Verona is located in northern Italy at the foot of the Lessini Mountains on the River Adige. It is 120 km away from Venice and very close to the Lake Garda (the largest lake in Italy). It has a population of 258.031 inhabitants, which means it is the most populated city of the region of Veneto, followed by Venice. Verona is one of the main tourist destinations in northern Italy. One of the reasons of the city’s attraction for tourists is the fact that two of William Shakespeare's plays are set in Verona: Romeo and Juliet and The Two Gentlemen of Verona. In November 2000 the city was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO because of its urban structure and architecture.

It was founded by the Romans in the 1st century B.C. The river was an essential route for traffic and commerce and it was not by chance that the Romans chose this location to establish themselves in the area.
With the descent of the Barbarians in the 3rd century AD, Verona became an efficient military base for the control of the borders, especially after Gallienus had strengthened its city walls. In spite of this the city yielded to the Visigoth invasion, to Attila, to Theodoricus' Ostrogoths and finally to the Lombards, who however were defeated by Charlemagne in 774.

From the Middle Ages onwards, Verona was always an important artistic centre with a flourishing school of painters. In 1136 it became an independent commune. It prospered under the rule of the Scaliger family and particularly under Cangrande I. The ‘Piazza delle Erbe’ was created precisely as a market place, for commerce and exchange.
From 1405, and lasting for the entire 15th century, it was under the Venetian domination. From 1797, it became part of the Austrian Empire and joined the Kingdom of Italy in 1866. During the Second World War Verona was a refuge for officials of the Fascist regime and as a result was heavily bombed. Verona was extensively rebuilt in the post-war period. Despite this, Verona has preserved a remarkable number of monuments from antiquity, the medieval and Renaissance periods, and represents an outstanding example of a military stronghold.

But...where does the name 'Verona' come from?

The origins of the name Verona are unknown: it may be derived from Vera, perhaps an Etruscan person's name; or it might be of Gallic origin; it may be the name of a Roman family or come from the Latin ver, meaning "spring". But according to one legend the legendary founder of the city, the Gallic chieftain Brenno, called the new inhabited centre Vae Roma, that is "Accursed Rome", which then over the centuries became Verona.

Juliet's house

This house belonged to the Dal Capello family, commonly known as the Cappelletti. This was so similar to the name of Juliet's family (the Capulets) that the house became her family home in everyone's imagination and in the process gave a great boost to Verona's tourist industry.
The link was given extra weight by the convenient fact that there's a small balcony overlooking the courtyard, although this balcony is actually an addition of the 20th century. Just below the balcony stands a bronze statue of Juliet. Legend has it that rubbing your hand over Juliet's right breast brings love and fertility.
The inside of the house is arranged as a small museum with information about the building and Shakespeare's tragedy, Romeo and Juliet.

The Duomo (Cathedral) of Verona

Duomo di Verona is dedicated to S. Maria Assunta under the designation Santa Maria Matricolare. It is the sacred seat of the Verona Diocese. It was erected after two Palaeo-Christian churches on the same site had been destroyed by an earthquake in the early years of the 12th century. Built in Romanesque architecture, the cathedral was consecrated in 1187. The structure was later improved by numerous renovations, although the plan has remained the same. Since the 12th century, Duomo features the most exquisite Romanesque carvings, early unique Christian artifacts, and lovely wall paintings.

Piazza delle Erbe

For many centuries, Piazza delle Erbe was the centre of the social, economic and religious life of Verona. In Roman times used to be the Forum, which had the same length and also very similar functions.
In the municipal period it was the seat of political power, and with the Scaligeri it became a lively center of arts and commerce. First under Venetian and then Austrian rule, it hosted the civil and criminal court, but it always remained the favorite meeting place and market of the Veronese people.
The oldest monument in Piazza Erbe is the fountain with the statue, known as Madonna Verona. It is a Roman statue which, according to an epigraph of the fourth century, was transferred with solemn ceremony to the Forum, around 380.

Torre dei Lamberti

In Piazza delle Erbe stands the Torre dei Lamberti. Today, with its 84 metres, it is the tallest building in Verona. Construction began in 1172 in Romanesque style. The Tower, which at the time was only 37 metres high, was then integrated into the Palazzo del Consiglio, built after the establishment of the Free City. In 1403 lightning struck the top of it but they only began the long restoration and elevation in 1448, which made it have the corrent 84 metres height. Still, it looked very different from what we see nowadays. Only in 1779 it was equipped with a clock, placed in place of that of the nearby Torre Gardello who had stopped working. Since 1972 the Tower is open to visitors who can climb up to the first level to admire panoramic views of the city and its surroundings.

Arena-Verona.jpg

The Arena of Verona

The Host venue for FSC #165 November 2022, is the Arena of Verona, probably the biggest city attraction! The Arena was built by the Romans in the 1st century AD, in the Augustan period. Its name comes from its central area, which was covered with sand, precisely arena in Latin.
The Arena, as it stands today, is the result of the constant removal of materials, but also of the terrible earthquake that struck the city in the 12th century leaving indelible traces on the monument. Only four arches are left of the outer circle, which was the real, utterly sumptuous, façade.
The Arena's vocation for shows and public functions has never been exhausted over the centuries. At the time of he Communes and under the Scaligeri, trials were held, with judicial disputes being resolved by hand-to-hand fights; jousts and tournaments were held in the Middle Ages and up to the 18th century and still today the Arena is the famous setting for Verona's spectacular opera season.
