It looks like yet another European broadcaster is in financial trouble. We previously reported about Israel’s IBA planning to shut down and re-open in March 2015. Similar developments might now occur in TVR, the national broadcaster of Romania.

Stelian Tanase, the Director General of TVR, told the Romanian news agency Mediafax that the broadcaster might have to close down in the near future if financial support by the state isn’t increased. A potential shut-down could take place in the upcoming spring – TVR would stop broadcasting for a month and then re-open after a drastic overhaul.

It goes without saying that these financial problems TVR is facing might threaten Romania’s participation in the Eurovision Song Contest 2015. If the shut-down does take place in the upcoming spring, sitting out for a year would be a logical consequence. However, an official statement regarding Eurovision hasn’t been made by TVR.

Romania made its Eurovision debut in 1993. Since then, the Eastern European country managed to achieve a third place on two occasions – in 2005 with Luminiţa Anghel & Sistem’s Let Me Try as well as Paula Seling & Ovi with their song Playing With Fire in 2010.

ESC United will keep you updated on further developments regarding Romania’s participation! In the meantime, you can discuss the potential withdrawal on our forum.
