So after a very turbulent NF, An Dà Là emerged victorious! All three songs were in contention throughout, so it was exciting following the votes - thanks again to everyone who took the time to listen and vote

To celebrate, I'm sending something entirely different I found out about this group via a rather unusual route... All will be revealed come the LL; for now, I shall leave with the elusive "KK, OK?" I'm rubbish with these clues, so it'll either be totally impossible or guessed in five minutes...

WV117: Altered Images - I Could Be Happy

KK OK? Kristine Kochanski from Red Dwarf (long-running British space sitcom) was originally played by a Scottish actress called Clare Grogan who just happened to be a successful singer and the lead in Altered Images! I had not realised this at first, but was quite overjoyed to come across this delightful 80s piece. Hope you enjoy the discovery as much as I did

WV118: Maggie Reilly - Tears In The Rain

​

As warned, I have gone with Maggie Reilly - someone whom I knew better for her work with Mike Oldfield (Moonlight Shadow being the best known result of their collaboration). I came across then when hunting for other songs that she had done and was pleasantly surprised to find such a wonderful song! I hope you enjoy this discovery too

National Final planned for next edition btw. If you think Maggie Reilly is obscure... Oh boy

WV119 NF: Dave Goulder (I Like Trains)​

Well I did promise someone obscure for this... So, well, where to start? Well, my family has long been a fan of preserved steam railways and enjoying trips behind the old locomotives around the Dales and the North Yorkshire Moors - you may recall a couple of banners from my Yorkshire hosting including a few trains! So it's about time I actually sent some songs connected to this passion of mine! Dave Goulder is, I think, the musician I have known of for longer than almost any other. We certainly listened to his music in the car when I was very young! He is not Scottish by origin, but has lived here for some time in the far North. He has written songs about all sorts of bizarre subjects, but I am focussing solely on his train-related output Without further ado... the songs!!

As we only have four songs, I am giving you four numbers from 6-5-4-3-2-1-0 to vote (no repeats!). Deadline tbd (as usual, will most likely be the day before the submission deadline). Thanks for listening and hope you enjoy! If you're baffled by some of the songs, then see below for a little bit of backstory...

1. Ais Gill

This song describes the Hawes Junction crash (yes, THAT'S how it's spelt - no "Whores' Junction" here alas!). The song kinda describes what happened, so not a lot I can add, save that this happened in the middle of nowhere on the edge of the Yorkshire Dales and makes the middle of nowhere seem like it's in the centre of London

2. Last Train

The 1960s saw colossal changes to the British railway network - both in terms of how it was operated and the size of it! Huge numbers of lines were closed as they were deemed unprofitable and there was a complete abandonment of steam locomotives in favour of diesel and electric. This song is from the perspective of a former railway worker reminiscing about his days on the lines and what has now happened to the railway he worked. It's very sad and full of regret. It should be noted that a number of these cuts are now considered mistakes and efforts are being made to reverse them! The location mentions are mostly to the north and east of Manchester in the hills, so between my homeland and my university city.

3. Eight Freight Blues

A complete mood change from the previous song! The "Eight Freight" refers to the "8F" locomotives which were widespread in the 1940s-1960s on freight services. This time we hear a fireman's account of a late night turn on goods run. I cannot even try to explain all of the jargon referenced in this song, but I'll try a few! For example, "a blow" in this case refers to a blowdown of water and condensate from the boiler and is NOT sexual (probably!). A banker was a secondary locomotive used to provide additional power when climbing steep hills with a heavy train.

4. Requiem

Steam power officially came to an end in August 1968 and this song commemorates the farewell of the form of propulsion that had driven the railways for over a century. It mourns the loss of all that went with the steam age - from the glory of watching a high speed express pound across the countryside to the, well, slightly less epic side of the muck and grime that went with it! "For some are away to be mounted and stuffed" refers to those selected for preservation - initially anticipated to just be sitting in a museum forevermore, although fortunately now we can see locomotives across the country thanks to the preserved railways of which I spoke at the start! The Scotsman is the Flying Scotsman - now owned by the nation - and the Mallard is the fastest steam locomotive in history!

WV119: Dave Goulder "Eight Freight Blues"

​

So a few days late... Or maybe a week, I dunno, it's been a busy time!! Apologies all for the tardiness with which this is coming - all none of you that come by my Greenroom outside of NFs anyway Yes, so Eight Freight Blues won the NF by 3 points, which was a slight surprise in truth! But I am very touched by the fact that people took it to heart and SOMEHOW saw it through to the final!! Very chuffed by that indeed - and rather flabbergasted as well! Hope you continue to enjoy this account of life on the footplate in the final

Also, a quick note, I will be taking a break next edition - I need a bit of time to recharge batteries with a busy few weekends ahead, but will be back in WV121
