The MTV VMAs wrapped up last night and Måneskin walked away with the Best Alternative Video award for “I WANNA BE A SLAVE”, beating out Avril Lavigne, Imagine Dragons, Twenty One Pilots, Machine Gun Kelly, and Panic! at the Disco. The award is their 14th win at music award event out of 29 total nominations, including winning both the Sanremo Music Festival and Eurovision 2021. They are also the first Italian group to ever win a VMA award outside of Europe.

The group received two additional nominations at the 2022 VMAs in the categories of Best New Artist and Group of the Year, losing in both categories. The band were the only rock group to be nominated for Best New Artist and we part of the final three candidates alongside former Disney Channel now pop star Dove Cameron and South Korean boyband Seventeen. Dove Cameron would eventually go on to win the award.

Their nomination for Group of the Year put them up against rock groups Foo Fighters and the Red Hot Chili Peppers, Silk Sonic, Imagine Dragons, Blackpink, and BTS. KPop megaband BTS won the award for the fourth consecutive year. It was also the fourth year in a row that Blackpink was nominated in the category, and the second year in a row for both Silk Sonic and Foo Fighters.

Måneskin’s performance censored by MTV

The band was given the opportunity to perform their latest single “Supermodel” on the VMAs stage, but their performance was censored by MTV following a wardrobe malfunction that left Victoria’s chest completely exposed. The camera at many points shows a full-arena shot of the performance to avoid Victoria and has garnered a large amount of criticism online. Despite this, the band carried on and lit up the stage for one of the most talked about and watched music shows in the world.

Their appearance at the 2022 VMAs caps off their recent dominance of the American market following their Eurovision 2021 win – with appearances on Saturday Night Live, the Ellen DeGeneres ShowThe Tonight Show starring Jimmy Fallon, and openning for the Rolling Stones in Las Vegas. Next, the band will embark on a 25 concert North American tour from October 31st to December 16th with stops in Dallas, New York, Boston, Montreal, Los Angeles, and more.
