Actually I am one of a few that didn't like Lena much that year. I thought her song in 2011 was much better and progressive.
in 2010, my faves were actually:

maNga - We Could Be The Same (Turkey)
Alyosha - Sweet People (Ukraine)
Vukašin Brajić - Thunder And Lightning (Bosnia & Herzegovina).

These are songs that kept my heart and still do.

I was never a big fan of :tr: 2010. The only funny thing is the huge amount of butthurt Turks in the Youtube comments after almost eleven years.

I love "Deli" and I'm still sad I wasn't able to include it as part of my Top 10 (2008 was such a strong year!).

Turkey 2010,however, has always come across as kinda generic to me. It's a solid entry but I wasn't able to connect to it. It reminded me a bit of Linkin' Park (which I do not like) with some cheesy lyrics and a bit of a catchy and oriental hook.

@ESC94 the Turkish comments (and probably dislikes) are disrespectful. Being #2 out of 39 participants is such a huge achievement (and if you ask me... Totally overrated for that song). Instead of being happy and proud of getting such a great result, they try to take something away from Lena's victory.... Even after 10 years.. Don't they have something better to do?

I hate it when ESC countries have such a mentality. I mean, Turkey just said that "they have tried everything to win but didn't manage to do so" is the reason they stopped participating back in 2012/13... I miss Turkey in Eurovision because of the artists but the broadcaster's attitude is just horrible and annoying.
I hate it when country's have that ego.. That it is necessary to win every 5 years (or otherwise the contest has been rigged). You know, other countries might be able to sing and submit a great track as well.

"Taken By A Stranger" was such a triumphant way for a "comeback".

I'm glad you love Alyosha as well. It's such an underrated entry amongst the fanbase. I love how the lyrics reflect on society and her vocal performance that night was absolutely stunning!

@mauve

To be honest I didn´t really like most of their entries since 2000, my personal favourite is Sebnem Parker and "Dinle" from 1997.
This was indeed a very good song as well! Her voice was on top and I also liked the performance too.

I do like Turkey 2010 and was impressed something I liked that much even came 2nd but I have actually mellowed on Lena with age being as, at the risk of sounding shallow I do at least find her attractive! Possibly 1997 was a bit better for Turkish language if I did have to choose though, yeah!

:de: Düsseldorf, Düsseldorf 2011

After Lena's victory, I've become even a more massive fan than before. It was such an exciting time to get to know all the Eurovision-related articles in the press as well as the "race of the potential host cities". I never did expect Düsseldorf to actually get the right to host the biggest music event! - I was able to attend the contest even though I had to spent 5 hours to get tickets for the final (because all servers broke down several times) and I was able to get one of the last tickets... that was such a nerve-wrecking experience! - That was also the time when I found that that something like fanclubs does exist and I applied for being part of one of the German fanclubs (which helped me a lot getting tickets for Eurovision 2012-2015). It was such a great experience to be able to attend all three live shows, to meet artists like Jedward, A Friend in London and Dana International at the airport or other artists in Düsseldorf's old town/Euroclub. I even met Lena, got my magazines signed and a lovely picture with her (and ended up being on national TV (Pro7) haha)

Apart from living the time of my life, I think that the songs weren't that good like in previous years - but the staging was so impressive and the hosts were so entertaining + it was my first live experience that the 2011 edition will always have a special place in my heart.

Actually, it was very difficult to come up with a ranking because apart from my Top 5, some songs are quite interchangeable and I tried to keep on focussing on the studio versions (e.g. France was one of my favourites but the live performance was such a letdown - same applies to UK or Hungary). - Lena turned me into a fan that year. "Taken By A Stranger" is so iconic (it should have won again, tbh) but I am glad I had the opportunity to discover Azerbaijan that way, for sure!

I will have to confess that I did boo at Belarus in the semi due to it being like a propaganda song. Tbh, I was influenced by my friends back at that time. I was young, still went to school and to me, it was such a low move to sing a song about loving a dictatorship and as a non-patriotic person.. I think this was so wrong... HOWEVER, I wish it didn't happen (I didn't boo at Russia back in 2014 or 2015 as part of the audience because I learnt to understand that artist =/= country they represent + I grew older and more mature). Ironically, I absolutely love "I Love Belarus" now - It got the most iconic entry in 2011, it's a trashy bop, I love the ethnic vibes to it, it#s so energetic and powerful. I wish I could step back in time and cheer for it.

When only one spot was left (and Sweden was still missing). I was hoping for :israel: to make it. "Ding Dong" is another trashy bop which I absolutely love! :D - And :it: What a comeback! - Such a beautiful and high quality entry!
Also, it was lovely to see Switzerland and Austria (being back, in general as well as) being back int he final!

:az: Baku, Azerbaijan 2012

Music-wise, 2012 was a huge improvement to 2011 and "Euphoria" is my favourite Eurovision entry ever. It was contemporary yet pushing that "Guetta sound" to new boundaries by making it more dramatic. I've got so many curious that year! A pity, I wasn't able to give any points to :me: , :nl:, :ba: (pls come back!), :es: and many more...
That said, I will never forgive :ua: for not sending Max Barskih! :uk: might have been dire on stage but the song itself is a beautiful and touching piece of art. Actually, I think it has become one of my most listened entries from that edition (due to me having placed the song into my "oldies" Playlist).

A pity Queen Marinova didn't qualify. She deserved it. Bulgaria deserved it. Tooji wasn't bad either but "Love Unlimited" was way more distinctive and iconic. I still can't believe there was a tie! the EBU should introduce a new rule that if #10 and #11 have the same amount of points, both countries should qualify...

Azerbaijani people were really hospitable and I loved my stay there! Baku has become one of my favourite cities due to its mesmerising old town as well as its boulevard and I was impressed at how "modern" the city and people seem to be. This journey made me come back to the whole Caucasus region a few years later (2017) to discover more of these beautiful countries.

Btw. :az: got the best host entry ever. A pity the Mugham part isn't more recognizable in the studio version, though. It seems that :az: is pulling off a Michal Szpak/Poland 2016 on my scoreboard :D

+ Can you imagine :de: being part of the Top 10 three times in a row! In the 2010's! As a Big 5 country! Oo

:se: Malmö, Sweden 2013

After the juries doing an excellent job in 2012 (saving Spain and Italy), I can still not forgive them for letting a #4 in televoting not qualify! "Igranka" was the most contemporary sounding song and they just killed it! - It's crazy to believe that they gave so many points to Hungary and Armenia in 2014 (both used Dubstep as well)...2013 marks the year when I started to question the juries... they seem to enjoy cliché and dated ballads instead of original ideas.. which is a pity because they had been explicitly told to look for originality as well (and yet, they still didn't make "Igranka" or "Telemoveis" qualify!)

:it: is my #1 by miles. I'm still a huge fan of Marco Mengoni's. His concert in November 2019 was actually one of my last ones to attend to before Covid-19 happened... "L'essenziale" is a masterpiece! - It was difficult to rank "Only Teardrops" because it was so instant and catchy that after a few spins, I was getting so tired of that song but it has been growing on me over the years. I mean, it's very formulaic and ticks all boxes to make a perfect Eurovision song yet I think that 2013 had a few songs which were more interesting.

I was really proud of Cascada representing us. Unfortunately, the performance didn't fit her personality at all and the shorted version didn't do the song justice. It's rather basic but I love its uplifting attitude and honestly, Germany never submits fun/uptempo songs with a modern arrangement. Thus, it was a huge surprise!

Other entries I loved that year: :ua:, :fr:, :mk:, :ge: , :mt: , :lt:

Poland came back with a bang. Unfortunately, the juries robbed it. It deserved to be Top 5 (it's one of the most memorable performances of the last decade!). It's crazy to think that juries had the power to make a country give :0: to their televoters's favourite song. I am glad there's a new system around nowadays!

In general, I think that 2014 was slightly weaker than 2013 but still a very entertaining year. The stage is my favourite one of the last decade (simply love the design) and I was very happy to see Austria win after such a long time.

Other entries I loved that year:  & :mt:

:12: :pl: Donatan & Cleo - My Słowianie - We Are Slavic

Well, there´s a lot to write about. ;)

2011: Well, with a few years distance this was a very mediocre year songwise, I personally hate "Running Scared" with a burning passion. This was also the year of the "crashed fan favourites". So many songs were hyped before the contest and viewed as a potential winner like :fr:, :uk:, :hu: and :ee:, and all of them performed far worse than expected. My personal favourite this year was "Taken by a Stranger", but Maja Keuc and "No One" were closely behind.

2012: A better year songwise, with an ok song from :de:. But my personal favourite from this edition will always be "Kuula" by Ott Lepland, I still love it as much as in 2012, even though Nina Zili from :it: and Pastora Soler from :es: were also real queens for me. xheart

Loreen and "Euphoria" were also alright, but for some reason this song faded rather quickly for me. xthink

2013: For me the weakest year songwise in the last decade. Most of the songs were boring average in my opinon, and I´m really sorry for disagreeing with you once more, but I still don´t get the love for "Igranka". xshrug

Marco from :it: was really great and would have been a worthy winner as well, but my personal queen was Margaret from , this was just electrifying!! I also enjoyed Anouk from :nl:, but you can´t listen to "Birds" all that often in my opinion.

Back in 2013 I kinda liked "Only Teardrops" from :dk:, but like the year before the song faded really quickly, even more than "Euphoria" , it´s rather dull and repetitive and I really doubt that the song would have won in stronger years like 2012, 2014 or 2015.

Cascadas song was ok, nothing groundbreaking but quite solid. The 21st place was a bit harsh, even though the performance was rather underwhelming and Natalie not as self confident on stage as usual.

2014: A really interesting year songwise with many different styles. Even though I agree with you that the juries were too harsh on :pl: the song itself is still just ok for me. I kinda like it, but nothing more.

And could someone tell me why :am: was such a big favourite before the contest?? For me "Not Alone" was just boring average, and the dubstep part at the end didn´t fit to the rest of the song for me. The unlikable presence of him didn´t help either.

That year :at: won for the first time after 48 years. I was really happy for them and for Conchita as well after all the homophobic bullshit before. I liked the song as well, even though I´m usually not that into these Bond style ballads.

My personal favourite though were :nl: and "Calm After the Storm". If there´s an example for a magic moment when you just sit silent in front of the TV because you´re soo impressed than it´s this one. It was my parents favourite as well and I was happy when :de: gave :12:. You can still hear the song on the radio here, which rarely happens with other ESC songs. xheartxheat

Elaiza were ok, even though I´m still not sure whether I like "Is It Right" or not. They did their best, but performing between :at: and :se: didn´t help.

Otherwise I really liked the emotional "Silent Storm" from  , "La mia citta" from :it: and "Dancing in the Rain" from :es: the most.

On the other end of the scoreboard :fr: finished last for the first time, rightfully deserved in my opinion. I wasn´t a big fan of "Moustache" before the contest, but the performance in the final was like watching a car crash on a highway. You shouldn´t look but you have to because it was soo bad. xrofl

@mauve I am glad we share many favourites again!

Actually, I do like "Crno I Belo" as well - it would have been part of my Top 10 in 2011, for sure, but in general, I think that 2012 was too competitive. Same applies to "Nije Ljubav Stvar" - I like going back to that song but I think that his other Eurovision entries (he performed/composed) were more striking/memorable. I would like to see him coming up with an entry for a Balkan entry again, tbh.

@ESC94

What a long reply! Really appreciate it! - I'm glad we agree on many cases (I think we share quite a lot entries). Yeah, due to mediocre performances, the fan favourites somehow (rightfully) crashed back in 2011.

"Kuula" is a great song but the performance lift it up. It was vocally impressive and I loved it that he altered it a bit. Pastora Soler was my #11 - Another stunning performance but overall, I prefer Spain submitting bangers (they usually have a certain type of ballads which reminds me of Disney xD) - Nina Zilli is such a great artist! I even bought two of her albums - I wish she would come back with some strong material again! Miss her voice!

Wow - didn't expect anyone to call 2013 weak - "Igranka" was just right at that time - progressive, innovative and pushing the boundaries of the -back-then-contemporary Dubestep sound... Armenia 2014 sounded more like a very theatrical "Dubstep accident" (I also enjoyed that track but it sounds way less organic and authentic). I agree with you on "Birds" - A masterpiece but you can't always go back listening to it since it's demanding a full experience from the listener. I am glad and deliriously happy that such a huge artist (of such calibre) did want to represent the Netherlands.. I mean, without Anouk we would have never got the Common Linnets, Duncan and so on.. She made the whole contest more interesting to the Dutch viewers and artists again showing/proving that it's possible to slay in Eurovision IF you submit a quality entry!

A pity, the winning entries of 2012 and 2013 did grow off of you. - Yeah, Cascada wasn't that confident that day (probably because she's used to being a "Rampensau" wearing comfortable outfits... her being on that staircase wearing haute couture didn't feel right at all.

I'm glad you agree with me saying that the juries shouldn't have the power to completely neglect a televoters' favourite. One doesn't have to like or love Igranka or My Slowanie but placing such entries so low that they didn't get a single point in the end is ridiculous. I am glad they changed the whole system.

Same here, Bond style ballads are very listenable but I usually do not love them ;)

I didn't like Elaiza either - I was so mad at them winning (I attended the national final). I can't believe we had Unheilig and Santiano wanting to represent us and in the end, we ended up with them. Not our worst entry but it was the beginning of Germany's downfall again (as well as well-established artists losing interestes in ESC again).

:at: Vienna, Austria 2015

Despite a few ridiciously embarrassing choices such as San Marino, Switzerland, UK, Moldova, I think that this year was quite a good one! Even though the songs were my cup of tea, my love for attending Eurovision live ended with this edition. Coming up with a standing area might be more lucrative for the organizers but it's honestly a nightmare for enjoying the show. You basically have all fans (most of them being hardcore fans, gay, middle aged men) gathered together and they simply don't shut up. I wasn't even able to listen to what the hosts said because they continued chatting, talking...some were totally drunk (I don't think it's sinful or anything but why don't you wait until the "after show party"?) - Many were on their phones (going through Facebook, Grindr, What's App).. I think that due to them knowing all songs, having heard them several times before (rehearsals, semi finals, Eurovision events in their home countries, Eurovision parties, national finals), they simply do not care. Apart from their own favourites, they were utterly disrespectful to the audience, the artists, the hosts, the whole contest. Thus, I decided to cancel my OGAE membership and stop attending Eurovision live anymore. What's the point of attending a live event when you aren't even able to hear most of the artists?

Apart from that, I really enjoyed :al: and :it: the most. Unfortunately, Elhaida was sick and couldn't deliver an exceptionally impressive vocal performance (which she is indeed very much capable of).

2015 is another year which proves that having juries doesn't always equal quality. I still can't believe that they prevented Italy from their deserved win as well as preventing Czech Republic (great comeback!) from qualifying.

I still adore the Dutch entry - it's such a laid-back 90's throwback radio pop song with a very catchy hook (slightly repetitive but the verses are stunning!) - A pity, she turned a very uplifting sounding song into such a dire performance :(

:au: as a participating country is totally fine with me due to Australia's demographics and their sense of identity (seeing European countries as their origin [80% of Australia's population]) as well as them stanning for the contest for decades. I think it's fine to let them participate as an exception to the rule. Thus, I was really happy to find out that Guy Sebastian was their debut entrant. I've liked a couple of songs by him before and "Tonight Again" is really a feel good anthem.

It's a pity I was not able to include :be: - It's a hell of a song but Loic's voice is a bit irritating at times. Still a 9/10 for me that year!
Other entries I enjoyed as well include: :ge:, :lt:, :am:, :pl:, :il:, :sl:, :ro: and :ie:

:12: :al: Elhaida Dani - I'm Alive
:10: :it: Il Volo - Grande Amore
:8: :me: Knez - Adio
:7:  Mørland & Debrah Scarlett - A Monster Like Me
:6: :az: Elnur Huseynov - Hour Of The Wolf
:5: :lv: Aminata - Love Injected
:4: :nl: Trijntje Oosterhuis - Walk Along
:3: :ee: Elina Born & Stig Rästa - Goodbye To Yesterday
:2: :au: Guy Sebastian - Tonight Again
:1: :cz: Marta Jandová & Vaclav Noid Barta - Hope Never Dies

Well, 2015 is probably the ESC edition I´m most conflicted about. On one side there were really great songs that I still enjoy listening to, but on the other side there´s a top 3 where my reactions were something like this:

Sweden - Meh!!
Russia - Please no!! :censored:
Italy - Yuck!!

During the voting I started cheering for :se:, but only because "Heroes" was the least of three evils for me. The song itself is a pretty average dance-house track with too many similarities to "Lovers on the Sun" by David Guetta and relied too much on the admittedly stunning graphics.

While I´m usually a huge fan of :it:, "Grande Amore" was just soo cheesy and over the top that I felt like having too much Tiramisu after listening to this song. I´m simply not a fan of Popera!! (n)

Well, we all know what happened to :de: that year and while I think that :0: were a bit too harsh I was´t surprised that "Black Smoke" flopped really hard. The song is just an ok radio song and got buried and forgotten among the many slow songs that evening, her cold appearance didn´t help either. :(

But after all the complainings now to something positive again. The contest in Vienna brought some songs to me that I still like, among them is my personal favourite of 2015, "Goodbye to Yesterday" from :ee:. This was just so tasteful classy and I can still remember the hateful look in Elinas face, worthy an Academy Award!! xclap

Otherwise my Top 5 included :lv: that came back with a real bop sung by the stunning Aminata, with the second great duet that evening and a very beautiful melancholic ballad, :be: with the most modern song and a very interesting voice
and last but not least :au: that convinced me with a really catchy tune performed by a very charismatic performer!! I still listen to these five songs very often, so alone for that 2015 was a good contest musically!! xmusicxheart

Funny comparison regarding "Grande Amore" - I think it's more dramatic and beautiful (than cheesy) but I can see where you are coming from. I listen to some classical music as well as opera voices and since Italian is one of my favourite languages (in terms of music), I couldn't resist. I would have loved to see another non-English entry and Big 5 country win (to make haters shut up) but on the other hand, Sweden did a great job when it comes to hosting the contest.

I think that finishing last for Germany was about right. I hear that quite often that "finishing so low for Germany is way too harsh" but at the same time, most people agree that our entries were (below) average. I just hope that we will come up with more distinctive entries from now on... but we will see :D

Your last paragraph is lovely. It seems that apart from my very Top, we share many favourites that year ;)
