Re: Áfram Ísland! | WV 84: Lockerbie - Heim

For WV 85 I will send an returning artist.. it's a singer whose band I sent already a long time ago. This time however, I'll send him/her alone :)

Plan changed... I will send a composer whose band I sent before, but it's not that long ago. This time however, I'll send him/her alone. It's about time I send this person cause he/she is very popular and influential nowadays xwhistle

WV 85: Jóhann Jóhannsson - The Sun's Gone Dim and The Sky's Turned Black

johann-johannsson-4aa8921e4bfcd88b.jpg

Lyrics

The sun's gone dim
And the sky's turned black
Cause I loved her
And she didn't love back

This time I decided to send the 2006 masterpiece The Suns Gone Dim and The Sky's Turned Black by star composer Jóhann Jóhannsson. After sending Der Klang der Offenbarung des Göttlichen (Teil 1) I thought it was about time to drive the hosts crazy by forcing them to write down a never ending song title. The song is a over 6 minutes long mostly instrumental piece of music with some robot vocals and soprano voice in between.. it has a very intense atmosphere and its truly breathtaking... the composition is also pretty beautiful, especially the last couple of minutes. The video I sent is only 5:30 and one minute of intro is missing here... but I prefered this because of the beautiful landscapes.

Jóhann Jóhannsson is an Icelandic composer who has been releasing solo albums since 2002 as well as composing music for a wide array of media including theatre, dance, TV and films.

About his successes (in Hollywood)

In 2016 Jóhann signed with Deutsche Grammophon through which he has released his latest solo album Orphée. Some of his works in film include the original scores for Denis Villeneuve's Prisoners, Sicario and Arrival as well as James Marsh's The Theory of Everything. Jóhann was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Original Score for both The Theory of Everything and Sicario, and won a Golden Globe for Best Original Score for The Theory of Everything.

About his early life

Jóhannsson was born and raised in Reykjavík, where he later went on to study languages and literature at university. He started his musical career as a guitarist playing in indie rock bands. In 1999 Jóhann co-founded "Kitchen Motors"; a think tank, art organisation and music label that encouraged interdisciplinary collaborations between artists from punk, jazz, classical, metal and electronic music. His own sound arose out of these musical experimentations.

About "IBM 1401, A User's Manual", the album that contains "The Suns gone Dim"
IBM 1401, A User's Manual is Jóhann's fourth studio album, inspired by his father. Jóhann father was an IBM engineer and one of Iceland's first computer programmers, who used early hardware to compose melodies during his downtime at work. Jóhann used sounds produced from the electromagnetic emissions of the IBM 1401 as part of the composition. IBM 1401, A User's Manual was released on October 30, 2006 under 4AD."Inspired by a recording of an IBM mainframe computer which Jóhann's father, Jóhann Gunnarsson, made on a reel-to-reel tape machine more than 30 years ago, the piece was originally written to be performed by a string quartet as the accompaniment to a dance piece by the choreographer Erna Ómarsdóttir. For the album version, Jóhann rewrote the entire score, and it was recorded by a sixty-piece string orchestra. He also added a new final section and incorporated electronics alongside those original tape recordings of the singing computer.

About collaborations
In March 2015, Jóhann teamed up with ACME (American Contemporary Music Ensemble) and the Grammy Award-winning vocal ensemble Roomful of Teeth to perform Drone Mass at The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York. His list of collaborators include Tim Hecker, Hildur Guðnadóttir, Pan Sonic, CAN drummer Jaki Liebezeit, Marc Almond, Barry Adamson, and Stephen O'Malley of Sunn O))). In 1999 Jóhann Jóhannsson founded the Apparat Organ Quartet, which has released two albums since 2002 with live performances in Europe, America and Japan.

Re: Áfram Ísland! | WV 85: Jóhann Jóhannsson - The Sun's Gone Dim and The Sky's Turned Black

A couple of months I was secretly photographed while taking a walk:

Yes, somehow I fell in love with failures. Meanwhile I am happy the database isnt updated for ages now... Looking at the database is a nice flashback to a better time. Right now, let's face the reality, I am one of the least successful players here but damn, it doesnt actually bother me. I hate to fail with the song I sent this edition but that it's mainly cause I saw a couple of boring songs advancing while my song - although standing out in the semi - did fail. And it hurts to see one of the most active and hard-working artists in Iceland and moreover a very gifted composer doesnt receive the credit he deserves But generally speaking... I dont really care about missing the finals cause at some point I started to become satisified with what I achieved in the past. I got everything I wanted to get in the last 3 years in this community so I guess getting to know the unlucky part of the community is an experience I still have to make. So hello, here I am, nice to meet you. Let's fail together xheart

Consequently, my next entry will be another safe failure. it's an electro song. A sample of an old Icelandic song.

WV 86: Hermigervill - Vegir liggja til allra átta (Roads lead to all directions)

qb3EedN.jpg

Lyrics

This is a sample of an 1955 song. This sample has no lyrics but the original song has. For those who are interested here it is:

Vegir liggja til allra átta
enginn ræður för
hugur leitar hjóðra nátta
er hlógu orð á vör
og laufsins græna á garðsins trjám
og gleðiþyts í blænum.
Þá voru hjörtun heit og ör
og hamingja í okkar bænum.

Vegir liggja til allra átta
á þeim verða skil
margra’ er þrautin þungra nátta
að þjást og finna til
og bíða þess að byrti’ á ný
og bleikur morgun rísi.
Nú strýkur blærinn stafn og þil
stynjandi í garðsins hrisi.

Translation

Roads lead to all directions
no one can handle it
mind seeks the night
there is a laughing word
and the green leaves on the garden's trees
and joy in the eyes.
Then the hearts got hot and feisty
and happiness in our town.

Roads lead to all directions
They will be understood
many 'are the pains of heavy joints
to suffer and feel
and wait for a restart
and a pink morning rises.
Now the blaze blows and threads
thugs in the courtyard of the garden.

Hermigervill is some weird experimental electronic artists whose songs I mostly despise cause they are badly composed and too messy. He uses too many synthesizer sound effects, some of his songs is like a mixture of different farts. Then however, I found the album "Hermigervill plays Iceland Pop classics" - an album full of samples of Icelandic schlager and pop hits of the pre-björk/sugarcubes era... like 1960s and 1970s and so on. I am a sucker for the old icelandic music scene, there are great unknown tunes that'd deserve more attention. And Hermigervill actually manage to mix the catchy melodies with powerful electrobeats and it turns out greatly.

This one is originally a song by the charming Elly Vilhjálms who was the elder sister of the legendary Vilhjalmur Vilhjalmsson. You probably dont remember Vilhjálmur, but I used his songs prominently in my Retro NF for WV 69. "Söknudur" and "Vor í Vaglaskogi" were his most famous ones. He is considered one of the most gifted singer in Icelands history but sadly he passed away early. Also Elly passed away already over 20 years ago, but her 1955 song "Vegir liggja til allra átta" is a hit thats still enjoyed and appreciated by Icelandic people. The song features the first guitar solo of Icelandic music history. Click here to hear the original version.

The Hermigervill video I uploaded has a bit potato quality which you notice when you play the song on spotify. Sadly, the Hermigervill version didnt exist on YouTube before and not even on Soundcloud. I didnt find a MP3 anywhere in the world wide web so I recorded the MP3 by myself with a recording programm. Now I saw you could actually buy the MP3 version on amazon for 1€ I should consider it tbh

Re: Áfram Ísland! | WV 86: Hermigervill - Vegir liggja til allra átta

I'm already about to make plans for the future. My current entry won't qualify for the final so I have good reasons to already look ahead. The other night I dreamed of reaching the final again and it felt like a relief. Let's try to make this dream true

There is something that I thought was a good idea but sadly I won't be able to implement. As a national final I planned some kind of Icelandic "Bundesvision", so that every region would take part with one artist/band. I think Daniel once inspired me to do something like that, even though I think he talked about cities.
Anyway, there are eight regions in Iceland: Höfuðborgarsvæðið, Suðurnes, Vesturland, Vestfirðir, Norðurland vestra, Norðurland eystra, Austurland and Suðurland.
Eight songs would be alright for a National Final, and I should find one band of each region that I enjoy listening to. The answer is No.

First problem... although Höfuðborgarsvæðið only represents 1% of Iceland's area, it is home to over 60% of the Icelandic population.

Second problem... I couldnt figure out the birth places of many Icelandic artists. Obviously they dont attach importance to where they are from which doesnt surprise me at all. In Iceland there arent any regional rivalries. Everybody is Icelandic at first place, cause Iceland is a big village after all and thats what counts only.

Third problem... Many Icelandic artist move to Reykjavik anyway cause that's the place where they can gain popularity. That means that around 90% of artists or bands on my list are active or have been founded in Höfuðborgarsvæðið.

Fourth problem... I checked out all Icelandic bands and artists I listened to at least 7 times according to last.fm and it took me over 4 hours - but still I didnt find any artist from the east coast (Austurland) which is the key reason why I cant do this NF. Later I researched and find one female folk-rock singer from there and she is actually decent but not decent enough to consider... and including a discovery I only made for this bold purpose isn't exactly what I want.

I still want to do a NF and there are 3 options. Those who doesnt hate me yet are welcome to tell me their preferences

1) If I can't implement the Icelandic Bundesvision idea I still could put the focus on one specific region and organize a NF with singers only from one region. I think I found enough artists from Vestfirðir (this is the peninsula in the north west), this NF would be a nice mixture of rock and folk music. Or how about Norðurland eystra? In that NF I could come up with some former ESC artists. ;)

2) If I wanna send a christmas song I guess I already have to do it in next edition. So far I used to send my christmas songs to the christmas spin-off but maybe I renounce that for a change and organize a big Christmas NF!

3) I didn't send Ásgeir for quite a long time and he released a new album in the meantime... I'd love to treat you with an Ásgeir NF. xcheer

Please, tell me your favorite option!!

Now suddenly we have a clear winner.. 12 points between 1st and 2nd place xcrazy

I guess I will just send the song now cause I cant imagine there will be any change xthink

I'm so satisfied there are actually 8 voters after I ignored thousands of invitations and hardly voted in any NFS in the last couple of months

Re: Áfram Ísland! | WV 87: ÁSGEIR NATIONAL FINAL IS UP

Was just about to finish looking through the NF (did the first few songs earlier) and send through some hot last-minute votes... but if you've got a clear winner, then I guess that means I can get to sleep a few minutes earlier too. Best of luck!

WV 87: Ásgeir - Hljóða Nótt (Silent Night)

4YrXOGG.jpg

Lyrics

You can read the original lyrics in the video, so I'll only post the translation here:

The silent night is all that was before,
I had a fare but don't remember where,
fled, gone, what is said and seen,
the truth hurts if a lie follows along.
Raises a sword and a shield.

The poetic night is all that was before.
Had a treasure box but don't remember where.
Beaten with logs, demands prayers and requests.
Broken promises make a faint sound.
Both the hot and the cold ones.

The good night is all that was before.
Had gold but don't remember where.
Where is the faith that goes on its feet.
Father of the world, will you help me?
Faith will gain power.

The silent night is all that was before.
Had treasures but not there.
Fled, gone, what is said and seen.
Some of it was good, but other things came with it.
Raises a sword and a shield
Some of it was good, but other things came with it.
Raises a sword and a shield

There is an English version of the song. It was once featured in a Grey's Anatomy episode (I think in season 11) here it is:

Sadly my laptop crashed so I lost the NF results. I think Afterglow became 2nd, Dreaming 3rd, Hold 4th and Stardust was dead-last, totally chanceless.

WV 88: Yōko Kanno - Von (feat. Árnor Dan) (Hope)

YokoKannoOtakon2013Announcement_150513_125820.jpg
agentfresco-arnor-teaser.png

Lyrics

Translation

For the first time since John Grant in WV 68 Ive borrowed some foreign expertise for my Icelandic entry... Yoko Kanno composed and produced this song. Kanno is a 1963 born Japanese composer, arranger and musician best known for her work on the soundtracks on anime films, television series, live-action films, video games, and advertisements. This song was composd for the anime Zankyō no Terror and it is performed by the amazing Icelandic singer Árnor Dan, best known as the lead singer of Agent Fresco (remember WV 46) and for his collaborations with Ólafur Árnalds (for "Broadchurch", amongst others).

What is the anime Zankyō no Terror (English name: Terror in Resonance) about?
In an alternate iteration of the present, Tokyo has been hit by a terrorist attack that has devastated the city. The only evidence of the culprits is a cryptic video uploaded to the Internet, which sparks paranoia across Japan. Unbeknownst to the authorities is that the terrorist masterminds—who call themselves "Sphinx" —are two teenaged boys who go by the names Nine and Twelve. Though they apparently should not exist, they have nonetheless decided to "wake up the world" with their heinous plans of destruction, with their fingers on the trigger.

I can recommend this series. Its very exciting, socio-critical and very sad at some parts. And it consists of only 11 episodes, so you can watch it in two days basically.

Director Shinichirō Watanabe stated in interview with Otaku USA Magazine that the music of Sigur Rós was the inspiration for the show and its soundtrack.

When I was listening to Sigur Rós, I got the visual image of two boys standing in the ruins of a destroyed city and that led to the idea of Terror In Resonance. ... we actually went to Iceland to record our music

...Thats why they tried to capture the Icelandic atmosphere in their soundtrack as good and accurate as possible. Cold, melancholic and sweet melodies and men with high voices. Arnor Dan was perfect for this (provided that Jonsi himself didnt have time). Yoko Kanno did a great job. I think I could somehow guess that the soundtrack isnt 100% genuinely Icelandic, but its very close to it. You should check out the full soundtrack.

I also love the series for the fact that its full of Iceland references and at the end even Sigur Ros references. "Von" isnt only the name of the song but its also the "recognition symbol" of the terrorists.. when they accomplished an attack they spray the word "Von" somewhere at the crime scene. And they cause a lot of confusion for the police as they dont know what this is supposed to mean. Anyway, at the same time, Von is also inspired by Sigur Ros. Its the name of their 1997 debut album :) and it became eponymous for their imaginary language Vonlenska (also known as "Hopelandic")

I hope you enjoy this little gem! xcheer

Domo arigato and Takk for the great support of the beautiful and gentle gem Von xcheer

My semi final result is good, sadly the votings are allocated in a disadvantageous way, so I didnt advance to the final. It's literally the unluckiest way to fail being overall 2nd place in REJU ranking... I feel robbed cause I think my song would have been competitive in the final and I hoped after the good result of Ásgeir in last edition I could build up a positive streak again... well nevermind.
It's crazy I apparently wasnt in a semi final with Ben since WV 71 and it rarely happens I end up in a semi final with Daniel, either... these are very unlucky coincidences cause they use to be major supporters of my songs xthink

Next edition will be a special one ... it's my 50th edition overall. So, I guess, now I am one of the old-timers here  I cant believe how fast the time has passed by, cause I remember my debut as if it was yesterday. The excitement of the first LL... the curiosity of how people would react on my entry... an extraordinary experience! Usually I am not a constant kind of person so I thought I would leave after 4-5 editions but now look at me... I have a rich history of nearly 50 editions. So much to look back at. So many different songs of different artists. So many stories and emotions. Surprising successes, a miracle win, huge disappointments and some of I-was-so-close-moments.. (Schindlers List Theme.. :( )
I am very happy to have joined this WV and to be part of this fantastic contest. It's became a great hobby for which I invest a lot of time and that fills my life with joy mostly (also in unsuccessful times like right now).. its probably my favorite hobby!
I will certainly organize a 50 editions anniversary LL on plug but it's too early to make announcements.. I would probably do that between WV 89 and 90. Anyway, I'll let you know!!

My 50th entry of course has to be something very special and meaningful so I will send that one very special and beloved song Ive wanted to send for a long time.. if you have me as friend on last.fm you can easily figure out the song cause it's the one I scrobbled the most without having sent it so far.

The band took part in WV before and they had "good" results. ;)

And I-was-so-close-moments are the worst to be honest. First world problems to those looking in, but gosh they do sting. And I can relate in that I thought i'd leave after 4 or 5 editions too. In fact, I think I said these exact words to people, that I probably wouldn't be here for long but it's just too addictive. Players are very open to hearing all kinds of music, which is wonderful! 50 is such a grand number to reach. I think I know which band you'll pick:cool:

Yes, i'm bad at keeping away from the WorldVision section of the forum.

WV 89: Kaleo - All The Pretty Girls

JzyNS4J.jpg

Lyrics

All the pretty girls like Samuel
Ohh he really doesn't share
Although it's more than he can handle
Life is anything but fair, life is anything but fair
(I wish I had his "problems" )

Just as soon as they turn older
He'll come and sweep them off their feet
It's only making me feel smaller
l the hidden love beneath

Won't you lay me, won't you lay me down
Won't you lay me, won't you lay me down
Won't you lay me, won't you lay me down
Won't you lay me, won't you lay - me down

All alone, alone again
No one lends a helping hand
I have waited, I have waited
Takes it's toll, one's foolish pride
How long before I see the light
I have waited, I have waited
For you to lay me down

Sail on by, sail on by for now
They play naked in the water xheat
You know it's hard, heaven knows I've tried
But it just keeps getting harder

So won't you lay me, won't you lay me down
won't you lay me, won't you lay me down
won't you lay me, won't you lay me down
won't you lay me, won't you lay me down

I'll wait, I'll wait, I'll wait, I'll wait for you
I'll wait, I'll wait, I'll wait, I'll wait for you
I'll wait, I'll wait, I'll wait, I'll wait for you
I'll wait, I'll wait, I'll wait, I'll wait for you
For you to lay me
won't you lay me down
--------------
For my 50th entry I decided to send one of my fav songs of the last few years... it failed in two national finals so thats why Ive never come to send it so far. Now the time has come.
Kaleo could be considered my scorewhore band but I am very sure this song wont do as good as Vor i Vaglaskogi and Way Down We go (very bold prediction, I know). It's a calming beautiful and sweet indie folk song but I doubt it will blow away the masses. It means a lot to me though. And the reactions during the LL yesterday were decent.
Icelandic men and high vocals is a never ending love story.. and even though Kaleo singer JJ actually has a rough and strong voice of a rock musicians he can also sing in falsetto as he proves in this song... its not usual for him. But I find it very nice.
It's actually what Icelandic people would call a summer song... Kaleo tried to spread summer spirit with this song and the video displays the pure and natural beauty of Icelandic summers (and Icelandic people). I catch myself thinking how great it would be to be part of the video setting but then I remember it was probably only 10 or 15 degrees when they recorded it, although its summer

In other news, Kaleo were nominated for the Grammy Awards that took place yesterday for their song "No Good" in the category "Best rock performance". Sadly they lost to Leonard Cohen... well, that was obvious I guess! It hurts a bit cause "No Good" was clearly the best of the 5 nomineers but then again Cohen is a legend. That probably helped.
Sadly also Johann Johannsson failed to win the award with his Arrival soundtrack but nevermind. At least two of my WV stars were nominated.

Again, in other news, I plan an 50-entries-anniversary show in the time period between 8th and 15th October. I already invited 5 elite users xheat and asked them for their favorite day. As soon as we found a appointment that is good for all of us, I will announce it here in the green room and of course everybody is invited to join then!!

Re: Áfram Ísland! | 50th whiteshoes entry | WV 89: Kaleo - All the pretty girls

Informatons about my Anniversary event - 50 editions of whiteshoes magic:

I asked five people if they have time to attend the event on Friday, the 9th.

Daniel, Aigars, Kai and Anna agreed, Ben sadly doesnt have time on the day. Unfortunately he couldnt guarantee his presence on any day around the 9th so he doesnt play a role in my plans anymore.

So, if you dont mind we will make this show on Friday, 9th Februar. As starting time I suggest 20:30 CET. I suppose the show will take around 4 hours considering my most songs were nearly 5 minutes long. I didnt plan any special intro, interval acts or videos... it will be exhausting enough anyway  No "fringe events", just pure whiteshoes magic

Maybe you can send me a top 10 of your fav entries though. We will see.

I only contacted those 5 persons before, but EVERYBODY is welcome to join!!
