Meet the Artists

Tanya Tagaq

Tanya Tagaq (born May 5, 1975) is a Canadian (Inuk) throat singer from Cambridge Bay (Iqaluktuutiaq), Nunavut, Canada, on the south coast of Victoria Island.

After attending school in Cambridge Bay, at age 15, Tagaq went to Yellowknife, Northwest Territories to attend high school where she first began to practice throat singing. She later studied visual arts at the Nova Scotia College of Art and Design and while there developed her own solo form of Inuit throat singing, which is normally done by two women.

With Animism, released in May of 2014, Tagaq grazed the mainstream more so than ever before. And as the winner of the 2014 Polaris Music Prize (the best Canadian album of the year, based solely on artistic merit, regardless of sales or genre) -- for which she beat Arcade Fire, Mac DeMarco and Drake -- the album has ushered her to the forefront of the Canadian indie scene.

One thing that is far different from Mongolian or other forms of throat singing is that in Inuit culture, women are the only throat singers. Back in more tribal times, the women would throat sing with each other as a competition within the community, while men went out and hunted and fished. Inuk throat singing is typically done with two women, but Tagaq has trained her voice to harmonize the sound of two women into one.

Since the release of their debut album, they have toured Canada, the United States, Europe, and Australia, and played numerous festivals. The band’s highly anticipated sophomore album, Touch, was released on 9 September 2016 by Sleepless Records in Canada, Island Records in the United States and Universal Music Group/Vertigo Records in Europe. "Push + Pull", the album’s first single, held the #1 spot on the Canadian Alternative Radio charts for more than twelve weeks in the summer of 2016 and was released on American Alternative Radio in September 2016.

We are the Halluci Nation
Our DNA is of earth and sky
Our DNA is of past and present

We have been called the Indians

We have been called hostile
We have been called pagan
