The New Wave ("Novaya Volna") fest is the biggestex-Soviet international music festival which is hosted by Jurmala (Latvia).
The event is broadcasted live almost in all ex-USSR countries. You can watch it via satellitte as well on RTR-Planeta channel.
Usually every year at least 1 performer from the New Wave performs @ Eurovision.
I watch it every year with my family, we have such "tradition".
Last year Indonesia and Ukraine shared the 1st place because they scored the same amount of points (even the same marks if I'm not mistaken).

This fest is rich on connections with Eurovision.
Btw, it also has national finals. Every song should be less than 3 mins long.

such ESC performers like Dima Bilan, Tina Karol', almost all recent Latvian performers, Sopho (the 1st Georgian Sopho :) ), Nelly Ciobanu, Natalia Barbu performed on the New Wave as contestants.
In my opinion, sending NW performers on ESC works for everyone except Latvia itself

Date: July 27 - August 1 (usually it lasts for 5-6 days)

Rules: Every contestant has to perform 3 songs --> His/her/their national song (usually folk or national hit), world hit and their own song.
ONLY the jury gives marks but there's also the people's choice award which is based on voting.

Russia and Ukraine have a right to send 3 performers (we are the biggest ex-Soviet countries and the biggest sponsors), Latvia - 2 (as the host).

Every year all biggest celebrities and the most rich people visit Jurmala. For instance this year they expect Roman Abramovich :) and of course our own billionaire and "Shakhtar" FC owner Renat Akhmetov

This year we will have 17 contestants, also a lot of ESC-connected performers :p
Here they are:

^ this is the contest for newcomers, that's why it's so popular here :)
This is how Tina Karol' became famous, nobody heard of her before that fest.
She finished 2nd and on the next year she went @ ESC.
Latvia sends NW participants on ESC almost every year so it's really possible that we will see the next Latvian representative today.
As for Finland... I know that she's signed to one pomotional company which also sends their performers @ ESC NF, who knows.
I'll try to post YT videos here.

Non of contestants sang today. Competition starts tomorrow :)
I dunno what channel you're watching but the live broadcast finished an hour ago.

Did you like Kirkorov in a dress? :?

The only thing I liked today was .... Toni Braxton, but she performed just 2 songs.

btw, Bulgarian contestant proposed to our girl from ?????? ?????. She will eat him alive

Kirkorov was very kind to him (it appeared that they know each other) so I'm wondering if he composes ESC entry for Manolov.

How could I miss this part?! It was supposed to end at about 1 am. EET but at 1:30 it was still running and, of course, it was BNT who was broadcasting. We were mostly watching a funny Spanish sitcom on BTV. So we did watch only during the commercials and after it ended, though I got bored soon. I saw Ani Lorak, at least. Toni Braxton, too. There was a NF going on?!  Yeah, that's just a disgusting programme. I feel like vomitting when I find myself watching it even for a few seconds, by chance, of course. Everything' very communtis and old-fashioned about BNT. And all the programmes, hosts, etc. SUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUCKS!  Why couldn't BTV handle the Eurovision. :( So, if you've watched the whole thing, tell me what singers appeared on stage and what's the running order, after all...

Russia was pawned

as well as Milk & Kisses :( (though this song didn't fit them at all, imo)
lol @ Kazakh Michael Jackson )))

only Ukraine could top the list... and the bottom of the list  I do NOT think that ?????? ????? were the worst, imo they had to be in the middle. The main reason why they finished so low was demarche from Valeriya (Russian ESC NF 2009) who gave them 6 points out of 11 o___0 + it was probably the MOST sexually provoking performance in the NW history.
Btw, Sergey Lazarev was visibly shocked (in a bad way) when he's seen the juries' marks for them.

Tat'yana Shyrko (she's just 17 yo) will wake up as the new star in Ukraine tomorrow :D :D :D
She's working with the man who produced Tina Karol' and sent Tina Karol' on Eurovision :p
He was present @ the party in Kyiv on the final of Eurovision 2010 + his performer took part in the NF 2010 so I guess that he's interested in ESC. So I'm really wondering if we can expect Tanya Shyrko @ NF 2011 :)
I haven't heard about her before the New Wave, but, oh boy, she impressed me.

As for non-competition part --> Today's big (retro) star was Enhelbert Humperdinck ... I was really amazed. He's so old but his live voice was so clear and beautiful, well of course not exactly like in the past, but it was ... wow, I was impressed, and how he hold a mic sooooo far and still sang so powerful  my dad used to collect his records when he was young and Humperdinck is his MOST fave performer ever ... gorgeous present for him

Overall I expected more from performers comapring to the last year but on the other hand I discovered the new name and it was worth it.

btw, if Latvia sends 1 of those 2 bands @ ESC ... (come on! One of them sang ABBA  ) ... they will be royally screwed up in the semi again

ps. Something tells me that Kirkorov wants to team up with Manolov for ESC (for Bulgaria).

To me, it sounds (and looks) like something that Serbia would gladly send to the ESC

At some moments it reminded me of Milan Stankovic too, and it has trumpets and accordion and questionable sexuality, that's why I think RTS would be more than happy if they could send Kirokorov to the ESC
It's everything what RTS is looking for

RTR should think about it. I mean they show this channel in Israel but not in Bulgaria :|
Unfortunately you have to be tortured by Bulgarian broadcaster.

^ blah blah blah
Bulgarian chose the most laughable & boring song... You Raise Me Up

btw, for the 1st time I agree with places :) With few exceptions (imo, Finnish girl should have been higher and Estonian lower, Payushchiye Troosy 3-5 positions higher. I agree with the rest)

Today they will sing their national hits :D
