WV 100: Ennio Morricone - L' Arena
For WV 100 I chose the legendary movie music mastermind Ennio Morricone who is gonna have his 90th birthday in two weeks
Since the biggest part of his soundtracks where created for spaghetti westerns he didnt get much recognition by the Oscar acadamy for a long time until 2006, when he won a Honorary Award "in recognition of his magnificent and multifaceted contributions to the art of film music". 10 years later, in the age of 87, he finally and deservedly won his first regular oscar for his The Hateful Eight soundtrack.
"L' Arena" was originally created for the western movie "Il mercenario" . It is featured in a typical Mexican standoff scene
at the end.. However, to be honest, Ive never watched this movie and I dont even know why there is a clown in that scene. I actually dont watch western movies, only care about the music.
More prominently ,"L' Arena" was used in Tarantino's masterpiece Kill Bill Volume 2. It is played in the famous scene when Beatrix Kiddo escapes from the grave thanks to her skills taught by the one and only Pai Mei (R.I.P.)
Click. I have to thank Tarantino for getting me into the precious and majestic works of Morricone (and other composers like Bacalov) because the world of spaghetti western was and still is unknown to me (although my dad is a super fan of westerns and even visited the original locations where they produced many of those movies)
For me L' Arena is like the "Hoppipolla of western music" cause it has the similar uplifting impact on me in the last two minutes. Having said that, Hoppipolla is playing in a different league of course, I just refer to those majestic and uplifting vibes that Morricone created in this piece. This is very very precious.
Btw, I am not one of the players that tried to come up with something special for WV 100. I just thought it is time to send an instrumental again. Despite of popularity of Morricone this song isnt a guaranteer for success, quite the opposite actually, this kind of music was rarely tried out in WV and apart of Amir I didnt know anybody who might fall in love with this, so this is certainly an experiment and I am excited to see, how this turns out!
