Wales: Campaign Commences for Eurovision Participation

With a week to go until the Eurovision Song Contest 2024, a campaign has started to bring Wales to the Eurovision stage.

Record label Coco & Cwtsh has started a campaign to bring Wales to the Eurovision Song Contest. The record label has signed Sara Davies the winner of Can i Gymru (Song for Wales), who has released ‘Anfonaf Angel’ (I send an Angel) today.

The singer will perform a live premiere of the song on the night of the final of the Eurovision Song Contest 2024. Coco & Cwtsh Chief Executive, Ffion Gruffudd said:

“Coco & Cwtsh strongly believe that we as a nation have something special to offer this wonderful competition and that we shouldn’t be restricted from having a voice on this important stage because of broadcasting technicalities.”

“The aim is to build on this next year and maybe open it out into an actual competition where artists and musicians can enter their songs before deciding on what the Welsh entry would be and doing this year on year, along with an event, until we get to compete in the Eurovision as a nation in our own right.”

Wales would only be eligible to compete currently if the BBC opted not to compete in the contest on behalf of the United Kingdom. S4C currently holds full membership of the European Broadcasting Union through its parent organisation.

There's also an article posted by the Guardian:

Song for Wales winner inspires fresh bid to get country its own Eurovision place

Musicians, language campaigners and pro-independence politicians have backed a campaign to win a place for the land of song in Eurovision.

There is an increasingly loud chorus of music fans who believe that Wales, a country of heavenly choirs, anthem-belting sports crowds and rousing rock bands, should be given its own place in the song contest.

On Friday the campaign was given a focus with the release of a song called Anfonaf Angel (I Send An Angel) with a glitzy Eurovision-style video by the singer Sara Davies, who won this year’s Cân i Gymru (Song for Wales) competition, to draw attention to the fact that many Welsh people would like their homeland to have a chance to take part.

Davies said winning Cân i Gymru made her wonder afresh why her country did not have a place in Eurovision. “It really doesn’t make much sense to me that we’re not. This will hopefully drive the idea forward and get people talking about it.

I highly support them, tbh - I fail to see why it's perfectly fine for Wales to compete in UEFA/football but apparently, it's forbidden to let Wales/Scotland/England take part in Eurovision individually.

Since the participation fees are growing and Eurovision gets more expensive and countries are dropping out - I think it's time to re-think the rules and give Wales and Faroe Islands a chance (if they really want to take part) - obviously, the participation fees for the UK (England) must be slightly reduced but they would still be a Big 5 country probably.

I don't really see the need for this. I'm happy with a UK entry.

Northern Ireland would presumably get its own entry too then. Could be a minefield. Anyone who knows the situation with Northern Ireland soccer team over the years too will know what I mean

Won’t work whilst the BBC are broadcasting the contest - they represent the United Kingdom in its entirety

BBC can represent England (since their headquarters are in London anyway) and still broadcast the event, though :D

I know it will be quite complicated (televoting will say hello) but in theory, I don't see the harm in letting Wales compete (if they really want to). I mean, no one is pretending that Scotland and Wales can't take part in football competitions because technically "they aren't independent countries and there should be a UK football team".

It will probably not happen anyway since the EBU is quite stubborn on that issue but I think it's interesting to see that there's some sort of "momentum" and even Eurovision sites and British media report about it :D

They won’t agree to it (or at least any UK government wouldn’t let them agree to it) as it makes the soft case for independence

I fail to see how that's a valid argument, though?

I mean, I don't want the European football cup and think of - yeah, Wales and Scotland should move towards independence because I see these "countries" take part in it besides England, individually.

It always bother me how ESC has become such a tool to convert political ideas whereas Kazakhstan, Kosovo, Wales, Scotland and Faroe Islands can just play football with us and no one gives a 2 cents about it.

Maybe we just read too much into it?

I think it's just a beautiful opportunity to hear some Welsh language on an international stage - and Eurovision is struggling financially and if we lose more countries, we won't need two semi finals anymore.

It may be a shoddy argument but it’s a fact that any UK government would not accept it

It wouldn't be possible in ESC, unlike JESC and Eurovision Choir, as only sovereign nations can take part under ESC rules, and BBC holds the rights for the whole United Kingdom at present. It would be good if future UK National Finals (we haven't had once since 2019) could include entries from England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland, like a mini Eurovision for UK countries, and get all regions represented that way. In the 21st Century, Wales have only had Jessica, James Fox and Bonnie, and Scotland and Northern Ireland haven't been represented at all.
