Re: PORTUGAL - Portugal 2010

The first stage of the Portuguese selection process saw RTP receive a total of 420 songs. This means a slight increase compared to last year when 393 songs were submitted.

The songs will be placed online to eliminate 6, but only 1:30 of each song will go up, which is kinda stupid IMO.

Re: PORTUGAL - Portugal 2010

Looks like the two top songs in the amount of votes at moment are my favorites:

"Luta assim não dá" is so fun and happy! I love it!

"Canta por mim" sounds almost a bit balkan in the music (no surprise I know) but it still has something portuguese in it! A cool song that also could do well in ESC (if it is in English, otherwise it has 0 chances..) :D

NO NO NO!!

Is English the language of Portugal? Nope!

Don't destroy Eurovision with all this English! Too much English already!! It's destroying the soul and concept of this contest.

Do we want EUROvision or ANGLOvision (American Idol!?)

Eurovision is about embracing what's unique with European countries; the different languages, cultures etc.

I think we should encourage selections like the Portuguese one, that doesn't turn away from their own language, like in so many others.

If I want to hear English, I can turn on the radio or MTV any day. We should embrace the beauty and uniqueness of the Eurovision languages. Music is universal.

Re: PORTUGAL - Portugal 2010

it seems that Catarina has more chances now because "Luta assim não dá" has been released before October 1st.

My favourite is "Meu Coração Não É Meu" by Nina Pinto. I'm not a big fan of the two favourites that are leading right now.

Catarina's song is excellent! A positive surprise. I disliked last year's entry, but this year it might turn out to be as good as "Danca conmigo". :) Looking forward for the full song!

Well of course it would be fun if they would sing in Portuguese..but if they should have a big chance with a song like that in ESC, then it should be at least 50/50 in English because of various reasons:

Not many people understand Portuguese. If you compare in 2008 there Qele Qele (with had mostly English) and "Vrag Naj Vzame (no english at all) competed in the same semi, you could easily see that the English song had a bigger advantage (then also we have to think that Armenia had a much better preformance and song in my opinion, but still Rebeka for Slovenia had a lot better voice than Sirusho...).

I also think that people that is voting would like to understand the meaning of the songs. If you hear "Canta Por Mim" for the first time, without even knowing what the song title means, it is very hard to get what it means.

Looking through history, the UK and Ireland has together won 12 times and being 2nd trillions times, all songs on English. Don't forget that Sweden has won twice in English and Netherlands won in 75. Only two songs among the 00s winners, Ukraine 04 and Serbia 07, have been only partly or non-english songs. In the 2009 results, the best non-english songs were:
Estonia (ballad)
France (ballad)
Armenia (a very different kind of song + a little diaspora)
Russia (homecountry + ballad)

Ballads do better if they are sung in the native language I think!

Of course it's not impossible for Portugal to not do well with this song in portuguese, but I really want to have them top 10 now, so for that case I could see them sing in English or why not 50/50, which could also work well in this song! :)
