The first semi-final for Söngvakeppnin is in the books! Five acts competed in the first semi-final of Iceland’s national selection. In the semi-finals for Söngvakeppnin, all songs are sung in Icelandic. Any songs that qualify for the final will then be sung in the intended language for Eurovision. The running order was as follows:

01. Benedikt – “Þora”
02. Diljá – “Lifandi inni í mér”
03. Celebs – “Dómsdags dans”
04. Bragi – “Stundum snýst heimurinn gegn þér”
05. Móa – “Glötuð ást”
(Click on the songs listed to watch the live performances on YouTube.)

After a final ad break, the qualifiers were announced! Qualifiers are determined entirely by televote. The qualifiers were announced in random order, and we were told that there was a TWO VOTE difference between second and third place! In order of being announced, the qualifiers were Diljá and Bragi. That means we must unfortunately say goodbye to Benedikt, Celebs, and Móa. At least for now? In years past, a wildcard has been awarded to the act with the most votes that didn’t qualify, so we could see the third place finisher from this semi move forward.

Next week on Saturday, 25 February, we’ll continue with semi-final two of Söngvakeppnin, where two more acts will move onto the final on Saturday, 4 March.

Do #YOU agree with the qualifiers? Who do you think will win it all for Iceland? Let us know on social media @ESCUnited, on our discord, or on our forum page!
