EMA 2018, Slovenia’s national selection, will feature an international performer – Mila. She is from Poland, and her real name is Emilia Debska. Mila participated in the sixth season of The Voice in Poland but was eliminated in the battle round. In just ten days, she will perform her song “Svodoba” (Freedom) in the semifinal of the Slovenian national selection, but before checking out her performance, let’s see what she had to say to us.
Can you tell us who Mila is in just two sentences?
– I believe Mila is a singer/songwriter who shares emotions through music, who values and points out the importance of delivering the emotional sphere in life, relationships between people, true feelings that color our life. Mila is a storyteller of love in every shape and shade.
When and why did you decide to apply for EMA?
– I decided to apply for EMA just moments before the deadline. We recorded the song which has a great vibe and good lyrics and strong radio potential, and at the same time it fits the Eurovision standards such as length, etc… I’m very happy about it because it’s my first song in Slovenian, and I also love its powerful message. I’ve never participated in any of Eurovision national selections, nor in any other festival. I have been, however, a huge fan of the Eurovision Song Contest since I was a kid, so the reason I’ve applied is simple as that: It’s my childhood dream.
What is a typical day like for you?
– Every day is very different because of the characteristics of my work. I am a freelance musician. My day schedule varies quite significantly from day to day depending on my current projects and kids’ activities. As I am a night person, I do most of my creative work then.
Can you tell us anything about your EMA song?
– The song is called “Svoboda,” which means freedom. The lyrics are very powerful, and there is a catchy double meaning around it. Do not worry, the message is clear at the end, and I believe that listeners will appreciate its simplicity and sincerity.
What is your first Eurovision memory?
– I was actually blown away by Katrina and the Waves’ “Love Shine a Light.” The stage, the energetic performance, the tension, suspense, happiness & unity. Altogether, they really made me want to be a part of this Eurovision circus one day…
Your favorite Eurovision song?
– I’m a big fan of Måns Zelmerlöw, so “Heroes” would be one of my favorites. Other favorites of mine include Sanna Nielsen’s song “Undo,” Carl Espen from Norway with the song “Silent Storm,” “A Monster Like Me” from Mørland & Debrah Scarlett, and “Calm After the Storm” by The Common Linnets from the Netherlands. And the last years winner “Amar pelos dois” from Salvador Sobral I consider to be the best Eurovision song ever.
Would you be so kind to tell us something interesting about yourself, something that isn’t commonly known?
– Well, I suppose there’s a lot of interesting things about me. First of all, I’m a mommy of two beautiful children, Sara and Julian; they are my world, my biggest love of all. Musically speaking I can perceive music with all my senses, for example I can see sounds through colors and shapes. It is rather a rare gift, and I do enjoy using it. 🙂
Do you have any message for Eurovision fans all around the world?
– If I had a chance to deliver a message, it would be: Give love! Even if you don’t get it back immediately, you’ll get it later when the time is right. Don’t ever give up on love. Love unconditionally, love truly! Love yourself, because to share love, you have to feel it in the first place. Be yourself and give love!
