Re: PERÚ WV 79 | El Cóndor Pasa

WV 79

Daniel Alomía Robles - El Cóndor Pasa

El Cóndor Pasa ("The Condor Passes") is an orchestral musical piece from the zarzuela El Cóndor Pasa by the Peruvian composer Daniel Alomía Robles, written in 1913 and based on traditional Andean music, specifically folk music from Peru.

Since then, it has been estimated that around the world, more than 4000 versions of the melody have been produced, along with 300 sets of lyrics. In 2004, Peru declared this song as part of the national cultural heritage. This song is now considered the second national anthem of Peru.

There are two marked parts in this piece, the first one symbolises injustice and expresses sadness that indigenous people suffered during their time as slaves, but the melody suddenly turns cheerful and happy representing the people's liberation. In the Inca culture, the condor is liberty, majestuosity, power and life, this is why the song was titled The Condor Passes.

A bit surprising from you, I expected some traditional oriental stuff again. Good luck with this song, I enjoyed it!

ANTOLOGIA - HOY ME IRE

This is my last entry for Peru this year, as I'm going to switch to my second home Finland next edition!

Lyrics

Mi pobre corazón
Que tuyo fue
Hoy ya no es más
Mucho lo hiciste sufrir
No quiere saber
Ni un poquito de ti.

Si culpable soy yo
Me enamoré
Sin comprender
Ciego de pasión no vi
Escondí a tu piel
El amargo desdén...

Hoy me iré me alejare
Y nunca más volveré
Mi corazón esta herido
No quiere saber
Ni un poquito de ti
Hoy me iré me alejaré
Y nunca más volveré
Mi corazón esta herido
No quiere saber
Ni un poquito de ti.

Mi pobre corazón
Que tuyo fue
Hoy ya no es más
Mucho lo hiciste sufrir
No quiere saber
Ni un poquito de ti.

Hoy me iré me alejare
Y nunca más volveré
Mi corazón esta herido
No quiere saber
Ni un poquito de ti.

Hoy me iré me alejare
Y nunca más volveré
Hoy me iré me alejare
Y nunca más volveré
Mi corazón esta herido
No quiere saber
Ni un poquito de ti
Ni un poquito de ti
Ni un poquito de ti

Your ache is my ache
Your eyes are my eyes

Oh, what pain

You believe that I'm seeing you,

Who will believe you that I'm here
I am crying
If I die you will miss me,
but you don't want it to happen

Re: Peru WV 113 - Juan Diego Flórez - Cucurrucucú Paloma

Juan Diego Flórez - Cucurrucucú Paloma

Cucurrucú Paloma (Spanish for Coo-coo dove) is a Mexican popular song written in 1954.The title is an onomatopeic reference to the characteristic call of the mourning dove, which is evoked in the refrain. The lyrics allude to lovesickness. Over the years the song has been used in the soundtrack of several films such as Almodóvar’s Talk to her and Academy Award winner Moonlight, among others.

Juan Diego Flórez is a Peruvian operatic tenor, particularly known for his roles in bel canto operas. He came late to classical music, preferring instead pop and Elvis Presley. Following appearances at La Scala and Covent Garden, he was anointed by Pavarotti himself as the singer who could replace him. After a few years, Flórez proved the world he is his own.

Lyrics in English

They say through every nighttime
he was purely a flowing river of tears;
they say he wasn’t eating,
but drinking to drown out the pain that so sears.
They swear that even the night skies
shudder with pity to his sad wails and sharp cries,
for her, oh he was suffering,
and vainly calls out past the death where she now lies.

Ay, ay, ay, ay, ay he’s singing,
ay, ay, ay, ay, ay he’s moaning.
Ay, ay, ay, ay, ay, he’s singing,
and from mortal passion dying.

A Mourning Dove sad and lonesome
at dawn its song will be cooed for your ears,
the cottage still is waiting
with wide open doors emptying fears.
They swear that Mourning Dove cooing
is surely the very soul of your darling,
that is still so sweetly awaiting
her return to his love never-ending.

Cucurrucucú paloma,
cucurrucucú no crying.
The stones we walk on, paloma,
will never know about our loving.

Cucurrucucú, cucurrucucú,
cucurrucucú, paloma, don’t cry.

Tania Libertad - Concierto para una sola voz

Tania Libertad is one of the most prolific and international Peruvian artist in the scene. She has performed Concierto para una sola voz from the beginning of her career but only recorded it then in 1982.
It’s a cover of 1969 hit Concerto pour une Voix written by French composer Saint-Preux at the age of 19.

Originally, the piece was written for a solo trumpet, however after being introduced to Danielle Licari, the writer agreed to arrange it for a vocalised version with no lyrics, similar to scat singing in jazz. Ever since the song has been covered multiple times by many singers around the world, including Dalida.
Tania Libertad’s Spanish version has lyrics and a different arrangement but keeps intact the spirit of this masterpiece.

Enjoy!

Elleen Burhum - Almas Gemelas

“Motherhood is the experience that has most enriched my life.
I remember when I walked with my little baby in my arms, his whole body shuddered when he contemplated nature, a flower, the rolling of the waves, the flapping of the birds or when we discovered the first star that illuminated our sky. He still did not know how to say a word, however, the language of love said it all”

CHASKA - Nymph of the Lake

LYRICS

Near to the clouds,
A lake keeps a spirit that nobody feels.
Lake from the high plains, fallen tears.
There's a nymph that anybody feels.
An old man. He lives alone. A rural life.
Mortal man who walks lonely through the fields,
Under the sun and the shining moon.
He's waiting for someone who'll never come.
But the dark storm breaks the night.
The lake awakes and its water shakes.
The lady dances and spins in the eye of the storm, calling for him.
She sneaks into his dreams.
Late into the night, he heard her calling.
His soul flew and he went for her.
...And the dark storm broke the night.
The lake awoke and its water shook.
The lady danced and played in the eye of the storm.
He'll never return. They went far away.
