I want to talk about the host city race for this year (2022), especially about the situation in Rome, the capital city.

The situation regarding Rome is similar to that of Copenhagen in 2014 (when they were about to host Eurovision). Copenhagen had to use an ex-industrial hub as their venue because other venues are either too small (Brøndby Hall and Ballerup Super Arena) or too large (Parken Stadium) and there was not enough time to build a new venue (but it finally came in 2017 as Royal Arena).

On the other hand, Rome's main indoor venue currently has at least two issues:
  1. Unusual seating shape (circular instead of U-shaped or horseshoe-shaped).
  2. Vaulted roof (making it unable to hang suspended loads normally used in Eurovision).
Adding a retractable roof to the Stadio Olimpico is not practical either, because it is just too large.

So, based on that, it is necessary for Rome's authorities to build a new venue in any way, shape or form:
  • remodeling their main indoor venue "PalaLottomatica"
  • demolishing "PalaLottomatica" and building a new indoor venue on the former ground that PalaLottomatica was, or
  • building a new indoor venue as an addition to the PalaLottomatica
with the following recommended specifications (of mine):
  • indoor (of course), with good air-conditioning.
  • U-shaped/horseshoe seating plan (similar to other common indoor venues such as London's O2 or Hamburg's Barclaycard Arena).
  • minimum rigging height of 20 metres.
  • capacity of between 17,000 and 20,000 for concerts (and between 14,000 and 16,000 for indoor sports).
  • a roof structure that is good enough for hanging suspended loads.
  • supported by a good sound system for musical events.
Even if Rome is not chosen as the host city, the new venue will still be beneficial for Rome itself to host future sports and musical events.

So if it'll be possible I'll go to Eurovision next year! (I'll probably go to a semi-final since I'm still a student and don't have a lot of money) and it's also rather close to my home since I live in Slovenia so it will most likely be around 6-hour drive.

So my question to anyone who has already attended Eurovision is - is it worth it or is it better to watch it at home with all the camera angles?

And also any tips that could be useful? :)

I'd be very grateful if I get some responses!

According to Eurovision World, the following 26 countries have expressed their interest for participation in the Eurovision Song Contest 2022:

Albania
Australia
Belgium
Bulgaria
Croatia
Czech Republic
Denmark
Estonia
Finland
France
Germany
Greece
Israel
Italy
Lithuania
Malta
Netherlands
Norway
Poland
Romania
San Marino
Serbia
Spain
Sweden
Switzerland

Wikipedia currently shows all of the above, except Croatia, as having confirmed ESC 2022 participation.

That leaves the following 13 countries, which took part in the ESC 2021, but have not yet confirmed participation in ESC 2022.

Austria
Azerbaijan
Cyprus
Georgia
Iceland
Ireland
Latvia
Moldova
North Macedonia
Portugal
Russia
Slovenia
United Kingdom

That seems an awful lot of countries yet to confirm participation, considering it's now the last weekend in August. Don't broadcasters have to confirm by the middle of September?

^ Ukraine is too exclusive for both lists  (on May 26 we confirmed Vidbir 2022).

ps. Armenia is semi-confirmed. Their HoD wrote: "The countdown to Eurovision 2022 has already began! Great news soon!".

I think we shouldn't be scared for Austria, Azerbaijan, Cyprus, Iceland, Ireland, Moldova, Portugal, Russia, Slovenia and the UK - they all had either great results in the not-so-distant past and also have great viewership.

Georgia, Latvia, and Macedonia are the ones who I'm worried about. All have had very bad results in the past and the interest is not that big (especially in Georgia)... so we shall see... But I'm sure at least 2 of them if not all 3 of them will confirm their participation after all...

Austria definitely will take part. The deadline for the song submission was last week.

According to Wikipedia, as of 22 September 2021, the broadcasters of 33 countries have confirmed their intention to participate in the Eurovision Song Contest 2022. All of them took part in the ESC 2021.

That just leaves the following 6 countries which took part in the Eurovision Song Contest 2021, whose participation in the Eurovision Song Contest 2022 is still unknown:

Austria
Cyprus
Moldova
North Macedonia
Russia
United Kingdom

I thought the broadcasters of those countries had until 16 September 2021 to submit their applications for participation in next year's ESC. Surely the broadcasters of those countries must have made a decision one way or the other by now.

Now for countries that didn't participate in ESC 2021 (or for several years for that matter). According to Wikipedia, Andorra, Luxembourg, Monaco and Slovakia will not participate in ESC 2022. Bosnia & Herzegovina are unlikely to return in 2022. That leaves Armenia, Hungary, Montenegro and Turkey. Any chance of any of those four returning in 2022?

Ok, they literally said the same thing a month ago with that rotating pizza marinara, but I think this time they will reveal it. Maybe they have the name of the hosting city from days, but they will create hype. My bet is Turin.

By the way, they postponed the announcement because of the election of majors in some of the cities involved. So the announcement was previously postponed to not influence the voting and it seems reasonable to me.
