Luxembourg will not be returning to the contest in 2016 – marking 22 years of non-participation

In what could be considered dissapointing but not unexpected news, Luxembourg’s national broadcaster RTL has given indication that the small Benelux state will not be taking part in the Eurovision Song Contest next year in Sweden.

Luxembourg has not taken part since 1993 but in recent years many fans have felt a sea of change as the cultural minister of the country seemingly gave approval to Luxembourg returning for 2015. It is currently unknown whether the country will ever return to the contest or what needs to change for them to return.

Luxembourg was a founding nation of the contest, taking part 37 times between 1956 and 1993. Their final entry finished 20th. Modern Times’ “Donne-moi une chance”, a Franco-Luxembourgish song, gained 11 points. The country has five wins, equal with France and the United Kingdom, but doesn’t seem likely to add a 6th anytime soon.
