FSC August 2017 Gord Downie - The Only Place To Be
For August Canada is sending rock musician and Canadian legend Gord Downie, who is the lead singer for the band "Tragically Hip". Downie is an icon of the Canadian music scene, his music has received some of Canada's highest honours including the Governor General's award, and the Order of Canada. Unfortunately, in May 2016, Downie announced that he had been diagnosed with a terminal brain tumour, and in August 2016 he played his final concert in his hometown of Kingston, Ontario. An estimated 12 million people tuned in.

USS (Ubiquitous Synergy Seeker) is a Canadian alternative rock musical duo that began working out of Parkdale,a neighbourhood situated in the west end of Toronto, Ontario, Canada. The band is composed of vocalist, guitarist, and erhu player Ashley Buchholz (aka Ash Boo-Schultz) and turntablist/hype man Jason "Human Kebab" Parsons.
The USS sound is a mixture of drum and bass beats, grunge-like guitar riffs, and 2-step rhythms. "We like to call what we do the campfire after-party," Ash said, "It's like you're at Nirvana Unplugged but there's a drum and bass party and glow sticks all around you."

Sina Bathaie (Siː Nɒː BæT hɒː iː), composer, Santur player based in Toronto, Canada is known for his unique style and approach toward Persian contemporary music. His hypnotic performances have garnered him fans from across the globe. Born in Iran, Sina started learning Santur at the age seven from his father, Master Javad Bathaie. He then followed his passion in music by practicing Persian classical repertoire (Radif) with the instrument Oud and explored the concept of rhythm by learning Tonbak (Persian Percussion).
Sina entered the world music scene soon after moving to Canada, and received recognition by being featured at events and festivals such as the Luminato Festival, Aga Khan Museum, In/Future - a Festival of Art & Music, Small World Music, Mundial Montreal, Sunshine Festival, Quiet Strings and South Asia Calling. CP24 and CBC Radio Metro Morning have also featured him. He developed his own style of music through years of experimental collaboration and attending artist residencies such as the Banff Centre for Performing Art and achieved a unique sound in world fusion music which has received many positive reviews.
His first album Sound of Silence was recorded and produced in Montreal in 2012 and has been acclaimed by music critics. His latest album Ray of Hope was released on Windcatcher Records on Oct 2017 with his World fusion ensemble. Sina has been also active in the movie industry and composed original music for the movies such as The Horse Latitudes and Un royaume déménage (Once Upon a Kingdom).

The nominations for Canada's annual national music awards, the Junos, came out today and of the 5 nominees for Single of the Year, 2 are FSC songs: Confetti - Charlotte Cardin (July 2023) and Greedy - Tate McRae (December 2023). Lu Kala (singer of Hotter Now - November 2023) is also nominated for Single of the Year but for a different song.
Charlotte Cardin actually has the most overall nominations this year including Album of the Year which includes both Confetti and another FSC song Next to You (October 2023). She also got nominated for Songwriter of the Year for her work on Confetti and two other songs.
Lu Kala was also nominated for Breakthrough Artist of the Year.
And this month's (February 2024) artist, Rêve, is nominated for Best Pop Album!
