Decided to revive this game from my now long gone first times around the forum. We never finished it then but I hope it can be done this time. A little reminder of what it is all about from the original thread. Then I wrote:

I've been wanting to host a contest for a while. Initially my idea was to do this in a "Best song in language X" format but then I came to the conclusion that this would only be possible with a handful of countries or so. Not to mention that the contest in English language would make the others look so small in comparison.

So instead I worked on the idea and decided to simplify it. I'd like to see us determining which has been the best non-English language song ever since the pre-1999 restriction of having to sing in your own language has been lifted. I've been compiling a list of such entries with the help of wikipedia. Now here's the thing though. I've been very literal about the languages that are listed there for songs. This might make it seem unfair to songs that are performed mostly in a non-English language but that have single line in English and are therefore being left out of this contest. I found a way to make it fair however, we can be hosting a "Best mixed with English" contest right after this one comes to an end And then we could always do the English one if it is wanted, though that would be a massive one. We could even do retro editions if there's enough people interested in taking part in those. We'll see how this develops and come back to that later.

All of this still seems up to date and explains well the idea behind the contest.

But had to change the line-up in order to include entries from the last 4 years obviously. So here it is how things will be done:

175 songs will be competing for the honor of best non-English entry that has been performed during these past 19 years. There will be 4 stages: 8 eight-finals composed by 20 songs each with 10 going through and then a 9th one with 15 where 7 go through, then 4 quarter-finals with again 20 songs competing in each and 10 going through and a fifth with 7 having also half (3) of those going through then 2 semi-finals with 20 songs on the first one and 23 on the 2nd one. 10 go through from both. And finally the grand finale with 20 songs fighting for the win.

I wrote then also:
I've grouped the eight-final rosters by proximity of year performance. I'm not sure if that's the best way to go, but it feels like it, it would feel extremely unfair to have a 1999 song competing with a 2014 song Most people who take part in these games haven't followed ESC for that long, so it's simply what makes the most sense to me. We can discuss this though.

Which still also holds actual meaning nowadays.

This time I'll have someone helping me with banners. Recaps are still an issue for me so only if someone would like to do them I'd gladly appreciate it. But we can just do it without recaps as last time, was no problem. Though of course, always fancier when recaps are made. If anyone has the time and the will to do them, let me know.

Here is the roster to the 9 eight-finals:

A last quote from the original writings to wrap up the thread:

If you notice that I have forgotten some song or added some incorrectly, please let me know. I think that I was pretty thorough but feel free to give it another look by yourself if you want.

I'll leave this thread open for about a day so that format, entries and whatever else needs to be discussed can be done. Should no substantial objections arise, we'll kick off with the first eight-final shortly then. Votes will be collected through ScoreWiz (if it's still up and running, if not, whatever is used these days then), please only vote by PM in last case scenario. Hope we'll be having fun with this again ;)

Re: Best non-English language entry 1999-2018

Yay!!! Amazing game! xheart xcheer I'm so happy this one is back! xcheer

If I may add, please do not use Wikipedia as criteria. I remember last year some songs with significant English were included and some with nominally few words didn't because someone on Wikipedia wrote so. I think most fair criteria would be that before each Eight-Final you review each song to look very good if it has any English word in it! Because it doesn't make sense to let some with English and some not. I suggest to put all songs that are in big part sang in non-English language (like France 2001 or Bosnia and Herzegovina 2003 or Croatia 2003 for example) in contest right away or simply do not let any song with English lyrics (in any form) to be part of contest.
I'm very busy at the moment but if I have more time by QF phase, I might help out with recaps. :)

Re: Best non-English language entry 1999-2018

Hey Hele. xwave Good to hear from you again. Glad to see someone from the old original thread posting here as well :)

I had a feeling that if you'd comment you'd say something about wikipedia as a source since I remember you posting about it 4 years ago as well :D While I agree with you I don't have the time to nitpick what is a non-English entry or not and without having given much thought to I was generally fine with what wikipedia had listed. It's a lot of songs after all and the details can be many in many forms (like, what if it's just one word or one line or the chorus or part of the song, etc.) so it could be a lengthy task and in the end we all have different ways to see it and define what is or not acceptable.

Therefore I have added the songs you have mentioned to the roster and rewrote a bit of my original thread. If you have more songs that you feel should or shouldn't be here let me know. I'm only going forward with the game when participants are fine with the roster. So I gave about one more day again.

Thank you for offer regarding recaps. I'd love to have them if you have the time xheart I might give a go myself for the eight-finals, just haven't really found a tutorial on how to do it so far. So if you know the formula and want to share feel to free to drop it on my inbox ;)
You or anyone else that knows.

Glad to see this back! I discovered last time that my votes were almost completely different to everyone else in almost every round, so hopefully that won't be the case again this time!

About 3 days seems like fair pace for voting to me, but fear not writing something down if you think that more time should be given.
If you detect any typo and wrong linking up there, let me know.

Unfortunately I couldn't find a tutorial about how to make recaps so it goes old style for now.

I'd love to vote but then I'd have to listen all these old ESC songs I don't know of all at once

It just isn't necessary to vote in all these fun forum games at the same time as my most important exams :(

The selection of the first round was still not so difficult for me. But I already glanced at the other finals and there I it is sometimes a very hard decision. Either too many good or sometimes too less. :D
