#Paris1978

Of course, after an earnest song won in a hilarious, amazing, wig-snatching funfest, the follow-up contest was unbearably not-fun. xfacepalm. Fortunately, Izhar Cohen was such an UNSTOPPABLE force of disco he promptly saved the day from all the ugly ballads performed by ugly men, the worst of which was - as per 70s tradition - the French one, helmed by human-mii hybrid Joël Prévost.

#Jerusalem1979

The first, larval instance of what I like to call a "Good vs Evil contest": where the main contenders are divided equally between AWFUL HELLDEMON JURY PETS and WONDERFUL GLAMOROUS ANGELS, and fortunately the good side won out, hooray! Made even better by most of the also-rans being very good as well.

:10: :de: Dschinghis Khan - "Dschinghis Khan"
:10: :ch: Peter, Sue & Marc ft. Gorps, Pfiri & Knuri - "Trödler & C°"

I've already ranked the 80s before (last year, on my blog), so this is fairly easy.

#TheHague1980

A great contest and a good example of the whole being greater than the sum of its parts. None of these songs make my top 100, but when put together they create a very entertaining, well-paced experience that I love revisiting. Even the red entries are at least fun to roast and I WILL take this moment to rip the very overrated United fave "Amsterdam" to shreds as a demonstration: This hagfish carnie schlager downgrades from meh to actively offensive once you realize what the hell she's singing. "Amsterdam, the city where everthing is possible / A lot of stuff is going on in Amsterdam / Amsterdam has been around for centuries"... so basically like every European city ever? Also this contest is held in The Hague you compacent wench, canal cruise the tering outta here.

:8: :lu: Sophie & Magaly - "Papa pingouïn"
:8: :fr: Profil - "Hé, hé, m'sieurs, dames"
:8: :gr: Anna Vissi & Epikouri - "Otostop"
:8: :be: Telex - "Euro-Vision"
:8: :se: Tomas Ledin - "Just nu"
:8: :tr: Ajda Pekkan - "Petr'Oil"
:8: :ie: Johnny Logan - "What's another year?"
:7: :at: Blue Danube - "Du bist Musik"
:7: :de: Katja Ebstein - "Theater"
:6: :ch: Paola del Medico - "Cinéma"
:6: :dk: Bamses Venner - "Tanker altid på dig"

:5: :pt: José Cid - "Um grande, grande amor"
:4: ::mr Samira Besaïd - "Bitaq'at Kh'ub"
:4: :es: Trigo Limpio - "Quédate esta noche"

:3: :uk: Prima Donna - "Love enough for two"
:2: :fi: Vesa-Matti Loiri - "Huilumies"
:1:  Sverre Kjelsberg & Mattis Hætta - "Sámiid ædnan"
:1: :nl: Maggie MacNeal - "Amsterdam"
:0: :it: Alan Sorrenti - "Non so che darei"

#Dublin1981

One of the most average years in Eurovision, which translates to a contest which is mildly fun overall, but at no point snatches my wig. "Yugoslavia, may I have your votes please?" "I DON'T HAVE IT" *sound of receiver being slammed down on table* is forever though. xheart

:8: :be: Emly Starr - "Samson"
:8: :pt: Carlos Paião - "Playback"
:8: :dk: Tommy Seebach & Debbie Cameron - "Krøller eller ej"
:8: :ie: Sheeba - "Horoscopes"
:7: :il: Hakol Over Habibi - "Halayla"
:7: :yu: :ba: Seid "Vajta" Memic - "Lejla"
:6:  Finn Kalvik - "Aldri i livet"
:6: :uk: Bucks Fizz - "Makin' your mind up"
:6: :cy: Island - "Monika"
:6: :fi: Riki Sorsa - "Reggae OK"

:5: :nl: Linda Williams - "Het is een wonder"
:5: :tr: Modern Folk Üçlüsü & Ayşegül - "Dölne dolap"
:5: :fr: Jean Gabilou - "Humanahum"
:5: :es: Bacchelli - "Y sólo tú"
:5: :se: Björn Skiffs - "Fångad i en dröm"
:5: :de: Lena Valaitis - "Johnny Blue"
:4: :ch: Peter, Sue & Marc - "Io senza te"
:4: :lu: Jean-Claude Pascal "C'est peut-être pas l'Amérique"

:3: :at: Marty Brem - "Wenn du da bist"
:2: :gr: Yiannis Dimitras - "Feggari kalokerino"

#Harrogate1982

Another average year of Eurovision but worse than 1981 for three reasons: First, that stage is WAY too small for any sort of uptempo action and this contest is rife with them. Secondly, the good entries in 82 are less memorable than those in 81 while the BAD 82 entries are more memorable than the 81 ones, including :lu: which is a viscerally offensive piece of shit and :fi: which went to the Montenegrin school of Avant Garde, ie: an entry beloved by Alaska and disliked by everyone else (xlove). Thirdly, 1982 is one of those Business Trip years where it's superobvious from the beginning that Nicole is a full tier ahead of everyone else and wil beat the crap out of whatever is supposed constitute as her 'competition', which is precisely what happens and it's so fucking underwhelming.

:10: :de: Nicole - "Ein bißchen Frieden"
:8: :es: Lucía - "Él"
:8: :tr: Neco - "Hani?"
:8: :il: Avi Toledano - "Hora"
:7: :at: Mess - "Sonntag"
:7: :be: Stella - "Si tu aimes ma musique"
:6: :uk: Bardo - "One step further"
:6: :ch: Arlette Zola - "Amour, on t'aime"
:6: :pt: Doce - "Bem bom"
:6: :nl: Bill van Dijk - "Jij en ik"

:5: :ie: The Duskeys - "Here today, gone tomorrow"
:5: :dk: Brixx - "Video Video"
:5: :yu: :rs: Aska - "Halo Halo"
:4: :se: Chips - "Dag efter dag"
:4: :cy: Anna Vissi - "Mono i agapi"

:1:  Jahn Teigen & Anita Skorgan - "Adieu"
:1: :fi: Kojo - "Nuku pommiin"
:0: :lu: Svetlana - "Cours après le temps"

Eurovision 1974 was the best contest and "Come-Comedie" is my favourite :fr: entry.
At least you also hate :lu: 1973 and dislike "Eres Tu" too.

I don't hate either lol. I'm indifferent to "Eres tu" and I have mixed feelings on "Tu te reconnaîtras" (Like the song, heavily dislike the way Head Gorgon Anne-Marie performs it)

#Munich1983

This was the first "early" year of Eurovision I watched, in 2012 (My first contest was 98, and my first full one was 2000) and not only was it a pleasant surprise at the time, it still stands the test of time nowadays. Not all songs are good, but the good ones all slap, without exception. Also one of the funniest contests in terms of presentation (Marlene trying to host this in three languages and failing spectacularly xheart the hideous floral pieces used to introduce the participating countries, some of which disintegrated BEFORE THE SHOW EVEN BEGAN xheart Some of Terry Wogan's BEST commentary xheart). Topped off by a flawless top 2. The best year of the 80s.

:12: :il: Ofra Haza - "Chai"
:12: :lu: Corinne Hermès - "Si la vie est cadeau"

:4: :gr: Christie Stasinopolou - "Mou les"

:3: :ch: Mariella Farré - "Io cosi non ci sto"
:2: :de: Hoffmann & Hoffmann - "Rücksicht"

#Luxembourg1984

A quiet and unspectacular year, Luxembourg1984 is mostly good due to the extraneous (hosting, stage, VTs, Interval acts) and less so due to the songs. It's not like the songs themselves are bad; listening to 1984 takes very little effort and works best when served as a plate cleanser after watching a shit year. This contest is also ONLY time when :ie: absolutely SHOULD have won the contest so ofc they didn't. xfacepalm. Fuck you, Sweden Culpepper. xslap

:12: :ie: Linda Martin - "Terminal 3"
:10: :dk: Hot Eyes - "Det lige det"
:10: :it: Alice & Battiato - "I treni di Tozeur"

:3: :fr: Annick Thomazeau - "Autant d'amoureux que d'étoiles"
:2: :uk: Belle & The Devotions - "Love games"
:1: :ch: Rainy Day - "Welche Farbe hat der Sonnenschein?"

#Gotenburg1985

Like 1979 a great example of a Good vs Evil Contest. 1985 starts slowly, with a demonic first half and an excellent second half, ending ofc in an EPIC point tally in which Evil (in the form of bottom five esc act WINDEMONS) is finally slain by Good (in the form of Bobbysocks! and the UK jury). Aside from all of that jazz, this contest is made even more delightful by the Best Hostess of All Times Lil Lindfors, whose permanently sardonic self can barely contain her utter disdain for aforementioned evil entries xheart

:12: :tr: MFÖ - "Didai didai dai"
:12: :il: Izhar Cohen - "Olé Olé"
:12: :fi: Sonja Lumme - "Eläköön Ellämä"
:10: :se: Kikki Danielsson - "Bra vibrationer"

:2: :pt: Adelaide - "Penso em ti, eu sei"
:2: :cy: Lia Vissi - "To katalava agra"
:0: :be: Linda Lepomme - "Laat me nu gaan"
:0: :de: Wind - "Für Alle"

#Bergen1986

There's a lot of national pride dripping into my opinion of this contest. However, although Sandra Kim is a great winner, the rest is... quite good? There so much lowbrow fun trash, as is to be expected in a contest that has recently crowned Herreys and Bobbysocks! as winners. It takes forever (14 songs lol) for the first spoilsport to even show up! (which is of course, :de:, the country that has replaced France as the resident helldemon) The only downside for me is that it kind of sags near the end. Also, while Ase Kleveland lacks the hilarious deadbeat sarcasm of a Lil Lindfors or the graceful panache of a Viktor Lazlo, I think she's very underrated as a hostess and a worthy member of the 85-86-87 presentation trifectia. xheat

:12: :be: Sandra Kim - "J'aime la vie"
:10: :pt: Dora - "Não sejas mau pr'a mim"

#Brussels1987

Like 86, 87 holds a lot of national pride for me because it's held in my home country. It's a great contest, with a wonderful winner ("Hold me now" TRIGGERS my inner romantic on a subatomic level) and an engaging host in Viktor Lazlo and the best Belgian entry of all times in "Soldiers of love". However, it is the B-roll material that carries a lot of weight, making 87 arguably the funniest year in all of Eurovision? Not even on a musical level (besides the Icelandic girl singing "Anus in the air"), but on a visual level, from the ridiculous hair and hideous clothes, to tard dances, wayward dress frills and gravity-defying uses of hairspray and off-coloured meshes of hair EVERYWHERE. Eurovision's "Aww Bless" factor has never reached a higher level since. xheart

#Dublin1988

It has been said by me that the first half of 1988 was the last great contest of the 80s. 88 has this weird pacing thing where the first half contains a welcome balance of Good and Bad entries and then Céline outperforms and the contest wilts into a desert of yellow with only two brief oases of entertainment in Denmark and Greece. It's really sad that a contest showing this much promise dies halfway but that's the price we pay for launching one of the best female recording artists of our time into interstellardom.

Also don't watch this year if you speak French. :?, because Michelle Rocca's attempts at the langue d'oil alone are enough to give you massive anxiety and PTSD.

This is the worst year of Eurovision, so I'll just C+P my tumblr write-up because fuck wasting time on this turd of a contest:
What a godawful year. Maybe my least fave, ever? This contest is the only one in the decade I’d recommend you to avoid. It has a myriad of problems (shit hosts that insist on speaking French throughout the entire contest although it’s fucking NINETEEN-EIGHTY-NINE; hideous stage, Basic Bitch winners), but the most problematic one is the music. The best song… is Céline Dion’s opener and it just goes downhill from there. There’s a dearth of fun, uptempo bops, the contest consisting of mostly lame (even by Eurovision standards) death fodder, some of the worst experimental shit I’ve ever seen (including *two* child singers O_O) and anonymous ballads you forget the INSTANT they’ve finished; It’s like the worst fucking case of musical prosopagnosia you’ll ever witness. The only song which shines is Denmark’s antiquated schlager, but mostly because I needed SOMETHING to cling onto for dear life to prevent me from slitting my wrists GOOD LORD.

:5: :be: Ingeborg ft. a VERY loud Stef Bos - "Door de wind"
:5: :de: Not Tony Wegas - "Flieger"
:4: :cy: the Married couple - "Apopse as vrethoume"

:2: :ie: Kiev Connelly & the Missing Passengers - "The real me"
:1: :is: Daniel Águst - Ugliest trousers ever
:1: :fr: Natalie Pâque - "J'ai volé la vie"

and now some of the twenty worst entries in eurovision get their own special place in ranking HELL:

:0: :it: Fausto Leal & Ana Oxa - "horrible noises"
:0: :uk: hideous, smug sore loser - "Why do I always get it wrong? (I thought I'd win it although my song is a nothing)"
:0: :il: demon child - "Derech haMelech"
:0: :es: bride of satan - "nacida par amar el diablo"

Terrible year. dissolve in acid plz.

Based on songs Eurovision 1988 is my all-time least favourite contest and # 1 ( ) got only 5 / 10.
Based on results there are so much least favourites, but 2012, 2016 and 2007 were the worst.

Why you all mostly dislike :uk: entries ?

If you mean me I don't dislike UK in Eurovision. They had many great entries. Mostly in the 90s. But even in the early years UK is 2nd in my ranking in 1970, 3rd in 1969, 5th in 1968, 1st in 1967, 6th in 1966, 3rd in 1965. That's not dislike but one of my favorite countries! xrose

It's not about you, but it's a trend and residents of music forums usually don't like or even hate most :uk: ESC entries, especially from 21st century.
My two least favourite :uk: entries belong to 90s, it's very easy to name them. ;)

My two favorite entries of UK belongs to the 90s and both of them are in my top 10 of all time. I have no idea which UK 90s entries you hate but it won't be surprise to me if favorite entries are the ones you hate the most.

Oh I dislike two of 90s :uk: entries as well, but I'm sure our least faves won't overlap.

#Zagreb1990

I barely remember this year? lol. I mean, my most ~vivid~ memory (aside from the Great 5) is Terry's VISCERAL hate for the animated mascot that appears in the VTs. Well that and the overabundance of ~LovePeaceBallads~. We get it. The Berlin Wall fell. STFU. Please look for my handler who will assign you seats in the Red Zone. In any case because my memory is a state of Reply Hazy, Ask Again Later, take this ranking with a grain of salt.

#Rome1991

An all-time great contest. The playing field in 91 is SO strong, with so many energetic memorable performances and underrated little gems. Both Carola and Amina are in my all-time top 10. But the real ringer of this fantastic contest is the presentation provided by Gigiola Cinquetti and Toto Cotugno, who are both the best and the worst hosts of all time. What a glorious ride, if you haven't seen it already, WATCH IT ASAP!!

#Malmö1992

Ho boy, what a mediocrity. There IS a bevvy enjoyable lameness (including the best demonstration of the Lame Dance by Belgium's Morgane and Christifer Morningstar getting REKT by delivering an all-time awful performance (O) ), but nothing really POPs. Watch this year for the sake of competionism but it's easily skippable. Also, I know this year is below average but um, a top 4 of the three anglophone songs and DEMON MESSIAH Mia Martini is a really shitty way to end, yw.
