Vienna, the greenest city on earth 2020:
The world's greenest cities

The birthplace of modernism has a bounty of fresh ideas about mobility and public parks. But the commitment comes from a history of methodical city planning that has given the world everything from the English garden-inspired City Park (opened in 1862) to an actual national park just outside of town (Nationalpark Donau Auen). Vienna is also the European benchmark for public transit, with almost half of the city’s population holding an annual transit pass—and using it religiously.

I would really like to move to a different country in Europe when I am older, mostly because I would like to learn another language and I feel like the UK is quite distant from the other countries. These are the things I consider most important:

- A city with nice scenery, restaraunts, and decent housing (apartments/flats are ok)
- A country that treats LGBT people (and other minorities) well
- A country that treats poor people & the unemployed well
- tbh just somewhere liberal
- A country where the housing prices are not extremely expensive like the UK is (especially london)
- A country where they would not treat me different because I migrated there instead of being born in that country
- Somewhere that actually cares about Eurovision
- The ability to make friends easy and socialise with new people
- Decent universities that are also not too expensive to attend, I am thinking I want to be a psychologist or something like that

In terms of linguistic skills, I can speak some german and basic swedish? I like those countries but thought I would ask questions in case anyone knows somewhere nice.
Hello everyone! Great topic! Lots of people in this thread say that there is no such country to meet all the criteria and actually I agree with them. Partially :) I guess that the closest according to the criteria is Spain. I had been lving in Spain, Madrid, for 4 years until I moved to Australia in 2018. But I still miss it! Spanish education is considered to be 1 of the best in Europe. I guess that LGBT people also will have no problems after moving to Spain. Actually the Spanish are quite friendly to newcomers, that's for sure. Not sure about the housing prices in the UK but in Spain they are quite high, that 's true. The real estate is relatively expensive. If you plan to stay in the country permanently and are going to buy some apartment or house I would advise to think twice as some experts say (more info https://virtoproperty.com/info/covid19-spain-real-estate ) that local real estate market will recover fast after the virus outbreak.
P.S. If I had to move back to Spain I would go to Benidorm. I am sure this place can't be disliked :)

Good points about Palma. We also thought about moving there, but since we've always lived in a city, we now want more countryside, and also Mallorca is a bit small. Crete is currently top of the list. Plenty of space, and there is something about the place that we really like. I guess the mountains, open vistas and fresh air. Plus there is hardly any crime. We will probably move there at some point.

Once I visited Benidorm a couple years ago. A truly great place to live there :)

I am considering moving back to Europe within the next two years. It will have to be a country that has cheap cost of living and has a program that allows foreigners to settle.
Exploring where would be best to live with just over 1000 euro per month. I speak German, English and Spanish but would be happy to learn a Slavic or other language.
Portugal or Spain were my first choice but lately find myself drawn to Southern Balkan countries like Albania, Montenegro, North Macedonia or Bulgaria.
Would love to hear from anyone from these countries mentioned or other places that are good and affordable for retirees.

My requirements are a friendly, safe, clean neighbourhood, cosy 1 or 2 bedroom home, supermarket nearby, internet of 50Mbps minimum. Could be a small town too.
