It’s the most wonderful time of the year! The 72nd edition of the Festival di Sanremo kicked off tonight at the Ariston Theatre, and the race to select Italy’s favourite song of 2022 and Eurovision representative has well and truly begun.
Tonight, the first 12 of the 25 artists taking part in Sanremo performed their song for the first time. Tonight’s ranking was determined by the press, composed of a print and TV jury, web jury and radio jury, who each decided on a third of the overall result.
Tonight’s scoreboard looks like this:

This means that Mahmood and Blanco are currently in the lead.
Sanremo 2022 is hosted by much-beloved Italian presenter Amadeus, who is hosting and directing his third consecutive Festival. Tonight, he was joined by Italian actress and triple Golden Globe winner Ornella Muti. Other guests included Amadeus’ BFF Fiorello, last year’s participants Colapesce_Dimartino and Orietta Berti, and electronic music group Meduza, who performed alongside international star Hozier. Eurovision and Sanremo winners Måneskin also made an appearance. They performed their winning song Zitti e Buoni and gave an emotional and intimate performance of their song Coraline.
As usual, Sanremo was full of confusing, hilarious and iconic moments. Tonight, this included Fiorello making a grand entrance by scanning every guest’s temperature, Amadeus picking up Måneskin from their hotel in a golf cart, Colapesce_Dimartino performing on a cruise ship and a midnight pizza delivery.

Tomorrow, during the second night of Sanremo, the 13 remaining artists will perform their entries for the first time. We will see AKA 7even, Ditonellapiaga con Rettore, Elisa, Emma, Fabrizio Moro, Giovanni Truppi, Highsnob e Hu, Irama, Iva Zanicchi, Le Vibrazioni, Matteo Romano, Sangiovanni and Tananai take to the famous Ariston stage. An announcement of the Eurovision hosts could also take place, as rumoured hosts Laura Pausini and Mika are both expected to make an appearance. The winner of Sanremo 2022 will represent Italy as the host entry at the Eurovision Song Festival 2022 in Turin. Last year, Måneskin won Sanremo, subsequently winning Eurovision and taking over Europe and the world.
