Malta has selected their representative for the 2022 Junior Eurovision Song Contest in Yerevan. Gaia Gambuzza won the contest with the song “Diamonds in the Skies”, placing first out of 16 participants. Andrea Camilleri came in second with her song “Spark”, and Emma Kate Formosa placed third with her song “Bounce”. The contest was decided by a combination jury vote (75%) and televote (25%), and only the top 3 placing acts were made public.

The broadcast, which took place on October 2nd, was produced in the PBS studio at Rediffusion House in Gwardamanga and hosted by Maltese television personalities and social media influencers Ryan and Josmar Borg. While the broadcast did not feature a studio audience, paritipcants performed live for the jury panel. Interval acts included previous representatives Eliana Gomez Blanco (2019), Gianluca Cilia (2017) an Ike & Kaya (2021).

The 2022 Junior Eurovision Song Contest will take place on December 11th in Yerevan, Armenia, and marks the 20th edition of the contest. 16 countries have announced their participation in the 2022 contest, including the surprise return of the UK for the first time since 2005.

Malta’s past in Junior Eurovision

As a founding member of the Junior Eurovision Contest in 2003, Malta has competed 17 times and won twice. Their first win in 2013, “The Start” by Gaia Cauchi, marked their return to the contest after a two year hiatus in 2011-2012. In 2015 Malta won the contest a second time with “Not My Soul” by Destiny Chukunyere, who later went on to represent Malta in the 2021 Eurovision Song Contest. Destiny had originally been selected to represent Malta in the 2020 edition of the contest, which was cancelled due to the Covid-19 Pandemic. The pop-hip hop duo Ike & Kaya placed 12th of 19 in the 2021 contest with their song “My Home”.
