Last Hour" slices me in two.
