The Host city for this FSC #160-edition is Belgrade - Serbia. Beograd in Serbian language it's the
largest city and Capital of Serbia. It is located at the confluence of the Sava and Danube (Donau)
rivers , and the crossroads of the Pannonian Plain & the Balkan Peninsula . Nearly 1.7 million peo
ple live in Belgrade . It is one of the oldest , continuously inhabited cities in Europe and the world.

One of the most important prehistoric cultures of Europe, the " Vinča " culture , evolved within the
Belgrade area in the 6th millennium BC. In antiquity, Thraco-Dacians inhabited the region & , after
279 BC , Celts settled the city , naming it Singidūn . It was conquered by the Romans , under reign
of the Roman Emperor Caesar Augustus , and awarded Roman city rights in the mid-2nd century.

Belgrade was settled by the Slavs in the 520s, and changed hands several times between the Byz
antine Empire , the Frankish Empire , the Bulgarian Empire , and the Kingdom of Hungary before it
became the seat of the Serbian king , Stefan Dragutin in 1284 . Belgrade , served as Capital of the
Serbian Despotate , during reign of Stefan Lazarević . Later. it returned to Hungarian king in 1427.

In 1521 Belgrade was conquered by the Ottomans and became the seat of the Sanjak of Smeder
evo . It frequently passed from Ottoman to Habsburg rule , which saw the destruction of most of
the city during the Ottoman–Habsburg wars. In the period after the Serbian Revolution ( a nation
al uprising between ca 1804 and 1835 ) Belgrade again was named the Capital of Serbia in 1841

Northern Belgrade , remained the southernmost Habsburg post until 1918 , when it was attached
to the city due to former AustroHungarian territories becoming part of the new Kingdom of Serbs
Croats & Slovenes after WW1. Belgrade was Capital of Yugoslavia from its creation in 1918 to its
dissolution in 2006. The city of Belgrade has been battled over in 115 wars throughout its history

Being Serbia's primary city, Belgrade has special administrative status within Serbia. It is the seat
of the central government, administrative bodies, and government ministries , as well as home of
almost all of the largest Serbian companies, media, and scientific institutions. Belgrade is classif
ied as a Beta-Global City (which means it is seen a primary node in the global economic network)

Belgrade’s time under Roman Rule is well documented. In 34-33 BC, the Roman army reached Be
lgrade . It became the romanised Singidunum in the 1st century AD and , by the mid-2nd century,
the city was proclaimed a municipium by the Roman authorities , evolving into a full-fledged colo
nia by end of the century . In 395 AD , the site passed to the Eastern Roman or Byzantine Empire.

In 442 the area was ravaged by Attila the Hun. In 471 it was taken by Theodoric the Great, king of
the Ostrogoths, who continued into Italy. As the Ostrogoths left, another Germanic tribe, the Gepi
ds, invaded the city . In 539 it was retaken by the Byzantines . In 577 some 100.000 Slavs poured
into Thrace and Illyricum (incl. Serbia) , pillaging cities and more permanently settling the region.

The name Beograd or Belgrade has a history . The oldest preserved written mention of “Belgrad”
is said to be from a letter, of Pope John VIII, to the Bulgarian prince Boris in 878. Built of a light-
coloured, local limestone & named by the Slavs “ Beli Grad ” (“White City”). Belgrad then became
Beograd , which is the name modern Serbs use for their Capital . In English , it is called Belgrade

‘Serbia: History of Orthodox Faith’
‘The Temple of Saint Sava’

The Serbs were converted to Christianity not long after their arrival in the Balkans, before the Gre
at Schism split the Christian Church, into rival Latin-speaking (Roman Catholic) and Greek-speak
ing (Eastern Orthodox) Churches. During the early Middle Ages, the religious allegiance of the Se
rbs was divided between the two churches. In the ninth and tenth centuries, Orthodoxy made gre
at inroads into Eastern Europe. In commemoration of their baptisms, each Serbian family or tribe
began to celebrate an exclusively Serbian custom called Slava in a special way to honor the Saint
on whose day they received the sacrament of Holy Baptism. It is the most solemn day of the year

So it is for all Serbs of the Orthodox faith , and has played a role of vital importance in the history
of the Serbian people. Slava is actually the celebration of the spiritual birthday of the Serbian peo
ple which the Church blessed and proclaimed it a Church institution . The various Serbian princip
alities were united ecclesiastically in the early 13th century by Saint Sava , the son of the Serbian
ruler and founder of the Serbian medieval state . Sava persuaded the Ecumenical Patriarch of Co
nstantinople to establish the Church in Serbia as an autocephalous body, with Sava himself as its
archbishop, consecrated in 1219. This sealed Orthodox Christian supremacy in the Serbian realm

The Temple of Saint Sava is a Serbian Orthodox church which sits on the Vračar plateau in Belgra
de, Serbia. It was planned as the bishopric seat & main cathedral of the Serbian Orthodox Church.
The church is dedicated to Saint Sava, the founder of the Serbian Orthodox Church and an import
ant figure in medieval Serbia. It's built on the presumed location of St. Sava's grave. His coffin had
been moved from Mileševa Monastery, to Belgrade . The coffin was placed on a pyre and burnt in
1595 by Ottoman Grand Vizier Sinan Pasha. Bogdan Nestorović and Aleksandar Deroko were fina
lly chosen to be the architects of the church in 1932 . There were debates, on the size & structure
of the building and it became more ambitious than originally planned. The new design did depart
from the original plans and was set to replicate the dimensions and architecture of Hagia Sophia.

The Temple of Saint Sava , is today one of the largest Orthodox churches in the world, and in fact
ranks amongst the largest churches in the world . It is the most recognisable building in Belgrade
and a true landmark in the city. In May 2021 the entire Vračar plateau which surrounds the church
was declared a spatial cultural-historical unit , and placed under the state protection, as the Saint
Sava's Plateau. The rationale in government decision included "symbolical, memorial, cultural-his
torical, architectural-urban and artistic values of the locality , which represents memory spot of 2
turning points in Serbian history: the burning of Saint Sava's relics, and the First Serbian Uprising.

After WW2, Serbia became part of the Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia and Belgrade was
its Capital. The city grew rapidly, developing as a major industrial centre. In 1948 construction of
Novi Beograd (New Belgrade), a new city-region, started. In 1958 Belgrade's first tv station began
broadcasting. In 1962 Belgrade Nikola Tesla Airport was built. In 1968 were big student protests.

In 1972 Belgrade faced a smallpox outbreak. Between October 1977 and March 1978 the city ho
sted the first major gathering of the OSCE, and in 1980 Belgrade hosted the UNESCO General Co
nference . Josip Broz Tito died in May 1980 . In 1992 Yugoslavia broke up. After a union with Mo
ntenegro, Serbia became an independent country/nation once again for the first time since 1918

Belgrade is today the financial centre of Serbia and Southeast Europe. It is also home to the coun
try's Central Bank, important companies, enterprises and around 50.000 shops . As of 2019 Belgr
rade generated over 40% of Serbia’s GDP. New Belgrade is the country's Central business district.
Belgrade also has 2 state universities incl. the University of Belgrade and several private colleges

The historical core of Belgrade, Kalemegdan lies on the right banks of both rivers Sava & Danube
(Donau) . The Belgrade Fortress consists of the old citadel & Kalemegdan Park. It is located in St
ari Grad (Old Town). Belgrade Fortress was declared a Monument of Culture of Exceptional Impo
rtance in 1979, & is protected by the Republic. It is the most visited tourist attraction in Belgrade.

Welcome, everyone to Serbia and to the beautiful and historic city of Belgrade! xcheer

In the tradition of the FSC Shows I host/create, the Opening and Closing acts are International acts specifically invited to this event for your entertainment and enjoyment to supplement the National acts (the 2 Serbian interval acts selected by the Serbian jury + the previous month’s Serbian winner) that are also part of the FSC Show presentation.

In addition, there are 8 selected Serbian ‘Bonus’ music videos hidden/linked beneath (also some smaller) pictures/flags in the presentation (most of them chosen by the Serbian jury), and also a hidden ‘Easter Egg’ (an xtra song), so check well and make sure you don’t miss any of the songs!

This edition’s theme is: ‘Serbia: History of Orthodox Faith’ with combined focus on Serbian religious history, general history and the The Temple of Saint Sava in Belgrade, the famous Orthodox church with its own history. The theme is framed in beautiful banners of this church, symbol and monument at night. We wish to pay tribute to these important aspects of Belgrade and Serbia’s history in this June Show presentation.

Enjoy this FSC June Show from beautiful and historic Belgrade, Serbia
