Moi moi!
In this thread you may post your overall impression of this edition, and you may rank your favourites or unbearables.
The Helsinki-misery was a turbulent set of songs. When I hear them over again, I feel as if many composing teams had desperately added any rock element just because of Lordi's success the year before. And it's like that desperation stole much effort from finding original compositions and interesting structures. Mostly, I just hear fizzing, soulless rock-engines at the expense of the ESC-spirit. I mean, when Norway send something in spanish, the circles are clearly disturbed...
Luckily, we got Molitva and a deserving winner, so at least there were something positive to remember. Molitva had the stylistically pure package, an intense crimson backdrop and singers that were properly dressed. When the other countries tried to mimic, Serbia struck with the best singer and the best song.
My favourites:
1. - Marija Šerifovic - Molitva
Dead serious, she opened her heart and it was hard not to get affected. However, Molitva is not my absolute all-time favourite. Still superior this year.
2. - Dervish - They Can't Stop The Spring
Undeservedly ignored. She is a great singer with a slight unusual voice. The refrain is brisk and refreshing towards the end and, as often, I'm weak for celticity. Actually, I also think the lyrics are pleasantly poetic. And they might scare the blackbird, but they cannot stop him sing.
3. - Les Fatals Picards - L'amour à La Française
To judge from forum posts, this seems to be everyone's guilty pleasure from Helsinki. Mine too. The seemingly arbitrary code-switching - the Franglais - works really good, and the pace with which he gasps the phrases out, is also exciting.
4. - Sabrina - Dança Comigo
Rather weak, but it's an earnest attempt with emotions brewing in the wind.
5. - Hanna Pakarinen - Leave Me Alone
I actually voted for this back then. However, my taste in music have taken giant leaps and I can't admit that I still consider this very interesting. But for the sake of a good memory, it earns a place on my list.
And my gutter squad:
42. - Teapacks - Push The Button - Buffoons.
41. - Verka Serduchka - Dancing Lasha Tumbai - Nerve-racking rubbish.
40. - Kenan Doğulu - Shake It Up şekerim - I don't want your candy.
39. - The Ark - The Worrying Kind - Even worse than Martin Stenmarck...
Overall, a weak and soulless year!
