Re: BELARUS 2019

Can anyone explain the Belarussian fondness for synth-rock, and black leather or plastic clothing? Is it just a random obsession of whatever company selects your entries, or is it something deeper?

Please no more English and/or trashy entries.

I would prefer to get a honest piece of music again like 2017.

2017 was literary the best Belarusian entry to date xclap

2004-2005 are kinda guilty pleasures for me, they aged badly but they worked in that era of ESC and they were so campy and quirky and so Eurovision that it worked...

2011 is another oddball that kinda worked, although technically not a good song but that year was generally weak anyways ... 2015 was underrated though, together with 2017 and their first two ones, it was among the few "good" entries Belarus sent to the contest.

But the best result for Belarus was 2007 - Koldun, by far!

Still a bad song though, and it has aged ridiculously bad as well... I remember back then I could tolerate it but now ... no chance

I agree.

+ 2007 was kinda a horrible year for Eurovision, in my opinion.

Personally, I think that the "good years" of Eurovision started one year later in 2008.
Don't get me wrong, I have been a fan before as well but most songs were either camp, trashy or utterly outdated and not contemporary.
Things changed with the introduction of the two semi finals and the introduction of the juries as well as Alexander Rybak, Lena and Loreen winning. Finally, we are getting contemporary, innovative and progressive entries as well and the reputation of Eurovision has changed for the better.
Especially the 90s and the early 00s were totally "clichée" and "niche" - Of course, this doesn't mean that we didn't have quality entries and beautiful ones before but they didn't outnumber the "Eurovision-esque" entries...
Koldun's entry wouldn't have survived a semi in 2009.

I have to say I thought 2007 was the strongest year of the modern era. At least 20 songs I absolutely loved. I thought 2008 was the worst year for quality until 2018 arrived. I feel the last good year was 2015.

I love how taste differs, although I can "sorta" get where Mainshow is coming from, I however loved 2004-2005, yes some of those entries would not survive ESC today, but those years were just so fun, the expansion with countries added new flavor and life to the contest. 2006-2007 were a bit down though, 2008-2009 were awesome though but although 2010-2011 had some good moments, I thought those years were generally weak, 2012 somehow was great again but after that I must then wait until 2018 to truly like an ESC year again, 2013-2017 were sorta like 2006-2007 and 2010-2011 to me, some great stuff but the quality was generally more uneven... apart from 2012, it seems like since the introduction of semi system, ESC goes in pairs for me, so since I liked 2018, 2019 should be a good year too... I just hope it can stay that way!

I have never said that Alexander Rybak's "Fairytale" was modern or current sounding. However, Norway's victory also helped Eurovison gaining popularity and a better reputation - especially in Central Europe.

I guess that our tastes really differ. 2018 is my favourite Eurovision entry ever in terms of diversity and quality of the entries whilst I still believe that 2007 was quite painful for me (I basically just use the entries from Czech Republic, Georgia and Slovenia and skipping the rest).

Oh, don't get me wrong, I do love the shiny and brigthy mid 00s in Eurovision but even though they were super entertaining, colourful and joyful, I think that those years kinda "hurt" the reputation of the contest (at least here in Central Europe) because it still make people think that Eurovision is all camp, gimmick-ish. If you compare 2018 to it, for example, I think that only Moldova and maybe Belarus (due to the performance) can be called "cheesy, trashy, camp" but still, a majority of the general public perceives Eurovision like that and they don't understand are quite surprised that jazz-y songs can do well (Italy 2011, Portugal 2017), country tracks (The Netherlands 2014) and that "Euphoria" was born due to Eurovision.. they are always surprised when I mention that... Nowadays, I think that Eurovision has become a better represenation of contemporary music and it's more diverse in terms of genres/styles.

Keeping my fingers crossed that you will enjoy 2019, too!

Re: BELARUS 2019

Georgia, Slovenia and Czech Republic are all in my top 5 in 2007!

While I think 2006 was a really weak year for Eurovision, I enjoy 2007 and 2008 a lot. Those years weren't really dominated by "quality entries" (even though 2008 had Serbia, Turkey, Israel, San Marino...) but rather by fun and entertaining songs and performances. I don't really listen to most of the entries but I always enjoy looking back and (if I'm really bored) rewatching them.

2018 is most likely my favourite Eurovision year of the 21st century (songwise). 2012 and 2015 were really good too. The last contests that I liked just as much as this (soon last) year's were 1998 and 1999

Anyway talking about Belarus: I think going internal could probably benefit them a lot but I would really miss their national final and especially its iconic auditions (one of my favourite nf season events each year xheart)

Re: BELARUS 2019

My previous reply is probably a bit confusing: 2006 was also a very fun year but overall I just found the vast majority of entries that year really mediocre
